URBAN

This project is an academic project based in Berrien Springs, Michigan. This was a collaborative group project that was de-veloped in a holistic view that shows the relationship between architecture, urban design, stewardship, health and civic life by developing an urban master plan for the Village of Berrien Springs. Because the proposal is in violation of local zon-ing ordinances, recommendations to the zoning ordinance were included in the project proposal. The objectives of our group was to pro-vide more economical opportunities that would also increase revenue for the Village; create a place that anchors the community; and to provide a safer relationship between the car and the pedestrians to facilitate crossing for the schools

This project is introduced as a project that would occur in phases to ease the financial responsibility to the developer. Our site is an urban industrial area that facilitates pedestrian traffic but focus’ more on the vehicle traffic making it easier to come and go while keeping it safe by controlling entry and exit points to the site.Design concepts that were integrated for traffic calming were on street park-ing, paving patterns at key points for crossing, and pedestrian island to create awareness for crossing.

Architecture as a Craft Studio focuses primarily on the materiality of Architec-ture, grounded in the historical tradi-tion of sound construction and detailed craftsmanship. In this studio it is the intent of the studio to develop in the student a clear understanding of how the parts of the materials used can be assembled in such a way as to celebrate and express a language of building. Stu-dents were asked to design a 1600-1800 sq. foot three bedroom, single family residence in Historic Heritage Hill. Stu-dents were asked to look at precedent in the neighborhood and design with tradi-tional American requirements such as a front porch.

The design objective for this project was to design a recreational facility that provides a hub for indoor related activi-ties associated with physical education and wellness while promoting the aca-demic and spirituality the is the heart of Andrews. It is also to provide guest rooms, commercial spaces, classrooms, graduation space, and a parking struc-ture that alleviates parking needs. This was a comprehensive building design using BIM digital techniques to manage the development processes. At the end of this project I had developed a design using building systems while gaining a comparative understanding of construc-tion, structural and mechanical systems in building design and development. I learned not only how to accommodate for a large program with above grade parking, but also how to use Revit Archi-tecture as a tool to help visualize a com-pleted idea in physical form.

BACKGROUND

Background Building studio focused on the creation of the fabric (of traditional urban downtown street types), where buildings of secondary and submis-sive nature, form a useful and vibrant streetscape. This structure is designed with the intent to create urban form, where the use of the building can be modified over time and as deemed nec-essary. Intended to infill one city block, the charge was give to design a mixed use building on Main Street, in Niles Michigan.

Placemaking Studio is intended to in-troduce students with urban planning, and the relationship of building spatial quality. The design is to respond to the existing fabric of the city but also pro-vide a place that can become the hinge to the City of Niles. In my particular project, the design hinges on the move-ment of pedestrian traffic by providing markers within the buildings or objects in the space to encourage movement throughout the site. Lastly, we were to focus on a place within the site to further develop which would be the anchor to which the project would revolve around. The anchor to the site in this case be-came the church and the church garden that blended into the main plaza that anchored the whole design.

The documents below are two different projects. The project to the right shows section drawings to a Carmel Church. The building is a new construction and affordabiltiy is a factor in the construc-tion type. In this project my role was to detail the sections to an existing design and research affordable building con-struction types and methods for joinery.

The project below shows plans for a renovation project at Andrews. My role in this project was simply to update plans which required field measuring and to create new, demolition, and exist-ing plans.

The following sketches are from a Europe study tour abroad where we studied different spaces and buildings to learn more about building forms and spaces in their historical context. Sketching helped me learn the relationship between a buildings edge and the human relation-ship to the details.

The renderings below are projects I have worked on that portray my skills with rendering techniques and Photoshop skills. I believe these skills help minimize the disconnect between a client and a designer to portray a more photo realis-tic visual presentation.
