Acquiring a MapTo start off, you must get a map of the area you’re
trying to conduct the analysis in. It can be
either from Google Maps, NYC Oasis, NYCityMap, or
etc.
Use Print Screen on the keyboard or a program, such as SnagIt to save the map. NYCityMap and Oasis are
the most clear of the bunch.

Placing The Map Once you’ve gotten your map, you can now place it into the project. You should do this on the Site Plan View.
Go to the Insert tab and click on the image button. Once, the image is in, your screen should look similar to this.

Resizing The Image
There seems to be something wrong now. The image seems to big/small for the model
that you’ve created. You’ll have to resize it to fit properly or else the analysis won’t work.
To properly resize the image, use the move tool to place it on a corner and resize it like that. When you click the
image, a X should appear, which will let you size it properly.

Casting The Shadow & TimeNow that you’ve set up the location
and the date, you’ll now be able to cast the model’s shadow. At first nothing
will appear. You’ll have to click a button next to the Sun Button on the bottom
for it to show.
You can also alter the shadow by changing it to the desired time. I’ve changed it from 12:00 PM to 1:00PM in the Sun Settings.

Region FillLet’s put the time back to 12:00 PM for the analysis to be effective. The next step is
to Region Fill the casted shadow. You can find the button in the Annotation Tab.
Once clicked, the ribbon should turn into this. Use the Line tool to start tracing the shadow. Zoom in to accurately trace it.
Your trace should look similar to this, also in the properties bar, select the Solid Black Region Fill. It might be on something else by default. Then
click the Green Check Mark to finish.

Hiding The ShadowThe shadow should now look like this.
Hiding the Shadow is crucial to the process of
tracing a new one, so it won’t be in the way. Right click the Shadow that you’ve traced
and go to Hide in View, then
Elements. The shortcut to this is (EH) by default.
Once hidden, it’s now time to start a new shadow. Go back to the Sun Settings and change the Time. I’ve changed it to 1:00
PM. Trace the Shadow with the Region Fill command again, then hide to start another.

Unhiding The Shadows
Now that you’ve hidden them all, you’ll need to unhide them now. Click the
Reveal Hidden button near the bottom and your screen should look like this.
Right click on one of the
shadows and go to the Select All Instances, then Visible in View. This will select every Shadow
that you’ve created. Then
right click again, Unhide in
View, then Elements. Now your Shadows should all be visible in the regular view.

Transparency of The Shadows
The final step in all this is to change the Shadow’s Transparency. Select all the Shadows again, Then
right click, Override Graphics in View, then By Element… This window should pop up. Go to the Surface Transparency section and slide it to the desired value. The higher the value, the more
transparent the shadow will become.
The result
s should look
similar to
this.
