St. Mary’s ChapelSt. Mary’s, Ks
St. Mary’s College has been without a church on their campus for nearly 30 years, making it very difficult to retain a sense of identity. The challenge lies within satisfying the yearning for a classical catholic identity while keeping an eye toward the future. As the church is the center of the campus, it must also respond to student and patron movement to direct people to the formal eastern half of campus.

Light which enters the sanctuary must be gentle but unmistakable. By ensuring the exterior faces did not make contact, light is able to glow along the interior walls in an manner which reinforces the hieght of the space. A variety of methods were experimented on before allowing light to permieate through the interior ceiling.

Eureka Spring
Identity is a phenomenon that evades simple definition, even though some of its main characteristics are apparent. A part of Eureka’s identity is rooted within its historic spring. Enhancing the monumental significance of the spring by providing more ways for citizens to interact with the spring will grant a new sense of value for the spring’s role in the history of those families who live there. By making the spring a more accessible part of people’s lives and by encouraging the residents themselves to make something more of it, the community will strengthen itself and feel a greater bond with the land they call home.

During the first visits to Eureka, it was evident there was a lack of bond between members of the community. How can we reinvigorate a rural town with no sense of community? Our studio orchestrated a focus group for a small number of citizens to come and express to us what they thought were the most pressing issues. Afterward we built an installation to be placed in a small park in the center of Main Street where we asked any residents to come speak with us in a more informal setting. Residents had much to say, including a want for more recreational spaces.

It’s important to remind residents of their own heritage in order to reinforce that they come from the same town with the same concerns. This is achieved by repurposing under used public space as primary nodes for the community that speaks to the town’s past, such as a playground and sports fields built in vacant residential lots and a pedestrian path mimicking the old railroad line and links them with the train depot.

Eureka’s west entrance crosses the Fall River and handles most of the traffic in and out of town. The bridge serves as a front door for the rest of the highway; for some people it is the only part of Eureka they see. It is important that this thoroughfare present those people with an impression that Eureka has an eye toward the future and can take care of its own front lawn.

Eureka’s history can be traced back to a single location and moment when pioneers travelling west came across a spring leaking water from a hillside, where the decision was made to settle town. Enhancing the monumental significance of the spring by providing more ways for citizens to interact with the area will grant a new sense of value for the spring’s role in history for residents. Smooth concrete forms for seating gently rise from the ground, and rich wood bridges across the creek. Natural grasses and wildflowers will be used to soften edges along certain pathways. By making the spring more accessible and by creating a stronger sense of place, the community will strengthen itself and feel a greater bond with the land they call home.

Mixed Occupancy Apartments
Liberec is nestled in the valleys adjacent to the borders of Germany and Poland. In the center of the city is a large open lot which was the site for the construction of a new shopping mall. During excavation workers hit water which flooded the site and led to the abandonment of the project. The result is a new small lake in the city center surrounded by the city’s transportation hub and residential areas.

Because the land resisted the new construction, it seems appropriate the site demanded something more personal. The north half of the site makes good connections for traversing east and west, and the south half presents a fantastic view toward the city and surrounding mountains. The building program is an apartment complex which takes advantage of all this while aligning itself with the contours of the hill.
