COVER ART: “Christ Calling the Apostles James and John” by Edward Armitage

All Masses are celebrated inside the church buildings with the exception of a special 10 AM parking lot Mass which is celebrated in the front windows at Saint Malachy Church. The faithful will be able to listen from their car by tuning their radio to 87.9 FM.

If you are unable to be seated or feel uncomfortable being inside during Mass, please participate from your car and tune your radio to 87.9 FM (applicable to all Masses at all churches except for the live stream Mass from Holy Trinity at 10 AM on Sunday).

Everyone is asked to please register for an indoor weekend Mass by using the link provided in the bulletin, by following the links on archangelgabrielparish.org, or by calling the parish office at 412-787-2140. The 10 AM Mass at Holy Trinity will continue to be live streamed and can be accessed by visiting archangelgabrielparish.org.

You can find what we are doing as a parish in response to COVID-19 at www.archangelgabrielparish.org/covid19 in order to make the best decisions about participation for you and your household. Bishop Zubik has granted everyone a dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass. No one is currently obliged to attend Mass. If you feel ill, are older than 64, or have health issues, please stay home.

You can listen to any Mass (with the exception of the 10 AM live streamed Sunday Mass at Holy Trinity Church) from

the church parking lot by tuning in to 87.9 FM on the radio.

CLIMATE CHANGE AND ABORTION LAWFr. David Poecking (Pastor)

In climate change literature, the issue of abortion occasionally appears. It’s usually in an anti-humanist context: “The fewer people who exist, the less of a burden they are on the climate. So let’s get rid of more people!” Pope Francis has observed how this attitude toward people just sustains the “throw-away culture” by which we have so carelessly damaged our planet.

But there’s another link between the pro-climate and pro-life movements: Too many partisans speak and act as if they don’t really want their causes to win.

They want to win, yes, in a sense. They want to win elections for their favored politicians, donations and grant money for their organizations, favorable press for their leading activists. But that kind of winning often means sacrificing the cause: Shaming the uncommitted, rejecting compromises, scaring the loyal until they fear the opposition. Thus, for example, activists who believe climate change could destroy all human life nevertheless reject geo-engineering solutions or zero-carbon nuclear power because “they’re too risky.” Riskier than the loss of all human life? Really?

The pro-life movement can stumble similarly. To be pro-life is to extend the protection of the law to unborn children, and making law means making compromises: E.g., limited abortion regulation, government support for families or mothers with young children, support for pro-choice politicians if they’re less pro-choice than the opposition. And since these compromises might sometimes be ineffective, it means people who disagree with them might still be decent allies. The pro-life movement requires a more generous and flexible engagement with the public if we want to make the law better and make it stay better.

But too many of us imagine that we’re victorious if we just win a local election or a temporary office, or win more donations, or win the most praise from the activists. But politics doesn’t work that way. We’re not heading toward stable changes in law until we’re getting praise from activists and at least some of the opposition, support from people who agree with us and some who don’t.

Too bad this year’s March for Life had to be cancelled for the pandemic. For nearly fifty years, it’s been a good example of large and peaceful protest, unlike much of U.S. politics in recent months. But march or no march, let’s continue to testify to the humanity of all, including the unborn, and to our duty to extend the protection of the law to the most vulnerable, again including the unborn.

OTHER NEWS

The Knights of Columbus—men who’ve often done heroic pro-life work—also work to benefit Church and society in other ways. Recently, Mike McGinley and a few local Knights gathered to help assemble pre-fabricated furnishings for the expanded daycare/nursery that I hope soon to open in Kennedy next to St. Malachy Church. Thank you, brothers!

The word of the LORD came to Jonah, saying: “Set out for the great city of Nineveh, and announce to it the message that I will tell you.” So Jonah made ready and went to Nineveh, according to the LORD’S bidding. Now Nineveh was an enormously large city; it took three days to go through it. Jonah began his journey through the city, and had gone but a single day’s walk announcing, “Forty days more and Nineveh shall be destroyed, “when the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast and all of them, great and small, put on sackcloth. When God saw by their actions how they turned from their evil way, he repented of the evil that he had threatened to do to them; he did not carry it out.

