Lateral Thinking

Many hundreds of years ago in a small Italian town, a merchant had the misfortune

of owing a large sum of money to a moneylender. The moneylender, who was old

and ugly, fancied the merchant's beautiful daughter. So he proposed a bargain. He

said he would forgo the merchant's debt if he could marry his daughter. Both the

merchant and his daughter were horrified by the proposal. So the cunning money-

lender suggested that they let providence decide the matter. He told them that he

would put a black pebble and a white pebble into an empty moneybag. Then the girl

would have to pick one pebble from the bag. If she picked the black pebble, she

would become his wife and her father's debt would be forgiven. If she picked the

white pebble she need not marry him and her father's debt would still be forgiven.

But if she refused to pick a pebble, her father would be thrown into jail. They were

standing on a pebble-strewn path in the merchant's garden. As they talked, the

moneylender bent over to pick up two pebbles. As he picked them up, the sharp-

eyed girl noticed that he had picked up two black pebbles and put them into the

bag. He then asked the girl to pick a pebble from the bag. Now, imagine you were

standing in the merchant's garden.

What would you have done if you were the girl? If you had to advise her, what

would you have told her? Careful analysis would produce three possibilities:

1. The girl should refuse to take a pebble.

2. The girl should show that there were two black pebbles in the bag and expose the

moneylender as a cheat.

3. The girl should pick a black pebble and sacrifice herself in order to save her

father from his debt and imprisonment.

Take a moment to ponder over the story. The above story is used with the hope

that it will make us appreciate the difference between lateral and logical thinking.

The girl's dilemma cannot be solved with traditional logical thinking. Think of the

Page 5: Archive_docs_654_Library Bulletin - Jan - Mar 2009

SIBM LIBRARY BULLETIN

5

consequences if she chooses the above logical answers. What would you

recommend the girl does?

The girl put her hand into the moneybag and drew out a pebble. Without looking at

it, she fumbled and let it fall onto the pebble-strewn path where it immediately

became lost among all the other pebbles. "Oh, how clumsy of me," she said. "But

never mind, if you look into the bag for the one that is left, you will be able to tell

which pebble I picked." Since the remaining pebble is black, it must be assumed that

she had picked the white one. And since the money-lender dared not admit his

dishonesty, the girl changed what seemed an impossible situation into an extremely

advantageous one.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Most complex problems do have a solution it is only that

we must attempt to think.

Lateral thinking is the popular term for a creative, imaginative approach to

problem-solving that changes one's perceptions and conception of a problem,

allegedly contrasted with ‘linear’ or ‘logical’ thinking. The contrast is misleading, in

that logic does not tell you how to think, but only how to avoid inconsistency.

Interesting books on lateral thinking include:

Phantoms in the Brain: Probing the Mysteries of the Human Mind Authors: V. S. Ramachandran, Sandra Blakeslee

By Prof. Kaushik Gala

"Who am I? What is the meaning of my existence, especially if you are from India? Why do I laugh? Why do I dream, why do I enjoy art, music and poetry? Does my mind consist entirely of the activity of neurons in my brain? If so, what scope is there for free will? It is the peculiar recursive quality of these questions as the brain struggles to understand itself that makes neurology so fascinating.” One look at the quote above is enough to appreciate the breadth and depth of Dr. Ramachandran’s ambitions in the

field of neurology. Rather than being satisfied with the basic biological functioning of the various areas of the brain, the authors keep probing endlessly to gain insight into the unknown – that is the link between the fist-sized lump of tissue in our heads and the final frontier - consciousness. The tool of inquiry chosen by Dr. Ramachandran is the phenomenon of ‘phantom limbs’ - the sensation that an amputated or missing limb is still attached to the body and is moving appropriately with other body parts. By understanding how the brain represents the body (‘body image’) and how that image can change, the authors seek to explain all sorts of odd syndromes such as

Charles Bonnet syndrome, a disease that causes patients to have complex

visual hallucinations

Balint’s syndrome, a disjointed psychic paralysis of gaze

Capgras syndrome, in which there is no loss of recognition of faces or of the

ability to experience emotion but there is an inability to link the two

and many more. Each line of inquiry usually involves ingenious experiments devised by Dr. Ramachandran and his research colleagues; these serve to test various hypotheses made by the researchers on how various parts of the brain interact with each other while we see, read, talk, recognize, laugh, dream and meditate. Every once in a while, the reader has to stop and confirm that this is indeed a book originating from the medical world, and not a text on Eastern philosophy. Despite statements like this one – “Your own body is a phantom, one that your brain has temporarily constructed purely for convenience.” – the authors manage to keep a

