After the fALL: Architecture in A new economic cLimAteARCHITECTURE NOW! 7 features an arching overview of today’s architecture,
from modern to radically avant-garde. As with previous books in the series,
Architecture Now! 7 includes a broad variety of projects from around the world, as
well as some works of art that have a direct relation to architecture, from the likes
of Giacomo Costa or Shinro Ohtake. It also explores how the recent economic
downturn has led to fewer large-scale projects, but has also stimulated creative
thinking, as architects find new ways to work imaginatively inside budget con-
straints. Large-scale works include the futuristic Chinese Central TV Tower in
Beijing (OMA) and the Burj Khalifa (SOM), the world’s tallest tower and centerpiece
of the Gulf region’s most prestigious urban development to date.
philip jodidio studied art history and economics at Harvard University, and
was editor in chief of the leading French art journal Connaissance des Arts for
over two decades. He has published numerous articles and books on contem-
porary architecture, including TASCHEN’s Architecture Now! series, Building a
New Millennium, and monographs on Tadao Ando, Renzo Piano, Santiago
Calatrava, Jean Nouvel, and Richard Meier.
Hinzu kom-
men ausgewählte Kunstprojekte mit direktem Architekturbezug, darunter Arbeiten
Now!, den Titel Building a New Millennium sowie Monografien über Tadao Ando,
Renzo Piano, Santiago Calatrava, Jean Nouvel und Richard Meier.

One of the most surprising contributions to the 2008 Architecture Biennale in Venice was Gustafson Porter’s TOWARDS PARADISE. Located at the exit of the Arsenale, along the Porta Nova and the Rio delle Vergini, this largely abandoned garden is located in the grounds of the former Convento delle Vergini, founded in 1239 and demolished in 1830. Historical maps show formal gardens and vegetable allotments on this site. Small buildings in a state of ruin surround the site and the garden itself emerged from an overgrown tangle of ivy and other dense vegetation. In their description of the project, the designers write: “‘Towards Paradise’ responds to the challenge of how to cultivate one’s garden, or how to tend to our affairs. In an idealistic world to have that capacity, one needs wisdom and a desire to search for wisdom. In French one’s jardin secret is the private and protected part of the soul.” They created three main areas within the overgrown spaces at the end of the Arsenale, “Re-member—The Store Room; Nourish—Abundance; and Enlighten—Contemplation.” The Store Room includes oversized shelves with the Latin names of extinct flora and fauna, while the Nourishment: Abundance sequence is a colorful dense space for conversation and observation of “the plant world’s earthly and aesthetic delights.” The Enlightenment: Contemplation area is a “long oval sculpted land movement covered in grass…” with “cloudlike curtains” that hover above, held up by balloons.
