  • THE UNKNOWN PORTO - REQUALIFICATION OF EX FACTORYCastelo da Maia | Portugal

  • REQUALIFICATION OF EX FACTORY

Magazine 8D proposed the architectural contest "The unknown Porto" which brings up the requalification of the abandoned area from an ex factory in Castelo da Maia at north of Port in Portugal. Caste-lo da Maia is a city located in the high-way N14, which connects two of the most important cities at the north of Portugal (Port-Braga). The difference between this two cities and Castelo di Maia, is that we can call this one "The generic City", it has a characteristic lack of "places", where the cars become its principal habitant and the infrastruc-ture is dominated by the landscape which becomes its main architecture.

The idea of the project is to transform this area into an urban node, which con-nects the different flow systems that meet in the area of study, such as the metro station, the infrastructure and the pedestrian walk. At the same time this node creates a connection between this systems, where the user, whether its a citizen or a tourist, can easily move around the project area.

In the project there is the awareness that a Node means a space of pause, where it gives the user a place to be around. This brings up a challenge, given the generic city type, which we are talking about. So it would mean to have places like gas stations, banks, auditoriums and even a greenhouse. This node would try to control the infrastructure of Cas-telo da Maia in a way that it generates an order in its urban habitat that allows one to locate him or herself, in a place thats ruled by disorder, but at the same time it maintains its dynamism.

"Zenone, accettata la natura istantanea del tempo, osserva che una freccia tirata dall'arco passa attraverso i vari punti della sua traiettiria e a un dato istante, si trover in quiete in un punto di questi punti. Ora, se la freccia in stato di quiete in un punto, non potr per denizione essere in movimento: quindi il moto non esiste." Ventura, Nico, Lo spazio del moto: disegno e

    ACCESSO

Simultaneously to the insertion of the urban node, the project pretends to develop a space between the 2 principal infrastructures: N14 and the Metro line. This sill generated from these two lines must work as a place of maximum interaction, providing public spaces, service areas and agricultural and commer-cial areas, etc. Increasing the interaction between Maia with Port and Braga.

  • The main idea of this project is to introduce a vehicular ramp design that works as an infinite loop, which takes the car inside the building to get to the spaces that are divided by different programs. One of these spaces is the main building and it fulfills the role of a Lobby, this is the only building that reaches every floor and helps the user to understand where is the check point.

  • PAJARITOS - REQUALIFICATION OF FAVELABarrio Pajaritos. Caracas | Venezuela

  • The favela Pajaritos is located in the urbanization Chacao, one of the high-est social-economic urbanizations at Caracas city in Venezuela. Pajaritos is grounded over a brook that comes from Avila Mountain and ends in the Guaire River. Is commonly known that in Caracas brooks are used by the urbanizations to dump the sewage from the community, affecting the Guaire, principal river of the city that crosses from west to east. Because of this all the residential buildings denied their relation to the brook, and built a high wall, making the residents of Pajaritos invade the terri-tory left behind.

The project tries to modify this reality already naturalized in the city, hypothesizing that the brook has to pass a cleaning treatment, the proposal tries to integrate the favela with the residen-tial buildings around the brook. The ground height is released of the favela construction, to generate different activities related to the recreational and commercial programs providing new relationships between both communities, also created a new public space in the city for the residents and non residents. Taking advantage of the natural slope of the ground, the residen-tial buildings in the south are elevated from its original ground height, creat-ing an access to the recreational inter-ventions. In spite of the increasing height of the new residential buildings from what they were in the beginning, it simultaneously decreases from the ground height in the north, giving us the rest of the recreational space in the under-ground areas, making a new start in the residential building from the original ground height.

This new residential building doesnt affect the way of living for the original Pajaritos community, is a hori-zontal building that still conserves the original disposition of the families but increases in space, from 60 people per housing making it to 150, allowing new families enter to the community.

  • MADRID COMMUNITY CENTREMadrid | Spain

  • MADRID COMMUNITY CENTRE

The historical center of Madrid is tied in the north with the Gran Va, west and east part with the Parque El Retiro and Palacio Real, while the south part limited by the new infrastructure united from the original doors of the antique walled city. In the inside exists a group of different squares, connected between each other with a minimum effort but with a very strong connection.

Madrid community centre is an architectural contest which proposes the recovery of the Mercado la Cebada located in Plaza de la Cebada at the neighborhood La Latina. The Mercado La Cebada is not only a trade market its also a place for social-cultural exchange. The difference with others neighborhoods, is that La Latina is not known as tourist place, as most of other squares of Madrid. The project conserved the program of the market and increased its value for the com-munity adding other program activi-ties like workshops, art projections, playgrounds, transforming the market into a Cultural Centre for its resi-dents.

  • The project doesn't try to interrupt the natural dynamic that a city like Madrid owns, so if the square a begging or ending point, its at the same time a part of a system that needs to continue its flow. The rooftop is triangulated trying to accentuate the directional flows of the city and some parts are located above the height working as a lookout.

  • The outside of the project is com-pletely modified leaving only the print of the original square shape, which has been conserved for many years with this particular form. The building instead is burrow under-ground of that massive print convert-ing the cover into the square, where you access to the Market. The cover is reinterpreted in to the shape of Plaza de la Cebada, becoming a dia-loguing part between the market and the urban city.

  • PLAZA ANDRES ELOY BLANCOCaracas | Venezuela

  • INTEGRATING THE SQUARE WITH THE CITY

Andres Eloy Blanco square is locat-ed in the historical center in the city of Caracas, Venezuela. The center is organized with an urban grid. In contrast with other squares also located in the center, this one presents a 6 meters depression from the main avenue height and it has suffered numerous transformations during the years, even though in the surroundings there are important historic build-ings, very eclectic for the period they were built, such as the modern building of the Banco Central or the neogothic church. There are also commercial buildings nearby that dont have historic value.

Two volumes start in the square attached to the surrounding lots, without any architectural value, accenting the square that remains between the Banco Central and the church. The new square, cuts across both volumes generating an internal passage inside the urban grid, that allow the citizens to cross it without having to go to the main avenue. The square maintains the depression at north but its con-nected to the avenue through a big staircase.

  • The main challenge of the project was to combine all the situations that take place in the square, seen as a place of conflict, in order to organize the uncontrolled social activities that the citizens carry out in it. The volumes have an administrative program for the may-oralty and a recreational program for the citizens.
