Objectives and teaching methodsThe defining characteristic of the Programme in Architecture: Techniques and Design is an effective balance between educational activities with plenty of design experience and diverse subject contributions. The constant combination of theory and practical work, a balance of knowledge and know-how, allows students to monitor their learning. The workshop of the relevant year is the location for practical experimentation and concrete assessment of the learning process. The workshops and single-subject courses contribute to a particularly rich and articulated curriculum, which promotes the development of both critical and practical, operational skills. important role and allows the Department of Architecture and Arts to offer very advanced and valuable courses. The passage from teaching to learning and assessment is a central element in the entire educational process, which is especially expressed in the organisation of courses and workshops, with discussion and comparison seminars. The workshop of the relevant year assesses students’ ability to learn from the interdisciplinary relations when defining architecture design: this is also intended to be a logical and creative exercise that provides multiple variations to a formally complete solution. The first year of the course identifies and provides the cultural perspective and basic language; it is organised into a workshop-project year 1 and a structured grouping of single-subject courses. The second year is devoted to construction and environmental control techniques, developing aspects such as the history of architecture related to 20th century and contemporary design, periods in which technical and structural aspects are at the very centre of reflection. The third year specialises in contemporary urban design, with a special focus on the relevant core subjects and a view to developing the project year 3.

Skills developed by graduates– knowledge of the history of architecture and construction, the tools and forms of representation, the methodological and operational aspects of the basic sciences;– ability to identify, formulate and tackle issues of architecture and construction using the latest methods, techniques and tools; – knowledge of aspects relating to technical and economic

feasibility, calculation of costs and the production process of architectural and building works; aspects connected to their safety;– use of the techniques and tools used in the design of architectural and building works;– effective written and oral communication in at least one EU language in addition to Italian.

Professional profileThe Iuav Undergraduate Degree Programmes in Architecture prepare students for the profession of architect and allow them to qualify for the regulated professions of:– junior architect (enrolled in the professional register of Architects, Planners, Landscape Designers and Curators or Conservators/Section B)– graduate surveyor– junior civil and environmental engineer– graduate engineer

What does a junior architect do?– collaborates on design activity, construction management, estimates and trials on building works, including public works; – plans and manages works, monitors, measures, handles accounts and settlement for simple civil construction, through standardised methods and direct or instrumental surveying on current and/or historical buildings. The professional profile of graduates can be further specialised by attending a first-level Postgraduate Specialisation Programme and professionalising courses or other educational and training courses.