I tell you, brothers and sisters, the time is running out. From now on, let those having wives act as not having them, those weeping as not weeping, those rejoicing as not rejoicing, those buying as not owning, those using the world as not using it fully. OFFERTORY HYMN — THE CHURCH’S ONE FOUNDATIONOFFERTORY HYMN — THE CHURCH’S ONE FOUNDATION

After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” As he passed by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea; they were fishermen. Jesus said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Then they abandoned their nets and followed him. He walked along a little farther and saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They too were in a boat mending their nets. Then he called them. So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him.

GOSPEL — MARK 1:14-20GOSPEL — MARK 1:14-20

O blessed Archangel Gabriel, you announced our salvation to the Virgin Mary. Pray for us that we may be courageous and compassionate, strong and faithful followers of her Son, Jesus. By your intercession, obtain for us the unification of our parish, and the fruitfulness of our mission to make disciples. Blessed be God in his angels and in his saints, through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

The last time I shared information about our outreach to the homebound members of our parish community, I mentioned that we had begun to systematically visit, offering the sacraments of the penance, anointing of the sick, and Holy Communion. Some were ready to have visits, while others wanted to remain safe and so passed up the visits for now. Still others have maintained contact with one of our Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and are staying connected through them. Deacon Tim has begun to do visits as well and joins me in this attempt to communicate how important all the sick and elderly are for us.

Regular hospital visits are still off the table, but I continue to check on when a priest is going to be permitted to return to Heritage Valley Kennedy. The same with the long-term care facilities. Now that a vaccine is beginning to be distributed, let us pray that it will be sooner than later.

Some of you might have caught the news that there are guidelines regarding Ash Wednesday that the Vatican has promulgated given our precautions for everyone’s safety. The priest will bless the ashes and just once say the traditional phrase, “Repent, and believe in the Gospel,” or “Remember that you are dust, and unto dust you shall return,” instead of saying it for each person who comes forward to have ashes imposed. It lessens the time between the minister and penitent and reduces chances for transmission of the virus. Another change for some places is that, instead of marking your forehead with the ashes, they will be sprinkled on your head so there is no physical contact between the minister’s thumb and the penitent’s head. This is how we received the ashes when I was a seminarian, and how they do it in Rome and other places in Europe. So, even though this might be different for many of you, it is just another way the ritual has been performed.

INTRODUCTIONRyan Dunning (Communications Coordinator)

Hello, my name is Ryan Dunning, and I’m very excited to join Archangel Gabriel Parish as the Communications Coordinator. I live in Squirrel Hill with my wife Stephanie, but I am originally from Rochester, NY - don’t worry, I am a lifelong Steelers fan. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Communications Studies from Duquesne University, worked in communications roles for the past six years, and volunteered within Diocesan youth ministry for over seven years. I look forward to meeting all of you and sharing our love for Christ!

Please make extra efforts this month to pray for our country and for the unborn. The annual March for Life will take place in Washington D.C. on Friday, January 29th. However, due to Covid restrictions, the rallies are only virtual this year. You can find out how to participate virtually at www.marchforlife.org/2021-virtual-events/

On Friday, January 29th, we ask that you offer your prayers/sacrifices for the end of abortion by participating in some of the following:

• Eucharistic Adoration in the St. Malachy parking lot from 5 AM – Noon or 5 PM - Midnight

• Participation in the Bridgeville March for Life starting in the Holy Child parking lot (212 Station St, Bridgeville) at 12:30 PM following Noon Mass that day at Holy Child. The March will begin with a prayer at our Council Memorial for the Unborn Child at the front of Holy Child and proceed with a 30-45 minutes prayerful, peaceful vigil through Bridgeville marching for Right to Life for all. The route will conclude at Holy Child parking lot. Please contact Jim at [email protected] if you have any questions.

• Participation in the our parish Pilgrimage for Life beginning at 6 PM at Holy Trinity. See below for more details!