Page 7: Archive_docs_654_Library Bulletin - Jan - Mar 2009

SIBM LIBRARY BULLETIN

7

tight link between the abstract and the neuro-scientific at every stage in this easy-to-read book. The last chapter – ‘Do Martians See Red?’ – gets deep into the consciousness question. Regardless of your personal leanings on this topic, you will appreciate the authors’ analysis of how various parts of the brain (particularly the temporal lobes) play a central role in consciousness and awareness. Let me end with this quote from the Preface: “Every scientist knows that the best research emerges from a dialectic between speculation and healthy skepticism.”

William Rothschild, who witnessed GE’s revolution firsthand, explains the five keys that made GE a global phenomenon—and gives managers a complete toolkit for duplicating its remarkable success. He explains the GE Code—the hallmark of all GE leadership teams—and provides a far-ranging prescriptive plan for strategizing the GE way.

Apply the Successful Management Strategies of the World's Most Competitive Company to Your Organization For over 125 years, GE has been a managerial, technological, and financial leader, continually outperforming the competition and boasting one of the most valued stocks in the world.

Now, in The Secret to GE's Success, Bill Rothschild, former GE Senior Strategist, draws out the key management lessons from GE's entire history to show leaders everywhere how they can achieve GE-like success in their own organizations.

Personality Not Included: Why Companies Lose Their

Authenticity And How Great Brands Get it Back,

By Rohit Bhargava

The methods for cultivating a personality shared in Bhargava’s book, while applied here to corporations, can apply in equal respect to the personalities of other large entities.

Doing the right thing is, luckily, a logical starting point for any company, country or person struggling with the idea of how to

cultivate a personality – and in the end - when boiled down to its basic elements, cultivating personality is one of the easiest things in the world to do.

As such, many of the overall themes of the chapter’s within this book are made so relatable that the golf analogy alluded to above acts as the perfect compliment to the more traditional business interpretations, for example:

“Faceless” used to work because big meant credible. This no longer works. Simply put, large corporations, who’ve based their past success on metrics like price point, rather than relationship cultivation will soon be staring into the face of a rapidly moving new market they can no longer comprehend enough to tame.

Discusses how accidental spokespeople are speaking for your brand. Embrace them. As Subway learned when it found Jared, the people and elements that will shape the story of your company’s personality are likely already out there – you just have to listen.

We find that back stories establish a foundation of credibility. You need one. Surly Beer has been around less than two years. But there is a real, personifiable story behind its creation. There is for every company. If you think yours is the exception, your targeted customers most likely will, as well, and choose to spend their time with someone a bit more interesting.

Fear of change leads to barriers. Finding your authority overcomes them. If NBC were a chubby little kid and old Saturday Night Live clips were bits of inexpensive – yet delicious – candy he refused to share - how would you feel about that kid’s personality? Now, go out to YouTube and conduct a search for Will Ferrell + Robert Goulet. How do you feel about NBC’s corporate personality?

Of course, sharing themes is only one half of the battle – and also almost exactly one half of this book. Students and kings of industry alike are encouraged to hold this book close at bay.

Risk Issues and Crisis Management in Public Relations A Casebook of Best Practice By Regester, Michael & Larkin, Judy

The reputation of an organization influences who we buy from, work for, supply to and invest in. In today’s complex environment, organizations have to understand and respond rapidly to shifting public values, rising expectations, demands for public consultation and increasingly intrusive news media. This is particularly important when things go wrong. This third edition of Risk Issues and Crisis Management has been completely revised and aims to define reputation, explore how to value it and provide practical guidelines for effective reputation management. It features new sections on the rise of

the socially conscious consumer and the new government world order as well the growing imperative for corporate social responsibility. Featuring new case studies on the MMR vaccine, the Olympic Games, Coca-Colas launch of Dasani water and Shell oil reserves, as well as issue management models from organizations such as Daimler-Chrysler, Dow Chemicals and Westpac, this book charts how rapidly the reputation management agenda moves and yet how slowly businesses learn.

Written in a practical, lucid and easy-to-follow style, Risk Issues and Crisis Management shows how issues and crises can be handled successfully and effectively with minimum damage and disruption.

'Clearly written and sympathetic without taking sides, this book could really make a difference for your company if the unexpected happens.' - "Marketing Business".

