motivation

I am a 27 year old graduate from the Institute of Architecture and Design, Aalborg University, Denmark. I completed my Bachelor studies of three years at Szent István University, Budapest, Hungary. These three years gave me the basic knowledge and skills of this profession namely construction methods, principles and lexical knowledge. Individual design tasks taught me to think independently and manifest ideas with a realistic technical background. After my graduation I had the ambition to gain a master level education abroad. I was attracted by Scandinavian design and culture because its simplicity, uniqueness, and honesty. In Aalborg I encountered with a totally new approach of designing by educated along the principles of PBL(problem based learning). It combined technical and aesthetic qualification within problem solving and design. My specialized education has given me tools to be able to design in an environmentally and structurally sustainable way. By the end of the program I was required to possess the knowledge of mastering simulation tools for : acoustics, indoor climate and energy consumption. During my master studies I spent a semester in the capital of Northern Scandinavia, Oulu, Finland.I got familiar with urban design and city planning which enabled me to be able to precieve architecture on a bigger scale. However my exchange scholarship lasted only half year, I already feel an appeal to live my life in one of the Nordic countries.During the Bachelor Programme I completed nine months of internship in Proform ZRT, Budapest. The internship focused on drawing big commercial buildings and contributing to the interior design. Since I am, by nature, very interested in graphic arts and from 2011 I occasionally do architectural visuaIizations for individuals as well as for just fun. For me architecture is a way of communication between designers and the public. It is a process of transmitting visual culture by creating aesthetically and physiologically better living environment. I see myself as a problem solver, adaptive and tolerant. I am used to work in groups because this is the most used method at the University of Aalborg. I want to gain my skills in architectural design and construction by working close to professionals. I am interested in digital, prefabricated design and environmental sustainability.

The following plan is one of the projects I designed during the second semester of my Bachelor education. The given task was to design a compact living house for a single woman who works as a fashion designer. The maximal floor area for the house was limited up to 64m2. The site was located in the wealthy district of Budapest which was thought to be suitable for the woman who works with fashion. The building form of the house is based on a catwalk that runs through the main volume of the house. By this, such spaces as the living room located on the ground floor and the balcony on the first floor are created. Two main functions are included in this red strip. They are the lookout of the house, the steps which are the catwalk and the bedroom. The interior of the house was also designed to be completely red.

The following project was designed in

the second year of my studies. It was a

conceptional local solution of the inner city

building deployment. The site of the project

was located in the busy and quickly developing

9th district of Budapest.

The edifice shows the ambitions of reducing

the density of the buildings in the urban

fabric and also the extention of the green

areas. The rehabilitation plans of the district

are engaged in increasing the parks in the

neighbourhood which is mainly reached by

the unity of the old blocks. The underground

parking system is automatized. The buil-

ding has seven flats - nests. They are small,

sufficient and suitable for two people, which

allow the target audience of the project to

be people with limited needs and funds.

house with 7 nest03

The main holder structure of the buil-ding is steel and concrete. Two concrete truss-walls provide the stability of the buil-ding as holding the flat-blocks, the nests. The narrow but very bright staircase is placed between the walls which are opened at the top and at the street facade.

The objective of this project is to bridge theshores of Limfjorden creating an inhabitedsettlement across the fjord. This connection is tobe considered as a journey, offering a variety ofdifferent experiences such as dwelling, a bathingestablishment inspired by the Nordic traditionsand hence, a close contact with the water and thenatural phenomena related hereto. The bridge isto be situated in front of the coming House ofMusic, connecting with the coast of Nørresundbycharacterized by its natural sceneries. The bridge design is based on a vision whichstates a journey related to the connection andinteraction with the ever-changing water element.Furthermore, the bridge strives to be tectonic;binding form, structure and function together in a unity

by using the iterative approach of formfinding. To complement the design of this largescale structure, Jørn Utzons additive principlesare used – accompanied by the form-fi nding thisensures a rationalized structure that clarifi es thestructural composition.

Page 11: Architecture Portfolio

L I V I N G B R I D G EThe main focus, when staying inside one of the dwellings, should be concentrated on what is outside the room: The water. In the dwellings, the journey does not stop. Here a celebration of the water should also be taking place. To emphasise this, the interior of the dwelling should not be too expressive, since it cannot be accepted that it overshadows the main attraction of the journey. The keyword for furnishing the dwellings is simplicity. A system of wooden lamellas (horizontal) forming panels is introduced to secure a simple expression, while also emphasizing the horizontality of thesurrounding nature. The panels will be used to serve two functions; as solar screenings and to cover the practical functions of the hotel room, such as wardrobe, toilet - and bathing facilities.

In between these layers, another dwelling way is unfolded, in the form of individual units, capable to offer an holistic experience of relaxation and refreshment. These modules looking like randomly rolled dices are in reality grouped together inclined qualities of a neighborhood with common areas of interest always in close connection with water and the ways of experience it. This time, “utility belt” functions as a barrier between public and private.

06Oulu urban develOpment

Spending an exchange semester in Oulu, Finland was an outstanding life expierience for me. I got familiar with the Scandinavian culture from a different perspective than Denmark. Nevertheless I encountered various forms of Finnish hospitality which made an overwhelming impression on me, together with the original sauna experience. The semester consisted of three modules: Design in Urban Context, Urban Development, and Ur-ban Lighting. I have never designed in such big scale as a whole city, so this fall semester really opened up ways for new approaches and look at the built environment as an architectural whole. The task for the semester was to design for a fictional scenario whereas Oulu is partly flooded by the sea of Perämeri. We decided to break up the strict grid structure of the old city by continuing and joining the main focus points with elevated stripes which we called ”fingers”. This allows a natural circulation within the new city structure. Each stripe has different identities such as housing, commercial and greenery. We created the mar-ina underneath the elevated decks in order to allow the possibility for boat parking and traffic.