Eucharistic Adoration times at the St. Malachy parking lot (343 Forest Grove Road) are from Monday – Friday, 5AM – Noon and 5PM – Midnight AND Saturday from 9AM – 1PM. You can show up at any time or if you would like to sign up for a regular time slot, go to archangelgabrielparish.org/adoration. Eucharistic Adoration is a way to grow closer to God.

Who hasn’t heard the tune to Joyful, Joyful, We Adore You? The tune itself is one of the most well-known—perhaps the most—in the classical-music repertory. Yet we might not be as familiar with the text by comparison. The American educator, author, and clergyman Henry Van Dyke (1852–1933) wrote this brilliant, multi-layered hymn of praise. As hymnologist Albert Bailey writes, Van Dyke’s text intricately weaves fact and metaphor as “creation itself cannot conceal its joy, and that joy is appreciated by God the center of it all; likewise all nature fills us with joy, caused fundamentally by our recognition of God as the giver.” We experience joy on many levels: we witness the joy expressed by Creation, we bask in the joy of God as He delights in us, and we experience our own joy as we reflect on all God has done for us and through us. Some argue that the text is too universalist, but it is simply a beautiful hymn of praise from all of Creation.

The tune traces to the monumental “Ninth” and final symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827). He composed this symphony within his so-called “Late Period” and was completely deaf over the six years it to complete! The Ninth Symphony was unprecedented in its size, length, scope, technique, and ground-breaking features. Until then, symphonies were the premiere instrumental genre that claimed total independence from vocal genres. And within the fourth movement, Beethoven reincorporates choir and vocal soloists. For the vocal part of the last movement, Beethoven set the 1785 poem “Ode to Joy” by Friedrich Schiller (1759–1805). The text itself praises joy, peace, fraternity, and unity. In this regard, its universal themes parallel those of the Joyful, Joyful text. Throughout the 25-minute movement, Beethoven weaves the famous tune among choir, soloists, and instrumentalists. Consequently, musicologist Joseph Kerman wrote that, even today, composers live under the shadow of The Ninth.

Here is the hymn in its completion: www.youtube.com/watch?v=L045n_Sfsb8Here is the final movement of Beethoven’s Ninth (which – and I proudly DO NOT hide my bias! – I encourage you to listen to): www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChygZLpJDNE&t=1293s

HYMN HISTORY: JOYFUL, JOYFULDr. Vincent E. Rone (Director of Music)

I received my government issued stimulus check last week and it got me thinking that while some people can really use it during this time of crisis, and that for others it is not nearly enough, there are many other people whose standard of living probably hasn’t changed much during this pandemic and are living quite comfortably without the stimulus check. They are still able to pay their bills and buy whatever it is they want to buy just as they always have. To be perfectly honest, I wondered if I am in that category and it gave me pause. If you read this and realize that you might be one of those fortunate ones, might I suggest you consider donating your stimulus money to some worthy charity? The local St. Vincent de Paul Society, the F.O.R., the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food bank, or even Archangel Gabriel Parish. All of these organizations have seen a drop in donations and could use your help in continuing to minister to people as they always have. I hope this is something you will think about as you consider your blessings.

Thank you AGS Teachers This year has been quite the change for our teachers, and we are so grateful for all they have done to ensure a consistent and quality education for our children. Since day one, they have been able to offer synchronous in person with a virtual learning option for our families. It has not been easy, but it has been rewarding. Our faculty is exceptional. They serve not only as educators but as role models for their students. As a small token of our appreciation, we had Pittsburgh Yard Greetings set up a special message as a surprise for our teachers. We hope they each know how much they are loved.

Celebrating and Showing Love for AGS

First Grade Celebration

Throughout the year our teachers let their students know how special they each are. Especially this year as we navigate many obstacles and changes, we cannot believe how absolutely amazing our students have been. They are ready to learn, wear their mask diligently to keep everyone safe, and have shown such flexibility and resilience. To show gratitude to their students, our teachers and faculty come up with fun ways to make their days special. Our first-grade classroom received a big surprise to show just how appreciated they are on a soggy Thursday morning! Upon entering the classroom, they had a balloon adorning their chair, a school water bottle and they had a pizza party for lunch! We try to remember that it is at times in the smallest gestures of selflessness and generosity, that we can impact lives the most.
