PROJECT: RESTAURANT ARCHITECTS: PATCH DESIGN STUDIO

The lavishness of this compact eatery comes through in its bespoke furniture, accessories,

and a distinct colour palette.

FYI The distinct flooring on the ground level was designed using four different shades

of marble.

Somewhere in the midst of numerous commercial stores and retail outlets in South

Mumbai, sits a plush all-day dining establishment that is quite unlike its neighbours. The compact, two-storey space is shaped like a narrow box, with the kitchen and display counter on the lower level and the main seating on the upper.

An effective meld of strong metals and soft pastels, the restaurant follows a simple design language that is focused on making the space look and feel larger than it is. Marble flooring, wooden walls and a brass ceiling are the foundation of the space. The walls are painted a pale pink, so the focus shifts to the most eye-catching mascot in the space — a large golden flamingo. The bird is repeated in the form of a wall mural along the staircase as well.

FYI The staircase is a

box insert with hand painted flamingos on one side and a

cutwork metal screen on the other.

The space is quite small, just large enough to be entirely viewed from the arched entrance with a grand door. For the all-day eatery, daytime lighting is manageable, but at night, a fair bit of illumination is required so the space doesn’t look dingy. The lighting fixtures have all been custom designed to suit the space, like the brass pipe chandelier and glass globe on the ground level, and the metal pipe chandelier in the loft.

Compared to the lower level, the loft area is more subtle and quiet, for diners to have a calm eating experience. Simpler, with custom designed furniture, the loft keeps the drama to a minimum. Although the two levels are starkly different in terms of their vibe, the design team has managed to offer a holistic experience to the customers, which is held together by the sculptural staircase as well as a unified design approach.

The calm of the stationary flamingo and the flamboyance of the one in flight resonates with the design language

of the space as a whole.— Rika Chaudhry, Principal Architect, Patch Design Studio
