“The purpose of the Divine Office (Liturgy of the Hours) is to sanctify the day and all human activity.”

“The Divine Office (Liturgy of the Hours) is the prayer not only of the clergy, but of the whole People of God.”

– Apostolic Constitution, Canticum Laudis.

The Liturgy of the Hours is one of the richest prayer resources of the Church, with prayers, psalms, and readings for each of the Hours, changing each day and through each of the seasons. It is prayed by clergy and religious and is very much encouraged to be prayed faithfully by the laity as well. It is the universal, common prayer of the church. It is amazing to think that throughout the world, throughout each day and its hours, these common prayers and petitions are being prayed, whether in rectories, monasteries, seminaries or in people’s homes.

Both public and common prayer by the people of God is considered to be among one of the primary duties of the Church. From the very beginning of our Church, those who were baptized "devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the community, to the breaking of the bread, and to prayer" (Acts 2:42). The Acts of the Apostles gives frequent testimony to the fact that the Christian community prayed together communally. The witness of the early Church teaches us that individual Christians devoted themselves to prayer at fixed times throughout the day. For example, the last hour of the day when evening draws near, or the first hour when night draws to a close with the rising of the sun for a start to a new day. In the course of time other hours came to be sanctified by prayer. Such prayer in common gradually took the form of a set cycle of hours. This liturgy of the hours or divine office, enriched by readings, is principally a prayer of praise and petition. It is the prayer of the Church with Christ and to Christ. It is Prayer, which is about the sanctification of time and of each day, and it is linked with the Feasts and Seasons of the Liturgical Year.

The Lord calls us to pray without ceasing, and this is what the Hours enable us to do.

I invite you to come and pray ‘Morning Prayers’ with me during the Triduum.

Peace & Blessings, Deacon Ryan

INTRODUCTION OF GRETCHEN WAYNE AT THE CARDINAL’S AWARDS MARCH 21, 2015

ARCHBISHOP GOMEZ, IT IS MY HONOR AND PRIVILEGE TO INTRODUCE GRETCHEN WAYNE FOR THE CARDINAL’S AWARD TONIGHT. I HAVE KNOWN GRETCHEN FOR ALMOST FORTY YEARS. SHE IS A LIFE-LONG MEMBER OF ST. CHARLES BORROMEO PARISH, ATTENDED SCHOOL AT ST. CHARLES, GRADUATED FROM IMMACULATE HEART, AND WAS MARRIED TO HER HUSBAND, MICHAEL, IN AUGUST 1958 BY MSGR. MEADE.

GRETCHEN AND MICHAEL WELCOMED FIVE CHILDREN INTO THEIR FAMILY, AND, FROM THE BEGINNING, TAUGHT THEM THE RESPONSIBILITY OF GIVING BACK. FOR GRETCHEN, THAT MEANT BY EXAMPLE. HER RESUME INCLUDES MANY CHARITABLE OUTREACHES AND ORGANIZATIONS SHE HAS SUPPORTED, AND HER LEADERSHIP OFTEN MEANT SUCCESS FOR VARIOUS FUNDRAISERS OVER THE YEARS! GRETCHEN KNOWS HOW TO BUILD SUPPORT! WE WERE THRILLED TO GET THE NEWS THAT SHE WAS SELECTED TO RECEIVE THIS AWARD TONIGHT, BUT WERE DOUBLY GRATEFUL WHEN WE FOUND OUT THAT THE BENEFICIARIES OF THE EVENING ARE TO BE A NUMBER OF WELL KNOWN OUTREACHES OF CATHOLIC CHARITIES IN OUR VARIOUS REGIONS. THIS CERTAINLY FITS INTO THE RESUME AND BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF THE GRETCHEN WE KNOW. WHERE THERE HAS BEEN GREAT NEED, GRETCHEN HAS BEEN THERE TO HELP. IN ADDITION TO HER MANY YEARS’ INVOLVEMENT IN THE JOHN WAYNE CANCER CENTER, SHE HAS SUPPORTED THE APOSTOLIC WORK OF THE SOCIAL SERVICE SISTERS, THE SOCIAL SERVICE AUXILIARY, AND THE VARIOUS GOOD SHEPHERD OUTREACHES. THERE IS ALWAYS MORE THAT CAN BE SAID, BUT TONIGHT HER FAMILY, FRIENDS, AND FELLOW PARISHIONERS SALUTE THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN HONORED, AND THANK YOU, ARCHBISHOP, AND THE COMMITTEE, FOR ACKNOWLEDGING OUR FRIEND, GRETCHEN WAYNE, TONIGHT.

March 16, 2015

Dear Members of the St. Charles Borromeo Parish and School Community;

I was notified informally last week by Dr. Jayne Quinn, our Principal for the last fifteen years, that she will not be renewing her Contract with the Parish as Principal of St. Charles Borromeo Elementary School for 2015-16. This informal notification has now been supplemented formally.

I want to thank Dr. Quinn for her leadership in the School Community over the last fifteen years. Her experience as Principal of St. Philip the Apostle School for five years, and many years in the Catholic School system, prepared her for her years as principal here at St. Charles Borromeo.

I have sent written thanks to Dr. Quinn and expressed our thanks for her professionalism, compassion, and fairness. Dr. Quinn always made her decisions after careful thought and consideration, and she was always conscience of our obligation to the Church community, parents, faculty, and especially as advocate of the students. I have appreciated her collaboration and keeping me ‘in the loop’ when critical issues demanded it.

I have notified the Department of Catholic Schools and have asked Sr. Yvette Perrault RSM, who has a great deal of experience in school work, to sit as the Chair of a group of adults from the Parish and School who will review the applicant pool, select an appropriate number for a group interview, and pass on the names of two or three finalists for a final interview with the Pastor.

It is my hope that we can introduce the name of the person selected as Principal of St. Charles Borromeo School for 2015-16 the first week of May, 2015.

Thank you for your prayers and for supporting ‘Quality Education in the Catholic Tradition.’ We have a wonderful school thanks to the efforts of so many! With special thanks and prayers for Dr. Jayne Quinn!

Sincerely In Christ, Rev. Msgr. Robert J. Gallagher VF, Pastor

RCIA CANDIDATES & CATECHUMENS

At the Easter Vigil Liturgy, our parish family will receive new members into our community through the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and First Communion. We are featuring our Elect each week of

Lent. When you see them at Mass, extend a warm welcome, and please hold them in prayer as they take the next steps on their journey of faith through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA).

I am extremely thankful that I was raised in a Catholic, multi-cultural family. My mother is of Mexican decent while my father is American. I had the opportunity to live a life enriched with culture from both my father and my mother. I grew up in the Catholic Church attending mass every Sunday and on special holidays. When I was ten years old I went to Sunday school where I learned prayers in coloring books about Jesus with my two brothers. My blessed mother was so excited for us to receive our sacraments; she handmade my beautiful white dress for that special day. However, the day of my First Communion, my two brothers and I caught the chicken pox and were unable to receive our sacraments. Now, a few decades later, I have chosen to again return to Sunday school (RCIA) to receive my sacraments. As an adult I am much more grateful for this opportunity, as I now have a much deeper understanding to

what God, Jesus, and the Catholic Church mean to me. And I look forward to what lies ahead for me in my life, my relationships, and my connection to God. Thank you for your blessings.
