THE ROOM AND NARRATIVE 01autumn - winter 2015
Theoretical
year
place
This project is an exploration into the narrative that a structure or a group of structures can contain. Through predominantly abstract techniques, students were to build a 1:100 scale model using only three materials. For this model, I have used balsa, boxboard, and screenboard.
This model is representative of an artist's 'room' of creativity, that he travels into daily through the door of his imagination. In the room contains various parts of his life: the doorway. living room, bedroom, garden; each at different scales depending on its relative imporance.
NEWTOWN ART GALLERY 02
Newtown, Sydney
year
place
Given a real site to work with, students were to propose an art gallery situated along a main road in Newtown, for an artist(s) of their choosing.
I chose to create an art gallery that specifically accomodates for Chinese political artists that often do not have the opportunity to display their works publically. As such, this gallery is made to facilitate the artworks of Ai Weiwei and Yue Minjun.
As the project site has a unique shape and orientation, lighting and materiality were important features during the design phase.
CAN FELIZ precedent study 03autumn - winter 2015

collaboration
For this collaborative project, students were to research and model a building from provided photographs and floorplans. This predecent study investigates Jørn Utzon's personal Spanish retreat: Can Feliz on the island of Mallorca.
Using only balsa wood to model the building, students also had to provide parti and poche drawings to creatively interpret and analyse the building elements.
For the precedent investigation, students were required to produce parti and poche drawings to show their understanding of the building elements within their chosen structure. In the parti to the right, the I have seperated each room within the building into the seperate different colours. Moving from warmer to cooler depending on the number of different uses each area provides. For example, blue areas might include the pool, fireplace, bedroom; whilst yellow areas include the patio, balcony, and general social spaces.
The watercolour parti paintings below and to the far right are to give a different perspective for the viewer into what is involved with the buildings structure. Although the parti on the far right shows the floor plan of the building, I have taken it further by depicting what a visitor at that building will see in certain rooms of the building. The rooms coloured yellow are south-facing, recieving the morning sun.

DATUM 04summer - autumn 2014
Theoretical
year
place
This project was a study in the concept of the 'datum'. From two clients: Revival Cycles and Steinway & Sons, create architecture consisting of three spaces; one below ground, one above ground, and one on the ground plane. The spaces above and below ground are the clients studio workshop, the space in the middle however, is to be a showroom, connected by a stair in a distinctive and significant way.
Students were to design this space starting from an iniital sectional drawing which were inspired by several adjectives. The goal of the exercise is to generate a building concept, whether realistic or theoretical, that embodies those ideas.
From these, a building is formed.
As attention to material was also an important factor in the design, a series of textures inspired by chosen adjectives were to be used in the final
render.
THE SPACE BETWEEN 05summer - autumn 2014
Theoretical
year
place
In this project, students were to explore the possibilites of the "Space Between" elements. For this, they were design two monuments using rectilinear shapes that represent two chosen architects and their philosophies. From their philoshophies, students were to create thier own concept, and with the use of the Lumion 3D modelling software, to create an environment that reflects the monument and its design.
The monument created using the concepts of "Electroliquid Aggregation" is represented by the following concept:
Freedom from the confines of stagnant imagination requires fantastic inspiration, nurtured and cared for, exceeding the
boundaries of expectation- Samuel Mok
I have chosen to stylise my Lumion environment alike the Emei Mountain, found in Sichuan Province, China; because of its grandeur and ability to evoke emotion and inspiration from a person's heart. The cloud, fog, and snow that are also associated with the mountain also hints a sense of fantasy, or mystery - hidden in the mountains. This monument is not a structure for humans to use, but instead: coy fish, which is used as a symbol for the physical embodiment of creativity.
In an attempt to depict the humble beginnings of imagination, I have used the basin in the structure on the left as a sort of "birthing pool" in which the beginnings of an idea swim around, only to be confined by its limiting water bound nature. The over arching gap above the pool alludes to the fable of the frog in the well, only able to see a small part of the sky; emphasising the trapped nature of the fish in the basin.
However, mirroring the concept, the fish are inspired by such a fantastic world around them that they break free of their watery confines and release themselves into the fantasy world around them, allowing themselves to be nurtured by ideas that have gone before them, and eventually growing bigger, only to nurture future ideas after them.
This circular notion is also a chinese characteristic of Yin and Yang, the gold and black symbolising the both "light" and "dark" properties of an idea are equally as important in the creative process.
I took an abstract reading of the requirement of a connection inbetween the two structures and as such I depicted my structures to be connected by a shared corridor, the rectangular shaped space that is taken out of one structure is identical to the other.
In short, the mountains, snow, coy fish, and structure create the Zen feel that I wanted to achieve, tying the components of the environment together, and accurately depicting the concept of Electroliquid Aggregation.
DESIGN SCHOOL student gallery 07spring - summer 2014
Woolloomooloo, Sydney
year
place
For this project, students were required to design a multi-leveled art gallery for the design students attending a local design school. It is situated in the Woolloomooloo area of Sydney where pedestrain access by both foot and bike commuters is necessary.
The student gallery was to be designed in tandem to a university kiosk and bicycle workshop; both located adjacent to the gallery. To represent the site, balsa models at 1:500, 1:100, and 1:50 were made.
The gallery is designed to have three main enterances, one from the main road, one from the kiosk, and one from the inner courtyard. All of these entrances lead into a ground floor where the circulation will channel the visitors up a staircase into a large triple heighted room. The contrast from the ground level to the second level will enhance the level of spaciousness within the gallery whislt still occupying a relatively small floor space.
The main feature of the gallery is its outside stair which wraps around the tower to the third level. This is to create a sense of intrigue for the viewer as the stair seemingly appears and dissapears at levels which are different from the interior of the building.
Large windows on the main façade act as a skylight, framing the visitor's view of the sky, allowing them to enjoy the unobstructed skylight whilst still being in a very industrial area.

LIFE AFTER PEOPLE cryengine 06spring - summer 2014
São Paulo, Brazil
year
place
With the use of the 3D interactive modelling software: CryEngine, students were to create an interactive environment simulating a building 100 years after its abandonment. Students were to research a chosen building and from plans, elevations and photographs, model its structure.
The goal of this experiment to is to research the destructive and decompositional qualities specific building materials display over time, when exposed to the elements. It also requires students to present the building within a cinematic medium working with different softwares.
Software that were invovled include: 3DSmax, Sketchup and CryEngine.
