The righteous sisters Martha and Mary were believers in Christ even before He raised their brother St Lazarus (October 17) from the dead. After the murder of the holy Archdeacon Stephen a persecution against the Jerusalem Church broke out, and Righteous Lazarus was cast out of Jeru-salem. The holy sisters then assisted their brother in the proclaiming of the Gospel in various lands. Sts Martha and Mary are also commemorated on the Sunday of the Myrrh-bearing Women.

Apolytikion in the Third ToneSince you believed in Christ with strong and ardent faith, and ever worshipped His divine and mighty deeds, you both adorned yourselves with all the splendor of sacred virtues. With your holy brother now, you are also granted to dwell with the ranks of Saints on high, O sisters of Lazarus; and with him, O wise Mary and Martha, you pray for us all unto the Master.

Kontakion in the Third ToneIn the town of Bethany, you dwelt of old; now in Heaven you abide in Paradise, where our Lord’s countenance shines. For you gave your hearts and souls up with fervent longing unto Him that is the Life and the Resurrection; as you stand on high, O Mary and Martha, pray Him to grant salvation to us.

From the Holy FathersWhen the Lord cried: ‘Lazarus!’ the man awoke and lived. The Lord knows the name of each of us. If Adam knew the name of each one of God’s creatures, how could God not know each of us by name? Oh, sweet and life-giving voice of the only Lover of mankind! That voice can make sons of God out of stones. How can it not wake us from the sleep of sin!

Caregivers Update In April, an elderly care-giver who knew he was dying of cancer was concerned about the care of his wife after he passed away. He was her primary caregiver and did ev-erything for her. He decided that the only solution was to kill his wife and himself. He did not complete his plan; so now, what does the state do with him? Does the state indict and incarcerate a dying man who killed his wife out of love and concern? I cannot even imagine how the chil-dren of this couple are dealing with this most unfortunate situation. As Orthodox Christians, we know that this was not the right solution to the problem. We cannot judge the man; only the Lord can do that. However, the tragic story il-lustrates the tremendous bur-den that falls upon the shoul-ders of the caregiver. One is

not to bear that burden alone. In Galatians 6:2, we read that we should “Bear one another’s burdens…” Unfortunately, many do not heed these words. They may think that they do not want to bother others or that they have to be self-sufficient. This kind of thinking only hurts the care-giver and ultimately, affects his/her ability to give care. The National Sisterhood rec-ognized the plight of the care-givers and added the Caregiv-ers Committee. At this time, the main thrust has been to use the newsletter as an avenue to let caregivers know that they are not forgotten. There is much more that can be done. If there is anyone who is interested in chairing this committee, please make your interest known at the Nashville meeting.

Clergy HealtH and Wellness Program

Following an extensive discussion of the immediate and urgent needs of clergy, presvyteres, and their families, the commit-tee, as an initial step is recommending the implementation of a systematic study of the challenges clergy, presvyteres, and their families encounter. The study would produce the survey data through multiple instruments including focus groups in each Metropolis. Through this study the needs of clergy and their families would surface, from which necessary information would allow for the development of the tools necessary to ad-dress these needs.

A couple of weekends ago the National Board held a meeting in Worcester, MA which I attended. At this meeting the discus-sion of a nominating committee was one order of business for the executive board. I would like to inform everyone of who will be on the election committee, as well as how elections will work this year in Nashville. First, I am thrilled to say that Ellie Dogias and Pearlann Bith-os have agreed to join me on the nominating committee. I want to thank them ahead of time for all they will do while they are at Clergy-Laity. I look forward to and know it will be a pleasure to work with both of these ladies. At Clergy-Laity 2004 the election process was changed and does require a bit more work for the committee while at C/L. At the first event... the ice breaker... the nominating committee will open the floor for nominations... the committee will accept all names at that time, and from there check on the eligibility of each name for these offices. All offices are open for elections, and the qualifications of each office were out lined in the last newsletter. If there are any questions or concerns about the eligibility of someone please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. Also the web site which has our newest constitution lists each office and their requirements. On Thursday morning a ballot will then be presented of those who are eligible to run for the office they were nominated for. Voting will be open to the members to vote upon. Elections will be held open for a certain amount of time, and it has been decided that at the luncheon held Thursday afternoon the new executive board will be announced. That’s about it in a nutshell... So now ladies it is up to you. Come to Nashville with this new process in mind. I look for-ward to seeing each one of you and catching up on all the good news.

How can it not wake us from the sleep of sin!

a memorable C/L! As you can see from the various events, we have attempted to incorporate the Clergy-Laity schedule into our schedule thereby allowing you the opportunity to attend Congress events as well as having quality time for US! We will begin and end the week in a social setting! Joan Bogdan and Olga Hountalas are planning our Monday Ice Breaker so we hope you all join us for a lovely afternoon! With the workshops on Tuesday and the Clergy/Presvytera Dinner on Wednesday evening, we will end the week by having OUR OWN luncheon on Thursday.
