PASTOR'S WEEKLY MESSAGE

21st Sunday of the Year B, August 26, 2018

Whom will you serve?

For the past six weeks, we have been reading the sixth chapter of the gospel of John. Today, we read the conclusion of that chapter. Jesus miraculously fed the people with bread and because of that, they came back to listen to him. He taught them to seek the bread that will last forever, to seek him, the bread of life. He said that his fl esh is real food and his blood is real drink and that one must eat his fl esh and drink his blood to have eternal life. This was too much for many in the crowd to accept. They can’t believe that Jesus truly meant that they had to eat his body and drink his blood. Many people left him. Jesus did not apologize for his statements so that he could be popular. When the people left, he turned to the disciples who were still waiting and asked if they too would leave. Peter responded with the saying: “Lord to whom shall we go, you have the message of life.”

In the fi rst reading, Joshua asked the people of Israel to make a choice between serving the God who saved them from slavery and continues to supply their needs, and serving the gods of other nations who have no power to save. The people made a wise decision and chose the God of Israel: “Therefore, we will serve the Lord, for he is our God,” they said.

Our faith is not based on political correctness. Our life in Jesus is not about surveys or opinion polls. If Jesus were to base his mission on the popularity of opinions, then there will be no Eucharist for us today neither will there be a savior that hung on the cross. In the life of every Christian, there is a moment of decision to say “yes” or “no” to God. In making those decisions, we are not to base our choice on the opinion of people or popularity. We must base our choice on the direction of God himself. As we make decisions of faith every day, let us do so by seeking to do the will of God.

We need more Catechists: The summer vacation is over for most families as students and teachers are now back in school. Our parish religious education program will also begin very soon. We still need more teachers or catechists to help with teaching the faith to our children. Are you a Confi rmed Catholic who is in good communion with the Church and is enthusiastic about the faith, please call the church offi ce to speak with Mike Smith. Training will be provided on August 26, 28 and 29 as well as September 4, 5, and 9. God surely has a lot of good things in stock for us this new school year. His plan is for us to succeed, to have faith-fi lled and fun-fi lled lives. The faith that many of us received as infants must be allowed to grow now. We must make that personal decision to stay focused on God and his mission. Let us say with Joshua: “As for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.” Let us say with Peter: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

Festival of Ministries: As we are challenged to serve the Lord today, the parish Stewardship Committee invites every parishioner to the annual Festival of Ministries that will be held after all Masses the weekend of September 8th and 9th. This event allows everyone to learn about the different ministries that are available in the parish and become part of the ministries. A representative of each ministry will be available to answer questions about their ministry and how you can get involved. The parish life is not complete without the ministries. We need you to be an active member of the parish through your involvement. God bless you as you do so!

Capital Campaign Committee Meeting: The fi rst meeting of the Capital Campaign Committee will be held on Mon-day, August 27th at 7 pm in the parish offi ce. I am grateful to those parishioners who have agreed to be part of the committee. As the campaign takes off, we will need the help of more parishioner and indeed every parishioner for a successful campaign. May God bless our efforts!

Have a blessed week!

CCE / FORMATION & YOUTH MINISTRY NEWSLooking for Catechists: If you are a confi rmed Catholic who loves your faith and likes kids, we need your help to help shape the future! We need cate-chists, someone to share their faith with others, to help teach during our “school-year” CCE program (September - April). We offer three sessions per week, Sunday afternoon, 3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m., Tuesday night, 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. and Wednesday night, 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. and each one needs 50+ adult cate-chists to staff the classrooms fully. This doesn’t hap-pen without amazing people … would you be one of them? Trainings are scheduled for August 26 (3 pm), 28 (6 pm), 29 (6 pm), as well as September 4 (3 pm), 5 (6 pm), and 9 (6 pm). CCE classes begin the week of September 16th.

We currently are in desperate need of middle school (6th - 8th grade) and high school (9th - 12th grade) catechists on Sunday and Tuesday. Please contact Mike Smith for more details.