Strategy, Innovation, and Change : Challenges for Management By Robert Galavan, John Murray, Costas Markides

Any organization must ask three interrelated questions in order to develop its strategy: where are we, where do we want to be, and how will we get there? While the questions do not change over time, the realities and environments that companies face do. Given today's realities, how should companies answer these questions as they face the challenges of the 21st century? In this book, leading business school educators use their academic, yet

managerially-relevant, research to explore these questions. They divide the book into three sections-- Understand Your Situation, Develop Your Options, and Lead the Change--and take the reader through some of the latest thinking that helps answer these questions. All the authors have extensive international experience of working with senior managers and are well known academic researchers in their field. They present their ideas in a straightforward, lively, and purposeful way. Their goal is to inform, challenge, and provide practical advice and tools. The book serves as a guide to a range of contemporary business challenges, such as managing uncertainty, creating new markets through innovation, energizing people, leading clever people in organizations with limited hierarchy, and introducing radical change. The central focus is on the core concerns and responsibilities of senior management-- strategy and leadership. Clear, crisp, and to the point, this book provides an invaluable and coherent summary of some of the best current business school thinking on contemporary challenges facing organizations. It will be an ideal guide for both MBAs and practicing managers.

Global Business Citizenship: A Transformative Framework for Ethics and Sustainable Capitalism

By Wood, Donna J., Logsdon, Jeanne M., Lewellyn, Patsy G. This practical and engaging book provides a coherent approach to global business responsibility and ethics based on the latest research, theory, and practice. The authors incorporate numerous interesting and current real world examples to support the argument that corporations need to--and can--identify and implement processes that foster ethical conduct, ensure basic human rights, protect the natural environment, and enhance social justice wherever businesses operate around the globe. Global Business Citizenship combines elements of political theory, stakeholder relationships, business ethics, corporate social performance, accountability and measurement, and organizational change. Its practical approach encompasses "best practices" in stakeholder management, experiments in applying corporate values to local conditions, and social environmental auditing and reporting. Focusing on the strategic alignment and change management process for implementing business citizenship principles and practices, it is an essential supplement for any course concerned with ethics and social responsibility in today's global business climate.

Customer Satisfaction Delight By Dastoor B N

"This excellent book by B N Dastoor, very effectively introduces the reader to the art of delighting the customer. After all, in the global markets of today, you either delight the customer or disappear.

Today’s marketplace is teeming with diversities. Customers differ in their education, occupation,

perceptions, attitudes, lifestyles, preferences, expectations and opinions. And all of them do not want the marketer to “satisfy” them. They demand that they must be “delighted”. Customer’s expectations keep on changing significantly and unpredictably. But even today, many marketers concentrate on ‘selling-the product focus’ instead of ‘delight-the customer focus’. Greed And Corporate Failure: The Lessons from Recent Disasters By Hamilton, Stewart & Micklethwait, Alicia

"Would you like to know why so many firms with household names have gone under? Read this book. The businesses are very different but the answers are remarkably similar and not what you probably thought. It is not a technical book and the authors have the courage not to pull any punches. "A most thought provoking review of a very topical subject. A must for professionals and for all investors. This book, particularly to students who intend to make a career in the business world". "The most comprehensive view yet of the many corporate failures that occurred in the early twenty-first century. Written in clear and concise prose, Greed and Corporate Failure illuminates the root causes of the

problems faced by corporations on both sides of the Atlantic. With candour, precise logic, and uncommon pragmatism, the authors give the reader a practical set of recommendations to prevent their recurrence. "Anyone interested in value creation--whether management or investor--will find this analysis of failure deeply instructive. Sustained success comes from avoiding the causes of failure that Hamilton and Micklethwait identify." "Hamilton and Micklethwait take a cool and skeptical approach to the stories of Enron, Parmalat, Tyco, and other corporate disasters. This is the first time we have seen such a convincing yet fascinating explanation of what lies behind the latest crisis of capitalism. International Handbook Of Research On Indigenous Entrepreneurship By Dana, Leo-Paul, & Anderson, Robert B. `A must-have for researchers of developmental economics, as well as for entrepreneurship scholars, this collection assembles studies of indigenous entrepreneurship from five continents. To add value, the editors analyse the contributions and identify common themes, thus laying the framework for a comprehensive theory on indigenous entrepreneurship. Dana and Anderson demonstrate that entrepreneurship is not simply a function of opportunity, but rather opportunity recognition is a function of cultural values. For this reason, mainstream theories do not suffice to explain entrepreneurship in indigenous communities. Illustrated with breathtaking photographs, this volume is also reader-friendly for the non-academic.' `An exhilarating read that expands and explains the importance of ethnic and cultural variables in entrepreneurial activity. A must for the student of business, as an alternative approach from corporate governance is given as a success factor in business development. Consumer loyalty and satisfaction can only be achieved if the entrepreneurial skills within a businessman's armoury are developed along the lines identified by this new and exciting text.

