Together with Dante Alighieri High School Expansion, the School of Music and Arts is probably
the most distinctive work of LTFB Studio, and one of the most appreciated public buildings of the
contemporary Bucharest architecture.
Usually, all the public buildings in post-communist Romanian era are, with a few notable
exceptions, of a very poor quality. This situation is generated by the lack of real competition and is
perpetuated by a mix of factors that rely on the political and legal context. The active legislation allows the
political decision-makers to promote a public investment, on the exclusive price basis criteria rather than
on the design quality and efficiency. That’s why designing a remarkable public building in Romania is an
exceptional event, and for me, as a young architect it was a very challenging objective and a revealing
experience.

Romania generated very few quality works in the last twenty years.’

The site is located between a primary school, a small park and
a small wooden church, in a district full of monotonous block of flats built
entirely during the communist era. The lack of identity of the dwellings
district and the vicinity of the small social places around the site made us
conceive the school as a landmark of the district that exceeds the basic
technical needs of the wanted disciplines.
In a usual school in Romania, the indoor public space is perceived as a redundant one, or is
often treated as a transitional space, a linking corridor where people are on the run from a place to
another, not needing or wanting to stop and communicate with each other. In our proposal, the
indoor and outdoor public forum , the place for social interactions, is intended to play the main role.
Longitudinal section that shows the big red volume ‘floating’ above the Forum
The most distinctive space is the forum, located at the basement level. This
space can be regarded as ‘the heart’ of the building, playing an integrating role as the
main social interaction space for all the other different functions . Its skin is transparent
towards interior and exterior. The light comes from everywhere, also through a skylight
that articulates the white and red volumes. It can be a space for public meetings,
various exhibitions, conferences, courses etc.
The red volume is ‘floating’ independently over the forum space and
accommodates the two performance halls, a small one for chamber music and a 200
seats hall for bigger concerts or events, with the entrance through a small bridge above
the open space of the forum.
At the same level, along with Concert Hall and its Foyer you can find the
Visual Arts ateliers, conceived as a flexible open space that can be divided into
separate studios through wall-like mobile cases provided with lockable wheels. At the
same time, this space can be transformed into an exhibition open space by placing all
the wheel mounted cases on a side of the hall and opening all the glass walls on the
This is the second public building designed by LTFB
Studio, a project that was also remarked by the design
publications. Unlike School of Music and Arts this project is an
extension of an existing old 70’s highschool.
The idea of an extension of Dante Alighieri High
School appeared mainly as an answer to the need of an
integrated educational center that comprises after-school
facilities and other activities related to the main educational
purpose of the building. Some of these types of spaces and
activities are chronically missing in most of the schools previously
built in Romania.

The nonfunctional and degraded old swimming pool
in the eastern part of the schoolyard was integrated in one of the
new building's volumes. Between the new swimming pool hall and
the existent sports hall, the resulting space is used for the annexes
of the two sport facilities and for an adjacent small sportive dance
hall.

The randomly perforated
facade of the educational volume
should be read in a playful key, as a
contrast to the uniformity and monotony
of the existing facade.
This “game with windows”
seems a puzzle with pieces of the tree
foliage and green light filtered through
them, as seen from the inside.
We proposed a new type of
indoor classroom, but also a new type of
outdoor one. The terraces placed
between the classrooms could be used
sometimes for teaching and learning in
the open air.
This is another project that
emphasizes the role of the public space.
This project proposes new spaces of
interaction: the schoolyard, the school
canteen, the sports facilities and the
large and glazed corridors, that
communicate with each other. All the
public and social spaces gravitate
around the intimate courtyard.

Expansion and School of Music and Arts - were for me a real opportunity to manage
medium size and complex projects form the very beginning of the concept phase, passing
through all stages of the project and execution to the moment of the opening ceremonies.
These two of LTFB Studio most important projects - Dante Alighieri High School
The first day of school at Dante Alighieri High School - 1’st of September 2012
The opening event for the School of Music and Art - may 2012
Designing and managing these complex projects was a real challenge and an important way of gaining experience and
skills in coordinating all the parts involved and in supervising the construction process in order to obtain an accurate result.

Facade Remodeling for multifunctional building - Bucharest 2014Cofounder and managing partner at LTFB Studio 2007-2014
The starting point for this project was an existing four storey
concrete structure, previously built on the basis of a very schematic, and
deficient project. The building has a pretty advantageous site, situated
along the path for the A2 highway, called “Autostrada Soarelui” (The Sun
Highway), the main route for the seaside tourists.
The challenge was to
transform a poorly designed and
unfinished building in a multi-
functional one that should become
a landmark for the neighborhood.
The solution we found
in the first place was to unify the
facade in one simple envelope.
The glass staircase
would play the central role, as a
big urban lighted sign, that should
be visible form the speed of a car
running towards the highway.
The white strips width variation forms a gentle filter for the light and uniforms all the lines
in one gesture. The idea was to obtain a clean and ordinate building envelope, that would bring
some quietness and sobriety in a noisy and unsettled context
The entire envelope was generated in Grasshopper (algorithmic modeling plugin for Rhinoceros) in order to adjust the width and the density of the
horizontal strips and the dosage of the gaps between them. The result is a smooth transition from opaque to transparent, in a simple pattern for the entire facade.

