Instead of cancelling this year’s “The Great Bucket List Cycle” the (up to) 100km bicycle ride is being done all across St. Joseph Island over an entire week. The fundraiser for ARCH Hospice has gone virtual. While much of the communication was virtual, the biking itself is very real. Individu- als who participated or still wish to, did so at their own time and pace from September 19th up until this Saturday, September 26th. Those that signed up before September 1st did receive loot bags and t-shirts, like in previous years. Instead of hav- ing volunteers hand out items prior to the start, they were delivered to the homes of those who raised over $200. While biking would generally be thought of as an activity where you can maintain distance, having 150+ people start at the same time and place would no doubt lead to a lot of close situations. Staggering both the day and times allowed riders to complete the challenge safely and conveniently by not having to commit to a single day to com- plete the challenge. For the past few years, a large amount of bicyclists from all over Algoma and be- yond started out together and took either a 20, 40, 70 or 100km cycle around the is- land while previously collecting donations and sponsorships to benefit arch. Individu-als who participated or still wish to, did so at their own time and pace from September 19th up until this Saturday, September 26th. Those that signed up before September 1st did receive loot bags and t-shirts, like in previous years. Instead of hav-ing volunteers hand out items prior to the start, they were delivered to the homes of those who raised over $200. While biking would generally be thought of as an activity where you can maintain distance, having 150+ people start at the same time

and place would no doubt lead to a lot of close situations. Staggering both the day and times allowed riders to complete the challenge safely and conveniently by not having to commit to a single day to com-plete the challenge.

For the past few years, a large amount of bicyclists from all over Algoma and be-yond started out together and took either a 20, 40, 70 or 100km cycle around the is-land while previously collecting donations and sponsorships to benefit arch. of the event organizers, she provided us with some photos while she did the full 100km (unsup-ported), she mentions a few other people. Brian Read, a local islander who completed the 100km cy-cle in the rain. Michael, one of the youngest cyclists who at age 5, cycled 40km over a week. She also mentions someone aged 74 also cycling. The event is open to all ages and cycling ability, so if a shorter trek was more your style you were just as able to take part as those who trained for months to complete the 100km Gran Fondo. If you are wondering about how long it takes to bike 100km, according to Julie who provided screenshot, 5 hours and 13 minutes to go just over 101km.

With the event going virtual, that did mean riders were on their own to track their times and pace, as well as carrying supplies since there were no repair and snack stations open. In the past many volun-teers spread out across St. Joseph Island operated snack and first aid stations along the routes. Also missing this year were the signage marking the dif-ferent routes. Instead, Strava was used by most of the riders. Strava is an app that shows your route using GPS technology. So the previous routes were

available there, or you could create your own.

This year, despite the challenges and lack of meeting they still have had over 80 participants, raising over $23k! With donations still coming in, that number will continue to rise. This

Unfortunately, the Matthews Memorial Hospital Association ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT had to be cancelled due to concerns regarding COVID.

The golf tournament has been one of our biggest fundraisers each summer and we count on the income from that event to support doctor recruitment and retention, as well as upkeep of the BridgeLink Clinic.

If you would like to make a donation to assist with our ongoing expenses, please send a cheque payable to Matthews Memorial Hospital Association, and mail it to the above address or e-transfer to [email protected].

We look forward to next year with positive attitudes and hopes for a great Golf Tournament. Thanks for your continued support.

is of course down from the over $36 000 that was raised last year, but considering there was a smaller promotional campaign and less people participating that was still a great number. While Arch is partially government funded as of 2019 they still needed to raise $750,000 for operational costs.

The event continues on until this Saturday, so you still have a chance to knock this off your bucket list this year. You can learn more at www.archhhospice.ca/cycle