The Ten Faces of Innovation: IDEO's Strategies for Defeating the Devil's Advocate

and Driving Creativity Throughout Your Organization

By Thomas Kelley, Jonathan Littman

INNOVATION is the lifeblood of every company-the fuel that keeps an organization going in a tough marketplace. But by its very nature it's hard to plan for, quantify and coach. In The Ten Faces of Innovation Tom Kelley explains how to do it. Kelley, author of the bestselling The Art of Innovation, reveals the strategies that his world-famous design firm IDEO use to foster original thinking and overcome naysayers who stifle. He identifies ten key roles developed by IDEO that anyone can adopt in order to innovate in different situations. Ranging from 'the anthropologist' and

'the hurdler' to 'the experience architect' and 'the cross-pollinator', they are all illustrated with real corporate examples and will help you transform the way you work. The result is a brilliant guide to fostering creativity.

The role of the devil's advocate is nearly universal in business today. It allows individuals to step outside themselves and raise questions and concerns that effectively kill new projects and ideas, while claiming no personal responsibility. Nothing is more potent in stifling innovation.

Hot, Flat, and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution - And How it Can Renew America

By Friedman, Thomas L.

Friedman brings a fresh outlook to the crises of destabilizing climate change and rising competition for energy—both of which could poison our world if we do not act quickly and collectively. His argument speaks to all of us who are concerned about the state of America in the global future.

Friedman proposes that an ambitious national strategy—which he calls "Geo-Greenism"—is not only what we need to save the planet from overheating; it is what we need to make America healthier, richer, more innovative, more productive, and more secure.

As in The World Is Flat, he explains a new era—the Energy-Climate era—through an illuminating account of recent events. He shows how 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and the flattening of the world by the Internet (which brought 3 billion new consumers onto the world stage) have combined to bring climate and energy issues to Main Street. But they have not gone very far down Main Street; the much-touted "green revolution" has hardly begun. With all that in mind, Friedman sets out the clean-technology breakthroughs we, and the world, will need; he shows that the ET (Energy Technology) revolution will be both transformative and disruptive; and he explains why America must lead this revolution—with the first Green President and a Green New Deal, spurred by the Greenest Generation. Hot, Flat, and Crowded is classic Thomas L. Friedman—fearless, incisive, forward-looking, and rich in surprising common sense about the world we live in today.

control their brands and how to cope with this power shift that affords the advantage to the consumer

The Back of The Napkin By Dan Roam,

The book is broken up into four sections and two technical appendices. Interspersed within the text are countless line drawings to be used as reference. Apropos to the central thesis of the book, it actually becomes quite difficult to read through the text, pause to look at a graphic and then return to the text. Instead, the reader will likely read through the text while blurring over the sketches and then stop to focus on one or two charts in detail. In his "Introduction," Roam explains the fundamentals of visual thinking using the napkin as both a metaphor and a visual cue. While many of us feel that we can't draw, the same isn't true of kindergarteners. Who's wrong? Well, using sketches not that much better than a primary school students, Roam demonstrates that neither is wrong. It's just that adults have forgotten how to express themselves visually. Roam then literally illustrates the breakthrough experience that led him to his conclusion.

Part two of the book: "Discovering Ideas" is exceptional. Here, Roam lays out the toolkit that any executive or designer should have in his or her arsenal to use visual expression as a presentation device. As anyone who's looked at spreadsheets or typical presentation materials can attest, rows of numbers or pages of bullets are often enough to make one's eyes glaze over. Since the book is targeted at a general audience, he next explains which visuals should accompany which concepts such that the audience is neither bored nor confused. One sketch, in particular, is among the best encapsulations of how to present thinking in a visual manner that I've ever seen.

