To say that Eileen Healy was totally surprised June 5, when she learned the 2014 Newark High School Arcadian, of which she is the advisor, was dedicated to her, is an understatement. Standing at the front of the NHS auditorium, awaiting what she expected would be Arcadian editors Morgan Johnson and Brenda Prinzi’s announcement that the yearbook was being dedicated to Deborah Barry, Healy looked verrrrrrry puzzled as she began to hear a dierent narrative unfolding. And she looked completely shocked when she realized it was about her. “Surprised is not a big enough word to describe this honor,” Healy, who is Marketing and Publications teacher at NHS recalled later. “My rst thought was ‘what have they done?’ and then more perplexing was ‘how did they do it?’ ” After all, she thought the yearbook was all done when she and NHS art teacher Renee Bailey took NHS Business and Art students to New York City in April. To say that Eileen Healy was totally surprised June 5, when she learned the 2014 Newark High School Arcadian, of which she is the advisor, was dedicated to her, is an understatement. Standing at the front of the NHS auditorium, awaiting what she expected would be Arcadian editors Morgan Johnson and Brenda Prinzi’s announcement that the yearbook was being dedicated to Deborah Barry, Healy looked verrrrrrry puzzled as she began to hear a different narrative unfolding.

And she looked completely shocked when she realized it was about her. “Surprised is not a big enough word to describe this honor,” Healy, who is Marketing and Publications teacher at NHS recalled later. “My "rst thought was ‘what have they done?’ and then more perplexing was ‘how did they do it?’ ” After all, she thought the yearbook was all done when she and NHS art teacher Renee Bailey took NHS Business and Art students to New York City in April. But Johnson and Prinzi and the rest of Healy’s Marketing and Publications class, that produces the yearbook each year and who had been busy for some time working without her knowledge to dedicate the yearbook to her, worked out a clever scheme that also involved assistance from some other faculty and school staff to carry it out.

#e plot included getting Barry, who is the teacher assistant in the NHS Career Center, director of community education, the district’s volunteer coordinator and Co-Senior advisor _ to help them. Unbeknownst to Healy, Barry good-naturedly agreed to participate in the covert operation that began with the yearbook editors and the class telling Healy they wanted the 2014 Arcadian to be dedicated to Barry. With the green light from Jostens _ the State College, Pa. yearbook company and its representative, Paul Eadi, who works with NHS each year _ that agreed to help the Marketing and Publications class pull off the hoax _ Barry secretly provided photos of herself and background information that would be put on a “dummy” yearbook dedication page. Once assembled, that page, which Healy had no reason to believe was not legit, was proofed by her before sending it along electronically to Jostens. #e real dedication page, honoring Healy, meanwhile was secretly developed and sent to Jostens when she and the Business and Art students were on their way to NYC. Johnson and Prinzi, from the bus, coordinated the effort via text messages, to Jostens and Casey Arnold, a Marketing and Publications class member who was back at NHS and facilitated the switch. Amazingly, she was none the wiser until the actual yearbook dedication was revealed at the end of the annual awards assembly June 5.

In announcing the long-awaited secret, the editors explained much thought each year goes into the decision over who the yearbook will be dedicated to. Parroting a directive Healy frequently uses to spur her class to think outside the box, the editors said they chose to be “different and daring to change” and did something that had not been done before at NHS. In addition to Barry, they were also aided in their caper, in part, by Bailey, Kathleen Tanea, who is an NHS business teacher and district coordinator of technology staff development; and Sherry Williams, an NHS Special Education teacher who is also work study coordinator. Amid tears, Healy who graciously accepted the award, calling it an honor, expressed amazement at the feat her students had accomplished without her "nding out about it. “#is was no small feat,’’ she later said. ”#ey had to involve several others to get this done and get it by me. I can’t believe no one spilled the beans, but I’ve always instructed my students that when it comes to the yearbook dedication, nothing we have talked about leaves the classroom. “I am proud of them all for using their problem solving, researching, investigative and collaborative skills to get this done,’’ she continued. “#at's what we want our students to be able to do when they leave NHS and they certainly demonstrated their abilities to do so.” She also noted this was the second time in her 37-year career at NHS that the Arcadian was dedicated to her, but said, “this one is every bit as sweet.” A Bolivar, NY high school graduate, Healy, who received her bachelor’s degree from SUNY Albany and did her graduate studies at SUNY Brockport, Cornell University and New York University, began working as a business teacher at

NHS in 1977. Her experience over the years has moved from teaching Typing (on a typewriter), Business Management and Marketing to Accounting, Marketing and Publications, Young Entrepreneurs Academy and Microsoft Essentials. Her students have included her own children, William, Conor and Mary Kate. Healy has also coached various sports, cheerleading, tennis and skiing to name a few. In 2004, the Varsity Boys Ski team she coached won a state title. She has long been involved in countless student activities and advisorships. #is year in addition to being the Arcadian advisor and Co-Senior advisor she is the Career and Technical Education Department’s instructional supervisor, and serves on many other school committees. “. . . it is not just in the classroom, on the "eld, or in numerous activities in which Ms. Healy’s presence is felt, it is in our everyday lives as well,’’ the Arcadian editors noted in their dedication.