Fall 2018 “Sacrament Orientation”: If your child attended the 2-week “Summer Study” CCE program this June and they need preparation for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist, please plan to attend a very important Sacrament Orientation Meeting on Monday, August 27th at 6:00 p.m. in the Church. We will review guidelines, calendars, and answer questions. You will also be able to purchase the sacrament book for $25, cash or check. At least one parent must attend this session; stu-dents are welcome to come.

Breaking Open the Word for Families for The 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time By Ginger Herrington

Reading 1: Joshua 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b Decide today whom you will serve. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Joshua calls upon the people to choose whom they will adore. They wisely choose to love and serve the Lord they have come to know: the One who freed them from slavery in Egypt, who led them to the Promised Land, and who performed great miracles for them. While God may not have performed “great miracles” such as parting the Red Sea for you, refl ect on how He has loved you and what He has done for you. Glorify His holy name! Thank the Lord with your whole heart! Know Him, love Him, and serve Him!

Reading 2: From the Letter of St. Paul to the Ephesians 5:21-32 The two shall become one fl esh; this is a great mystery, but I speak of Christ and the Church. St. Paul advises wives and husbands to love one another as Jesus loves His Church: wholly, completely, purely, and indissolubly joined. As Christ is Head of the Body (His Church), and the body will not survive without the head, so husbands and wives are to nourish, sustain, love, and help each other – united as surely as the head is united to the body. Catholic marriage, a sacrament, is to be a sign in this world of Christ’s love for His Church: a love so amazing that it knows no bounds. Be subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ, and love one another as Christ loves His Church.

Gospel: John 6:60-69 Jesus told the people: “The words that I have spoken to you are Spirit and life.” Jesus’ mes-sage so disturbed the crowd that many left Him. Even some of His disciples returned to their former way of life. They no longer followed Him. When Jesus turned to the Twelve, He asked if they, too, would leave Him. Peter spoke for the group: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of everlasting life.” If you have trouble understanding a Church teaching, please go to the One who has the words of everlasting life. Consult the catechism. Call a priest. Contact a member of our Formation staff. Ask your questions of people who can help you fi nd the right answer. Continue to follow Jesus, even if you have questions. Avail yourself of the sacraments to receive the graces you need. Pray for enlightenment. Remain with the One whose words are Spirit and life.

Our Pope Speaks: In short, we are called to show mercy because mercy has fi rst been shown to us. Pardoning offenses become the clearest expression of merciful love, and for us Christians, it is an imperative from which we cannot excuse ourselves. -Pope Francis, April 11, 2015

WEEKLY ANNOUNCEMENTS

FESTIVAL OF MINISTRIESCOMING SEPTEMBER 8 & 9! “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD,

Alleluia”

As we look forward to another Stewardship event for our annual renewal and recruitment of volunteers, see how we, as God’s stewards, are called to follow

in Jesus’ footsteps. You are asked to pray and discern your skills and talents, so that you will be ready for the opportunity to volunteer by making a commit-

ment to serve in one of our many ministries here at St. Mary Magdalene.

Our parish is very special and we depend entirely on the generosity of our parishioners for the complete support of our parish. Our multitude of caring stew-ards has accomplished so much for our parish and

community around us. For this we are most grateful.

Committing to a ministry is more than signing your name on a paper; it is a covenant with God to serve him through the parish in a spirit of love and shar-

ing. It is following through and being available when called to serve, it is making the time to call, to visit,

to pray, to cook, to attend a meeting or whatever else may be needed in that ministry. This is how St. Mary Magdalene Parish has fl ourished for over 100 years, because our stewards honor their commitments to

use their gifts to serve the Lord.

The Festival will be held after all Masses SEPTEMBER 8& 9 in the Family Life Center.

MENSAJE DEL PÀRROCO21º domingo del año B, 26 de agosto de 2018

¿A quién servirás?