Part three, "Developing Ideas" walks the reader through not when, but how to use the tools Roam has provided. I was pleased to see the progression from a blank napkin to a visual discourse on problem solving. Since a blank page can be intimidating, The Back of the Napkin actually walks the reader through this process, starting with a blank napkin and then drawing the most important part of the puzzle right in the middle of the page. Much as I once taught my CAD students, it's hard to go from directly from concept to finished product. Instead, the easiest beginning is to start with what you know. So if a student was designing a couch and came to me confused by the number of ways to approach the problem, I'd begin by asking them what they knew about their couch. Usually either the footprint or the seat-height was definite. So I'd have them draw the footprint on the ground plane from there, the next step of the problem was at least a little clearer. Roam takes the same approach: Want to draw the competitive landscape? Well, start with yourself, because after all, you know you're there. Then the rest will follow quite easily.

The fourth chapter of the book, entitled "Selling Ideas," explains how to make the transition with which the reader may already have had subconscious trouble. Just

Page 17: Archive_docs_654_Library Bulletin - Jan - Mar 2009

SIBM LIBRARY BULLETIN

17

as it's occasionally difficult to rapidly transition from the text of the book to the graphics and back, when thinking has been done visually, it can be tough to explain it in words. Using the case study method, Roam talks (and shows) the reader just how to do that with ease.

By the end of the book, I had no doubt that hearing or seeing a presentation from Dan Roam would be a compelling experience. My only regret is that he wasn't here to narrate it for me, because at times it became difficult to navigate between the text and the graphics. There was simply too much information here to have portrayed through one channel alone. Perhaps the best complement I can give is that by the end of reading it, I would have loved to have seen an all-graphics version of the book as well; and saying that about a non-artist's work is high praise indeed.

Imagining India: Ideas For The New Century By Nilekani Nandan

Leaders like Mr. Nilekani show us the way and when they share their views about modern, changing India and fill it with anecdotes, a young patriot like me can only ‘read on.’ There was a lot to read - the book is high on content and very opinionated. Mr. Nilekani’s father, in his own words, was an “ardent Nehruvian” and Mr. Nilekani was one of the founders of arguably one of Infosys, India’s most renowned companies the fact is as ironical as it is the insignia of the “change” that has, and is, becoming to us. In fact this is what the first chapter - Notes from an accidental entrepreneur is all about. Subsequent sections cover diverse issues and is structured into 4 parts dealing with issues in various stages of gestation.

Mr. Nilekani is indeed an “explainer” and terms that one hears about only in intellectually stimulating discussions are brought to the drawing rooms and coffee-table discussions thanks to the ease with which the author can blend them with the anecdotal narrative - something which only Mr. Nilekani - with his diverse world-view is able to accomplish.

I particularly liked 2 things about the way the book has been structured:

Certain areas which required explanations have detailed notes for reference There is a “Timeline of Key events” - where in 8 pages, important socio-economic and political events have been tracked from 1757 onwards. The events are hand-picked and is a wonderful “101″ for those who want to know how India evolved in all of 10 minutes. - And for those who do, this can serve as a ready reckoner!

Business Ethics

By Andy Crane , Dirk Matten The second edition of this award-winning book introduces business ethics concepts, tools and theories, and applies them to the corporation's key stakeholder groups. The subject of business ethics addresses what can be considered morally right and wrong in the way businesses make decisions and conduct their activities. This lively and engaging textbook covers the foundations of business ethics from a European perspective, and considers the implications of three major challenges facing the corporation: corporate citizenship, globalization, and sustainability. Building on the success of the first edition, new content has been added on personal values, Asian perspectives, and ethics in new technology. This new edition is packed with thought-provoking ethical dilemmas, examples, and cases such as Nestle, McDonalds, and BP. It extends its wealth of pedagogical features to include Ethics on Screen - a look at how the issue of ethics has been approached in films such as Surprise Me. through the "Five Levels of Influence": i) learning: a leader must be able to learn from anyone. ii) Performing: perservere through failure to find success. iii) Leading: extend your ability by expanding your team. iv) Developing Leaders: learn to trust your people. v) Develop Leaders who Develop Leaders: create a legacy. This book is full of prescriptive advice, quotes and anecdotes that illustrate their principles. Big Ideas For Small Retailers By John Castell This unusual book is written for people engaged in, or who plan to be involved in retailing, and encompasses a broad range of issues examined as through the objective but critical eye of a retailer. The book will be a source of inspiration to retailers - particularly those in small to medium sized outfits - as it offers a number of quick-fix ideas combined with some genuine money-saving tips. There are no back-to-school pages of flowcharts and complex equations, no legal jargon or unnecessary padding, and no patronising advice. Major topics covered include the company image, finance, buying stock, EPOS systems, trade associations, winning customers, market intelligence, competitors, background music, store security, returns policy, sales staff, the psychology of selling, using the internet, e-commerce sites, empty stores and much more. The book contains a great deal of information that is not readily or usually available to retailers in this fashion, being based on the author’s extensive experiences and knowledge derived from working in both retailing and banking.