07URBAN SUBURBIA The task is to design a sustainable residential area with Net Zero Energy buildings, which emphasize the importance of integrating technical & environmental design strategies with architectural expression. The architecture follow a pragmatic approach that optimize the desing and perfor-mance according to the context. During this project the technical issues are dealt with in parallel to the architectural development following the IDP (integrated De-sign Process), with the ambition to make the technical solutions more integrated in the design.

The double story apartment is primarily

meant as a family dwelling having the

possibility to remove internal walls for

functional flexibility. The big window

upstairs is meant to work as a solar gain

window, shading the summer sun and

inviting the winter sun to both stories.

The living space downstairs has a more

public character with stone flooring

making it easy to maintain for both

kitchen and living room activities. The

more intimate and nurturing space is

located on the second floor, emphasized

with the warmer wood material. The main

balcony has a similar character to give

the impression of continuity from inside

to outside. It also enhances the effect

of a carving in the building volume by

creating the contrast between the internal

wood and the external concrete facade.

The residential complex will be developed to accommodate different types of families and people. This paragraph illustrates the strategy related to different apartment types, which will oblige various user needs. The strategy is used to accommodate the different user needs. The apartments will be both double story and single story. The arrangement of the apartments done according to the access system together with the common space in between the buildings.

School of Architecture and DesignAalborg, DenmarkThis thesis proposes an Architectural & Design School in Aalborgas a single and united entity. In the creation of a school that accommodates architectural and design education, there underlies a responsibility to utilize the space in an inspiring and vernacular way. Building an architectural institution enables the ability to create, but also the responsibility to serve as, an inspiring space that will contribute to the continual shaping of the region and its unique Nordic architectural style. The new buildings form language will aim to integrate in to the fabric of the city and depict itself as a benchmark for modern Nordic design within its urban environment. In order to execute this kind of a building the need to understand the region in terms of cultural and pragmatic context is required.

Sustainable Design principles will be implemented in to the design using the IDP method. The ambition is to materialize a program composition that respect honesty, transparency and environmental awareness, producing something that is typical of the region and the rest of the Nordic countries, showcasing modern architectural design. This will materialize in a new definition of vernacular architecture, an architecture that is prepared for the condition of the site whether it be climatic or social. This means that somehow the depiction of the society of the region needs to be imbedded in the DNA of the form language. In order to succeed the need to be tectonic and sustainable in a Nordic context must be achieved architecturally and technically.

_Interaction Hub

Not only physically, but also conceptually, a central part of the project, the amalgamation corridor is the spine that connects all the functions within the building. This is where people, occupants as well as non occupants, meet, share ideas and get inspired for their prospective agendas. The initial vision of this interaction hub derived from the aim to unify the architecture & design department, from its current disjointed situation. A situation that cause isolation that prohibits discussions, insight and constructive interaction between disciplines and class year within the department. So by unifying the department in combination with the park, thus the public, the outcome shaped itself to a movement, either through the building, or in between the functions. This is the interaction hub.

09The Zero Energy concept deals with a building that produces as muchenergyas it uses. This conceptual building was made within the frameworkof Danfoss Universe’ competition about the “future house”. The aim was to represent the zero energy concept in a building for future exhibitions on the site of Danfoss Universe. The building introduces several sustainable principles, including photovoltaic panels on the rooftop, a dynamic solar shading system on the southernfacade, ecological low-tech insulation with optimal U-values, principlesof Trombe-walls, thermal masses and heat recovery systems. Furthermore and probably most important the integrated architectural design process made it possible to not only reach the zero energy goal but even to present an energy producing exhibition space.

Floorplan

Natural ventilation principles

The circular design derives from discussions about architectural, indoor climate and energy optimizing parameters. Surrounded by different other activities in the theme park the shape does not suggest a hierarchy in the way the other “pavilions” are to be visited. It allows a homogeneous flow around it. The circle is the shape that has the most area in comparison to its outline. That means that the building, due to its shape, reaches the maximum planar area with the minimal outer wall surface what has positive influence on the total energy balance. The building’s entrance is orientated considering the main visitor flow on the site. The generous circulation inside follows the circular path though dividing the building in two half’s in a gentle way letting possibilities for exhibitions that do not occupy all the spaces. The exhibition rooms are faced towards the north and the circulation towards the south in order to provide exhibition rooms with optimal light conditions and to place the corridors inside a sunspace as a sort of transition space that communicates with the outside. One half corridor and one half exhibition space encloses the outside courtyard. Ten distinct exhibition rooms make up the function of the pavilion following the needs of Danfoss. This includes one special room that marks the entrance and the exit of the building. The room lives up to special needs and also provides the possibility to function as start or end point for exhibitions or as satellite space, separated from the rest of the building. In spite of the pavilions homogenous floor plan the roof tilts towards the south and indicates some sort of direction. In this way the area of the south facing glazing is minimized and the courtyard gains on solar radiation also giving the inside corridor more daylight. Thirdly the angle optimizes the use of photovoltaic panels and solar thermal collectors and finally results in an increasing height of the interior spaces optimizing the conditions for natural ventilation.