The four storey of aprox. 1000sqm building hosts four different,
but complementary functions. The most visible ones are the fitness hall on the
fourth floor, with its glazed walls, and the coffee shop on the ground floor. The
third floor which comprises an aerobic dance hall and the locker rooms is, in
fact, a functional extension of the fitness hall. At the first floor there is the hair
salon and on the second a children playground.
Most of these functions are arranged as open spaces, allowing
high flexibility and potential reconversion.

The aluminium horizontal strips play also the role of light filter for the interior space. The algorithmic generated facade was analysed with Diva plugin
which runs daylight , solar radiations, based on real environmental data (climate based metrics as .epw files). The density of the sun shading pattern was obtained in
correlation with the daylight factor generated by the software, based on the outdoor and indoor illuminance, and materials reflection indexes.
North Facade- visible form the main boulevard
The fitness hall is situated on the fourth floor and is designed as an open space with panoramic view over the city. Mainly beccause of a very
reduced slab level of the existing structure, we proposed “smashed in trianges” mirror ceiling that provides a virtual extra space, and allows a flexible setup
for the equipments and fittings.

The hair salon, situated on the first floor, is an open space
with light mirror walls, arranged in various angles, separating the four
different functions. This system of mirrors and mirror walls allows the
viewer to see fragments of what's happening inside from the entrance
and reception zone as overlapping parts of succesive reflection
forming kaleidscope like images.
Here are some samples of the images we proposed for two of these four functions that are currently in progress: the hair salon and the fitness
hall. These spaces have a common element that plays a key role : the reflection. The mirror has a very high potential of opening and extending the space
with recurrent and sometimes confusing effect, but is also a very useful tool in spaces like these, where your own (reflected) image plays the main role.

The coffee shop is in fact a functional mix between a coffee-bar and a small delicatessen store. The two functions overlap in almost every part
of the arrangement. The bar is a classical one, where people can sit and drink but, instead of the usual bottle display in the background, one can see a
long wall with lit glass shelves and plenty of delicacies. The coffee tables are in fact real showcases, with food display under the glass lid.
The children playground is an open space which comprises two zones: the
main space defined by the drawn ceiling and floor, with modular playground
equipment and the parents waiting space, with a little bar. The last one is conceived in
contrast with the children playground with white glossy finishes and white painted
modular furniture.
All the playground equipment is made from “slices” of CNC processed rigid
foam boards with protective flexible coating, forming simple geometrical shapes that
hide organically shaped tunnels and hollows.

The challenge for this project was to redesign a Romanian typical communist eighties apartment, situated in the center of Bucharest
and transform it in a contemporary apartment for accommodation or medium term rent.
Communist era apartment redesigned - Bucharest 2012Cofounder and managing partner at LTFB Studio 2007-2014
The entire layout had to be redesiged in order to solve the problem of the insufficient space. We designed an open and flexible relation
between the living room and the kitchen, with a folding table - bar as dining table.
In order to obtain a higher efficiency and a better use of
space we had to transform the 2 rooms apartment, in a 3 rooms one. A
half of the initial livingroom was converted in a second, larger bedroom.

Hair salon in Dorobanti neighborhood - Bucharest 2006
This is the first project I worked on after graduating in 2005. Here I managed for the first time a project in all the phases of the project and execution. The main difficulty of
the technical part was to coordinate all the elements for a perfect continuity, for example between the lines of the floor, walls and ceiling.

Even if it seems hard to belive, this is probably the first house in Romania entirely finished with apparent cast-in-place concrete. It’s a clear and simple approach of the house
near a lake, with 2 oriented volumes pointing directly to the lanscape. Along the sides of the terrain the two bodies are opened one to the other and closed to the surroundings.

The house was nominated at the Romanian Architecture Biennal - Bucharest 2008, and was published in all the
main architecture magazines in Romania.
The two concrete tubular volumes separating the living room on a side and kitchen with the dinning room on
the other, communicate through a glass greenhouse.
Samurcasi housing complex - Bucharest 2009
The aim of the project was to obtain a highly efficient setup for 8 houses on a site situated in a small village at 20 km away from Bucharest. Because of the narrow shape
of each terrain, the houses were designed to open the living room and the dining room on the rear side almost entirely towards a green and intimate garden. The white and rather
opaque simplicity of the envelopes is ment to unify and temper the perception of a viewer assaulted by the noisy and irregular lanscape of the late Bucharest suburbs.

The building si situated in one of the most crowded and congested crossroads of Bucharest. This is the road that links the center of Bucharest with two of the largest
neighborhoods of the town.
Each floor is an open space that plays the role of a lit screen, facing the trafic of the street, and consequently is a point of view over the town.