Ocean of Wisdom: Guidelines for Living By Richard Gere

"A monumental teaching that is profoundly transforming and liberating. His words are seeds sown from his heart into ours".

The words of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, the spiritual and temporal leader of the Tibetan people, continue to bring inspiration, hope, and love to peoples of all cultures. His message of the universal need for kindness at every level, from person-to-person relations to global action, transcends all cultural and religious boundaries and provides a spiritual perspective on world peace and the

preservation of our increasingly imperiled planet. Readers can draw hope and the courage to face both personal crises and the multiple threats that surround us in the late 20th century. This book was compiled from excerpts of private and public talks given in North America. Ocean of Wisdom: Guidelines for Living has been translated into 12 languages and is in its fourth printing. As leader of the Tibetan Government-in-Exile, His Holiness resides in Dharamsala, India.

This book has been compiled from talks the Dalai Lama has made at various venues around the world. His thoughts are at once lively and profound, for, surprisingly to some who first meet him, His Holiness has a refreshingly wonderful sense of humor. The crucial necessity for world peace, including the overriding threat of nuclear weapons and the need to show concern for the environment are interwoven, and should be read by anyone who cares about the fate of our increasingly interdependent and imperiled earth.

IT Governance The Seven Habits of highly effective IT Governance

You can’t pick up a newspaper or turn on the television today without reading or hearing about a serious technology mishap. An IT security breach at discount retailer TJX, owner of T. J. Maxx and Marshalls in the US, exposed millions of customer credit card accounts to potential fraud. Overwhelming online demand for tickets to the World Series in Boston last year and the Olympics in Beijing in 2008 triggered system-wide failures. And what about the JetBlue fiasco? The discount airliner canceled hundred of flights, causing thousands of passengers to be stranded when its flight-operations system could not handle changes in its crew schedules and flight conditions. This article examines various IT governance issues and provides insights on how to develop an effective IT governance strategy. Articles E-Technologies WiMax: The World is Watching

This article shows how Schein’s career anchors can facilitate our understanding of the individual rationale for choosing to become an expatriate. These anchors and their influence on the decision to expatriate are discussed through examples, and an additional ‘internationalism’ anchor, especially relevant to expatriation, is also introduced. Finally, tow recent studies, one comparing self-initiated and assigned expatriates, and the other proposing a model of international assignment success, both relying on career anchors, are discussed.

Food For Thought

1. "Leadership is the influence of others in a productive, vision-driven direction and is done through the example, conviction, and character of the leader." – Chris Brady & Orrin Woodward

2. "Hunger is one of the biggest facets of leadership. Hunger provides the energy to begin, the stamina to persist, and the will to finish an endeavor" – Chris Brady & Orrin Woodward

3. "A goal is not a goal until the leader has written it down. This may sound trite, but it is vitally important. As with goals that are not specific, goals not written down leave the leader room to maneuver if things don't go as planned. But a written goal is hard to avoid" – Chris Brady & Orrin Woodward

4. “You can try to be something you're not, or be Great as someone you are!” -Glenn Algenius

5. “Life is filled with challenges and learning lessons... it all depends on how we handle them that makes our lives enriched or disempowered." – Marion Licchiello

6. “In the arena of human life the honors and rewards fall to those who show their good qualities in action." – Aristotle

7. “Every morning when we wake up, we are given a choice of keeping wanting to fight on to achieve one's goals, dream, or simply just live everyday like routine. Everyday is a new beginning, cherish it and you will find a whole new meaning in life not just a meaningless routine everyday." – Jasper T.

8. “Don’t be like the Key-holder who carries the key but never opens the door. You are the key, the very solution to the world's problem. You bear rule. Don't look down on yourself." – Philemon Ebuka

9. “It’s hard to help someone who doesn't want to help themselves! But it's not impossible! Don't give up on someone in need because you would not want someone to give up on you!" – Ethen Carrell

10. “Leadership is solving problems. The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help or concluded you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership." – Colin Powell
