MAYOR ROADS

San Pedro of Atacama (SPA) is Chilean town and a commune located to the east of the Antofagasta Region in the Atacama desert

The small town is located in one of the oases that are found in the highlands of the Antofagasta region. In this geographical area are some of the highest peaks of the Andes. SPA was one once the cradle of the Atacama culture, is now home to 2,500 inhabitants.

Its current importance, is because it is considered the archaeological capital of Chile and it has the most extreme geographical, sorroundings of Chile. It is privileged for the beauty of its landscapes and the blue of its skies always clear.

SPA is currently divided into di erent areas. This is due to the rst settlements which were associated with the practice of agriculture (350 BC). The population was organized in units called ayllus, consisting of a set of individuals related by kinship and economic

MORPHOLOGICAL GROWTH(Current Problems)

The City Center is currently a major turistic area of SPA Most of its arquitecture has been adapted to new uses It is also the place which has been afected less by the potable water shortage that has been taking place in the past years. The areas which are a ected the most are rural, where people are not able to store potable water for their daily use

PROPOSAL

The village currently lacks a center & identity, it is a rural area that is far from the center of San Pedro de Atacama. The land use is agriculture with new residential developments.

The design concept will create an oasis and give the village its own identity based on their cultureand current tourist attraction such as crafts and stargazing

Our proposal is to create a network of public squares that can provide a pleasant environments to people that currenty live or visit the place. places where water can become a major attraction and feature
