A “good book” and whatever it is that makes a book beautiful are not easy to define – the details of a design may well suit one book to perfection, but be very much out of place with another publication. With this in mind the author and designer Bernd Kuchenbeiser launched his website “A good book”, where publications of many different genres are presented and discussed especially in the context of their creative design.

He was quick to notice how many of these fine books had a simple design combination of black text on a white background. This observation is why “61 books with black type on white cover” came into being as an “analog” selec-tion from the website: each book here is presented with the cover, a bibliography and a short text, anecdote, or even a quotation to initiate discussion.

The great majority of architectural productions attempt to satisfy our everyday needs and to maintain the status quo of this basic requirement, an effort which is generally dubbed the state of the art. But architects of all times have simultaneously attempted to leave these limitations behind them and to propose entirely innovative paths, challenging the status quo of their environments and creating some-thing entirely new.

During the 1960s and 1970s in particular, utopias served as a source of inspiration for many architects. Josef Müller-Brockmann (1914−1996) studied architec-ture, design and history of art in Zurich and worked as a graphic designer and teacher. His work is recognized for its simple designs and his clean use of fonts, shapes and col-ors, which still inspires many graphic designers throughout the world today. Max Bill (1908–1994) is primarily associated with the terms “Concrete Art” and “Environmental Design”. He was active in nearly every area of art and design, which were universal concepts for him. The cooperation of Trix and Robert Haussmann with the Röthlisberger carpenters, which started in 1979, yielded numerous successful experiments in artistic and hand-crafted furniture. Not comparable to furniture from the retail store, these exclusive designs were sold as a limited edition of 15 pieces each.

For the first time, a publication presents the full scope of furniture that was developed in Trix and Robert Hauss-mann’s “Allgemeine Entwurfsanstalt” for the Röthlisberger Kollektion. The product is a challenge to train the eye and percep-tion.
