PASTOR'S WEEKLY MESSAGE19th Sunday of the Year A. August 09, 2020
OUR GOD OF GENTLENESS
In the bible and among many religious traditions, a mountain is a place of encounter with God. Abraham encountered God on the Mountain, where he made an offering to God (Gen. 22.14); Moses received the Law on Mount Sinai (Ex. 19&20); on Mount Tabor, Jesus was trans-figured in the presence of Moses and Elijah and three of his apostles (Matthew 17:1-9). In to-day’s first reading, the prophet Elijah had an encounter with God on Mount Horeb (1Kings 19).
Earlier on, Elijah had challenged the prophets of Baal to a contest on Mount Carmel during which he petitioned God to send fire as a sign of God’s presence to consume the sacrifice. God came down as fire as consumed the sacrifice which led to the doom of the prophets of Baal. After the death of these false prophets, Queen Jezebel became furious and threatened to kill Elijah. Faced with this, Elijah ran away. He walked forty days and forty nights until he got to the mountain where he had an extraordinary encoun-ter with God as we read in the first reading. There came a hurricane, then an earthquake and then fire but God was not in any of them. God, who had years before revealed his presence to Moses on the same mountain in the earthquake and fire, did not do so this time with Elijah. God came in a gentle breeze, what the Revised Standard Version translates as “still small voice.”
Elijah was very observant. He recognized the presence of God in the tiny whispering sound. How often has God passed by unnoticed, in the tiny whispering sound and seemingly insignificant events of our lives? Many times we seek God in the spectacular events and miracles so much so that we fail to recognize him when he comes to us in the gentleness of the breeze, the soothing comfort of a neighbor’s word, the secret thoughts of our hearts and our consciences.
In the gospel, Jesus went up the mountain to pray, to communicate with his Father, and draw strength from Him. Meanwhile, the disciples felt the absence of Jesus as their boat was being tossed about by the wind. Jesus came walking on the sea and he calmed the wave for them. At the invitation of Jesus, Peter also walked on the sea but when he began to focus on himself and the wind around him, he sank. At various times in our lives, we are like Peter. When we are going through the turbulence of life, we focus on our problems rather than focusing on Jesus who can solve our problems. The disciples called on Jesus when their boat was tossed around by the wind and Jesus calmed the storm of their life. How happy (blessed) shall we be when we know where to go and who to call! As we call on Jesus he will stretch out his hands and save us and calm our troubled waters. He is truly the Son of God!
Solemnity of the Assumption of Our Lady: The Assumption celebrates the mystery of Mary sharing in the glory of the risen Christ in heaven. This dogma promulgated in 1950 states that the Virgin Mary “having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.” This solemnity is always celebrated on August 15, so it falls on Saturday this year. According to the directives of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, when it falls on Saturday, it is not a day of obligation. However, we will have Mass celebrating this Solemnity at 8:30 am on Saturday, August 15. I invite all who can, to join us to celebrate this special feast of our Blessed Mother. New School Year: St. Mary Magdalene Catholic School will begin her 2020/21 school year on August 24th. With the unprecedented pandemic, lots of changes are being made to the school calendar. We have given our parents and students the choice of either in-person or virtual learning as we monitor the pandemic with the goal of having every student in the classroom for learning as soon as possible. Understanding the risk with the coronavirus, we have taken measures that will ensure the safety of our students and teachers who choose in-person learning. This will be possible with the cooperation of everyone keeping recommended precautions and safety measures at home and on campus. Our liturgy and religious education will remain a highpoint of our school week. Therefore, Wednesday weekly Masses at 8:30 am will continue throughout the school year and we will Livestream the Mass to our families at home. I look forward to an exciting school year. We still have openings for students from PreK3-8 grades. Please call the school office at 281-446-8535 or email [email protected] for registration.

August 09: “Although we may feel unsure how best to comfort those who mourn, we must stand with them in their time of suffering. Miscarriage touches the lives of many people, yet all too often this tragedy remains unaddressed. This lack of response not only of-ten leads to unresolved grief, but also fails to clearly manifest our belief that each person, from conception onward, is precious and unique.”
August 16: “Abortion affects countless marriages more than many people recognize. But there is no doubt that God will bring great healing to those who trust in his infinite mercy. If a past abortion can be acknowledged and addressed, a married couple can make great strides in experi-
encing even more fully God’s design that ‘the two shall become one’ (Mt 19:5).”
Stewardship Reflections
August 09 - Stewardship Faith: “He said, “Come”. Peter got out of the boat and be-gan to walk on the water toward Jesus.” - MATTHEW 14:29When you hear Jesus calling, do you respond with Stewardship immediately and trust that He knows what He’s doing? If so, you are walking on water! When we say “yes” to Jesus, we feel the power of his presence in our lives. We can feel the freedom it gives us! Listen how Jesus is calling you to live the extraordinary life He has intended for you.

Accompanied by stirring music, stunning videography, and insight-ful narration, this three-part series will instigate fur-ther meditation on how you can respond to Christ's sacrifice and continue carrying out his mission in his Church.

MENSAJE DEL PÁRROCO
Page 13 | August 09, 2020
