White block

program: Family house of 4 year: 2011

taskThe aim of the competition was to create a study of a house for a young family. While respecting the optimal ratio of price/performance, the study should propose maxi-mal standard of of living-comfort, and an energy efficient building. After all it has to preserve acceptable purchase value.

solutionA building in the city suburb? A house for a young family? The answer would be: rather smaller site with a maximal use of the ground plan. We offer housing with a low invest-ment into the land, but a large use of capacity. Inside the building, we do not want the corridors to be used space, on the contrary, we wnat these places to be incorporated into the residential space. By drawing free disposition, we try to create one level room divisible by sliding partitions. Frameworks is retracted into the face, each window visually and physically increases the effective area by 1m². We rely on basic shapes and vertical organisation. The house is a simple block, it doesn’t pretend any aesthetical ambition. We look for the essence in a pure and sophisticated layout. The proposal is a tower with countryside views. It is one of the ways how not to expand into the nature and how to accommodate the needs of man in accordance with his sur-roundings. On a small scale it shows a possible elimination of the widespread suburbanization.

what I learned?- before a competition it pays off to study the composition of the jury, their projects and attitude towards architecture- are we able to design a house against our own principals, if that is what the jury requires? Would an architect solve a similar dilemma working for the client?

Complex of Ostrava

program: new city structure location: Ostravayear: 2010area: 200 ha

taskSeveral decades of decay of the monstrous Vítkovice ironworks is calling for a vision. This monument under the UNESCO protection is icon for the whole Ostrava. The Ger-man Rhineland was the inspiration for the revitalization of area filled with former heavy industry objects.

solutionWe don’t want to propose the definition of the city. Euro-pian metropolises were coming to their existence during several centuries, and it was time that brought them qual-ity. We call for attaching these areas to the present struc-ture, we note the focal points and continue building on them a grid of other following points, which are embryos, seeds of the future city. We define only the basic fittings. communications and the framework of the project. Milton Keynes, who is our great inspiration, we emphasize the walking distance.

What I learned- the complex idea of project is the key element, which needs to be carefully maintained from the beggining to the end, has to be noticeable from the first sight, but is also reflected in every detail- it can be a difficult work without a leader in a team of 4 strong personalities

for children...

program: community centerlocation: Prague, Czech Republicyear: 2009area: 550 m²

taskA young headmaster of Kampa community center became the client for our semestral work. Although it was only an conceptual study, the requirements had a real character. We tried to design a space for the youth, children and their parents. The building can serve for social public evenings, leisure programs and other activities.

solutionUsing the children’s creativity, which is still unaffected by the upbringing and the environement, was the main motive of the project. Let them make their own world, let them shape it according to their mood. The kids can draw with chalk on the exterior facade made out of blackboards, it is possible to adjust the movable shadow panels, warm through the winter, cold in the summer. Living rooms are placed around the green patio, technical facilities are con-centrated into one unit.

what I learned- well concieved plan begins with the toilets- the simpler the house looks, the more work is hidden in its making

taskMotto: They are young, handsome, healthy, succesful...And they live alone. Not only they do not want to marry, they even refuse to live together. They are single. Unattached and it suits them... MUDr. Zbyněk MlčochHousing study for someone, who lives alone, who is young, economically secure, active, it is not bothered by ailments, and is significantly environmentally focused.

solutionWe tried to put ourselves into shoes of someone living alone. Does he want to be tied up by necessities of a big house? Or is he going to use minimal temporary dwell-ing, which includes variable interior with an option of expansion? We answered untraditionally to the question of benefits of a panel building in term of ecology. The building is not fixed by modern technologies. It uses rain to irrigate added flower pots on facade, wind for drying laun-dry located on the hanging grid on all the the floors of the northern side. Residents can come up to the large terrace to profit from the sun energy.

what I learned- take appart of a competition means to choose idealy a partner, who shares the same or similar thoughts- the difference between attitude to competition and a real job emerges when we decided how much time give to the project. We cannot afford to sacrifice a lot of energy into a competition, because of the risk to be rejected without any “feedback”

Suburb of Paris

https://vimeo.com/39942493

program: standard apartments, students livinglocation: Ivry sur Seine, Franceyear: 2009 area: 6000 m² app., 8000 m² student app.

taskWhat are the options in the 2nd zone of Parisian agglom-eration, the quarter Ivry sur Seine? The city structure is full of great contrasts and significant buildings of the past century. Concrete housing development is mixed with low housing. The goal is to find a site of potencial urban revitalization.

solutionThe main idea of the proposal is to create an intercon-nected space in the city, where buildings are not a barrier, but a link. Vast park and an old train station form a huge area, dead zone in the middle of the district. The concept of founding new apartement houses initiates integration the place into the city structure. Broken shapes came about be-tween compromising the density use of site and the noise restrictions. Parter became walk-through and habitable area. Dispositions direct their view to the park, turn back to the tracks.

what I learned- finding my own task is sometimes more difficult than the solution itself. - finesses of presentation: distinguishing between the bird’s eye perspective (which the user is not commonly familiar with) and the normal perspective, placing textures into the vizualization makes it more costumer friendly, symbolism quickly and easily explains the intentions, describe only the unseen

Social center Ivry

https://vimeo.com/39938192

program: sport, music center, offices location: Ivry sur Seine, Franceyear: 2010area: 2500 m²

taskThe suburb of Paris. The major part of quarter is inhabited by the lower class. The task was to create a sports center, music center and the Town Hall in one buiding. The site is located in comminuted housing area.

solutionIntegration of 3 functionally complicated programs into one complex forms clearly distinguishable substances made of different materials. A patio is located in the core of the site and is accessible by a ramp, which is a continuous path in the internal part of the block. A place of meetings, social contact. A concert hall, a climbing wall and conference rooms are oriented around this point, they are the moving scenery and their facade is changing together with the life inside.

what I learned- exact and brief expressions are essential parts of cooperation with international students- a high quality team project involves often conces-sion from ones own ideas for the sake to the group’s benefit
