SAN BERNARDINO VALLEY COLLEGE

The SBVC Auditorium has been the architectural gem of the campus for more than 70 years. The Auditorium was built in 1937. It went through a major retrofit in 2006.

The current restoration and renovation project will provide accessibility for the public and students. The proposed back of house spaces, for major renovation, include: black box studio, green room, wood shop, and classroom. The exterior and interior will be restored to its original condition.

With 18 buildings and 32 portables the current high school site requires major renovation and reconstruction. Due to the size and complexity of the project, construction will occur over several years and will be divided into six phases.

Development of investment properties for townhouses, multi-unit house, apartment build-ings and single family homes. Projects include new construction, renovation, maintenance, and managing of craftsmen and rental users. The investment properties of Ameribuild are located in Loma Linda and Redlands. Further projects include renovations of client owned homes.

Masterplan

The approach to the revitalization of this region is to create walkability, multi-use and adaptively reusing existing buildings. The arrangement of the open spaces encourage pedestrian movement. Daily users of the revitalized site include residents, transit users, business owners, students and artists. The proposal is to incorporate a mixture of land use and variety in the area. To allow differing programs to serve the public’s needs. The mix-use element at Bergamot Station will contain galleries and loft housing. Distribution of land use is incorporated throughout the design. The main priorities were densification and preservation of existing buildings. These ideas were selected for the implementation of infill and adaptively reusing existing buildings. The design of open space encour-ages pedestrian gathering and movement.

SEA WEAVE: BRIDGING THE GAP

PORT OF LOS ANGELESMASTERPLAN REVITALIZATION

Walking through the existing Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro, there is a great sense of disconnect visually and physically. The community, port and water, function as three separate entities. Its disconnect creates a non-effective site because it does not allow for these elements to interact and function together. The solution is to ‘weave’ these three elements together by ‘bridg-ing the gap’ and creating new port life. The integration of the elements will lead to the improvement of the social, economic, and ecological qualities of life. The designed entities that will empower this proposal includes Travelling Through Time, Culture Finds History, Port’s O’Call, Artist Play, Entertainment Island, Retail Eco-Therapy, Floating Suburbs, Sea Breeze Beach.

Culinary Harvest is a culinary cooperative, a partnership of farmers and chefs. The farmers produce the yeilds on the 400 acre site and the chefs prepare and sell the food within the three buildings that make up the culinary cooperative on the 30 acre site. The three structures are the Culinary Market, Kitchen Studios, and the Farm Store. The irrigaton system for the row and circular crops utilizies the existing holding ponds as water sources.Culinary Harvest re-interprets the traditional farm and how it engages within the community. This approach has the potential of creating a new form of interaction along with an architectural language that engages people with the process of farming. This entails the life of planting, growing, harvesting, preparing and consuming.

Structure and Facade System

The architecture has been designed to incorporate hydroponic greenhouses within the Culinary Market, Kitchen Studios (teaching & production) and the Farm Store. This allows the users to retrieve their own crops by infusing the farming processes among the Archi-tecture.

THE HABITAT

A custom 600 sq-ft residence spanning over a valley in Mt. Baldy. Travelling through the deep contours of the topography creates a natural transition upon the arrival of the spanning form. The design is intended to maximize the visual and physical connection to the valley.Utilizing natural materials of concrete and wood engages the form among its environment.The open plan allows flexibility for the user. Exposed wood brace frame, shear walls and a double-T foundation allow for a pure 30’ span. The dual-purpose custom furniture accomodates multi-use types including sleep, storage and lounge. The model was built to follow a realistic construction sequence. Rebars in concrete, wood studs in walls, and beams and joists as a roof system. Scale is 1”= 1’-0 ”.This project called for me to be the Architect, Structural Engineer, Civil Engineer and Contractor.

Los Angeles fifty years from now will be in a state of over-population with a lack of housing and an even more dependency on imported crops. The lack of organic and locally grown crops will affect the health of the citizens of downtown L.A.

This community is meant to be a second urban layer among the existing urban fabric of downtown Los Angeles. This community of interacting bio-shelters and living pods is accessible from the vertical circulation that is the tree-like shafts. As the population grows overtime, the community will mature and spread throughout downtown by occupying voids within buildings and increasing the growth of food to its inhabitants.
