Dear Parishioners:

Jesus tells us today ---“While some people were speaking about how the temple was adorned with costly stones and votive offerings, Jesus said, “All that you see here-- the days

will come when there will not be left a stone upon another stone that will not be thrown

down” [Lk. 21:6]. This definitely is not a happy modern ending.

Many of us would like the Gospel to fit neatly into our modern lives. This is not a modern thought, however, Jesus himself had the same problem with his audiences. God’s

word does NOT fit neatly into the world of any age. Spiritually the world is an enemy to us. It pulls our eyes away

from looking up to God, to a higher wisdom and shrinks our heart and soul — the smaller ones heat the smaller one’s world.

I was more than a little surprised after the election when so many seemed to be hysterical about America’s

choice for President. I am positive you heard such incidents such as -- of Cornell students gathered for a "cry-in"

to mourn the election results -- Tufts University, arts and crafts were made available for students to decompress and relieve their post-election stress -- The University of Michigan, provided Play-Doh for the coddled college kids

to pound and mush around – primal scream groups –hot chocolate – therapy dogs – ad nauseam. I think everyone who voted for other candidates was (is) disappointed. If my candidate loses, I am upset but enough is

enough.

This is what happens when we try to make life a therapy session. Life is a reality session lived over and over

again. Life is not easy because we live in a fallen world, we are our own worst enemies at times, subject to storms and others’ weaknesses, etc. It does not seem fair to suffer because others have messed up. I don’t think it’s fair

either; I should only suffer for what I have done. We forget, however, our sins and failures have effects on others.

If I steal, act recklessly, greedily, impurely, violently, etc. I affect others and they may suffer. It was not fair

that Jesus had to die on the cross, but he did. This very unfairness paid the debt our sins incurred. As we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King, we do well to remember that the True King is a servant to his people. The

Truest King will give his life for his subjects. How much more can a King be than to die for the most unworthy of

his subjects.

The idea of Christ the King has a very long history in our Church. Pope Pius XI officially established this feast in his Encyclical, Quas primas, in December 1925. In reading, the signs of the time (cf. Mt. 16:3) Pius responded

to growing nationalism and secularism. Russia and Germany were rising powers threatening all of Europe and the

rest of the world. Hitler’s Mein Kampf and Marx’s Das Kapital were finding their way into the political realm. Pius XI could see what was coming. (Popes often have a more comprehensive worldview partly because they are not

nationalistic which earthly kings, presidents, prime ministers, etc. must be).

As we celebrate this feast, it behooves us to reflect on areas in my life where Christ is not my King. The

Gospel today gives us an example of one who focuses on the material world and one who looks up to heaven. The Repentant Thief (we shouldn’t call him the Good Thief) saw his King doing what a great Kind does — die for

his subjects.

Jesus has died for you and for me. This is a good week to reflect on where Christ is not the King in my life. It

may be in financial areas (lack of generosity, struggling with greed, etc.) or my prayer life, my interpersonal relationship with my spouse or family (pride, lack of humility, etc.) scrupulosity, doubt, addiction to sex or

pornography, etc. While some of these may need professional counseling or other treatment, they all need to ensure Christ is their King.

When Christ is our King, our lives become more and more aligned with God’s plan for us to have a future full of hope [cf. Jer. 29:11). Our King rules with forgiveness, mercy and kindness. What better King exists?

Hail Christ our King! ¡Viva Cristo Rey!

Pax et bonum,

Msgr. Bill

2016 Directory

Please watch your mail for the 2016 Guidebook Directory. The directory will be mailed to all registered parishioners.

This is made possible by our advertisers. Please consider using their products or services when possible. Let them know you saw their add in the parish directory.

Next weekend, November 27, is the 1st Sunday of Advent! This will be the beginning of our new Liturgical Year. It is also the first Sunday we will have the Giving Tree displayed in the Gathering Space of the Church.

It is a tradition at St. Vincent de Paul Parish to reach out to the needy. We do this in a special way at Christmas. This year we will have the 2nd Annual Gift Giving Sunday the weekend of December 11. We will ask that everyone bring their gift with them to Mass. You will be invited to bring your gift to the altar during the presentation of the gifts. This is a beautiful way for our community to unite and share your faith and gifts with the needy.

There are three ways to help.

1. The Giving Tree will have tags available with a requested gift written on the tag. These request are from families affiliated with Guadalupe Center. Purchase the gift, wrap the gift, attach the tag to your package and bring it with you to Mass the weekend of December 11.

2. You will see envelopes on the Giving Tree with requests for Wal-Mart Gift Cards. These requests will be in the amount of $25.00 and $50.00. Take one envelope, pur-chase the gift card in the amount on the front of the envelope. Put your card in the envelope seal the enve-lope and bring it to Mass the weekend of December 11. The gift cards will be use by our Society of St. Vincent de Paul. They will distribute them to their clients to help those families have a Blessed Christmas.

3. We are also helping the Guayaquil Mission this year. Sr. Virginia has requested dress clothes for the children. The children are ages newborn through high school. They live in a very warm climate so light weight clothes will be most useful. Please purchase the clothes and bring them, unwrapped, with you to Mass on the weekend of December 11.

No matter which way you choose to help, you will be invited to bring your gifts to the altar during the preparation of the gifts. The gifts and the offertory collection will be gathered at this time.

This is a wonderful way to share your Christmas with those in need.

Msgr. Bill sent an Advent letter to all registered parishioners. If you didn’t receive one, maybe you are not in the parish data as a registered member. If you have a question regarding whether or not

you are registered, please call the parish office at 713-667-9111 during office hours. Ask for Mary Gosline.

There are extra copies of the Advent letter at the entrances to the church.

The Catholic's

Divorce Survival Guide DVD set viewing continues every Tuesday through 12/12/16, 6:45-8:45pm, MJFC 208. This is a 12 DVD set viewing with discussion afterward.

The Bible both begins and ends with a wedding story, and these stories have much to do with vocations. Genesis starts off the creation story of the first hus-band and wife; Revelation concludes the story of our sal-vation history with the wedding feast of the Lamb when the faithful are at last re-united with God. Our bodies are designed for communion with others. That we can appreciate the divine significance of this is greatly due to Saint John Paul II’s Theology of the Body, which drew from the Biblical teaching that we are made in the image and likeness of God the insight that our bod-ies are a true gift, and the medium for self-giving love. Created as we are with the capacity for both giving and receiving love, our relationship with our Creator is meant to be spousal. At the same time, it is meant to be virginal, that is, to be totally God’s, body and soul. Our religious give themselves body and soul to Christ, as virgins and spouse, for this lifetime and for eternity. In sacramental marriage husband and wife strive to help each other grow in holiness. Adopting the examples of Christ and his Bride, and the Father and the Son, these couples hold nothing of themselves back in their love for each other. Help us, Lord, to give ourselves completely in love to each other and to You. Then, as in the last chapter of the Bible, shall Eden be restored. Brought to you by the SVDP Vocations Committee. Pray for Vocations!

HOW IS GOD, IN HIS

INFINITE LOVE, CALLING YOU?

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright, © J.
