DESCRIPTION
Visit Narvik and experience the northern lights and the arctic nature.TRANSCRIPT
Welcome to Narvik – the region of contrastsWelcome to the city between the steepmountains and the beautiful fjords. Narvik isthe city of contrast and we are humbled overthe fantastic nature and scenery we aresurrounded by. We hope that you are ready toexperience our great winter and northernlights excursions this winter.
The land of Northern LightsHålogaland is the historic name of Northern-Norway and originates from the Old-NorseHálogaland. The German celtologist, KasperZeuss, noted in 1837 that the word could bethe Old-Norse logi, meaning «fire». Háloga-land became Land des Hálogi, in other words«The land of Northern Lights». Narvik islocated in the center of Hålogaland – or Theland of Northern Lights- and is the perfectgateway for experiencing this spectacularnatural phenomenon!
Why is the Narvik region perfect for Aurora Hunting• The region of Narvik, with a population of19 000 inhabitants, is located between theNorwegian coast and the mountains whichboarder to Sweden and the Swedish La-pland. This makes it the perfect place tohunt the Northern Lights
• The region can offer a varied landscape withmany great locations to experience theNorthern Lights. • The weather changes quickly in the northof Norway, and because of our greatlocation between the coast and the SwedishLapland we have very good opportunities tofind clear skies in search of the NorthernLights. • It is also easy to travel to Narvik by both air, train and car.• The Narvik region is surrounded by fantas-tic and easy accessible nature. The regionhas good facilities for accommodation, adiversity of restaurants, and we have a localand authentic history.
When taking photos of theNorthern Lights, please considerthe following advice from ourgreat local photographer Pål Jakobsen:
• Use a tripod to get sharp images with longexposures.• Use camera type with manual setting (SLR).• Use a fast, wide-angle lens (14mm – 24mm)to capture the whole scene.• The faster the wide-angle lens is (low

f-number f1.4 – f2.8) the better, as this allowsfor faster shutter speeds and more light reachingthe sensor.• Set the aperture on the lens to the lenses widestaperture as a start – you can adjust this later and if you want more depth of field to get thefore-ground sharp, you need to increase both the f-number and the ISO.• Depending on the brightness of the aurora, setthe ISO to 200 – 1600• Set the shutter speed to 10-15 seconds as a start.• Take the image and verify the result, then adjustthe ISO, the shutter speed or both if necessary. - If the image is dark, you may need to raise theISO.
- If the image is dark and the aurora is movingyou may need to both raise the ISO (2000 –3000) and set a faster shutter speed (2-3 second).
- If the image is too bright and the aurora iscalm, set a faster shutter speed.

Narvik has a very strong war history, and the War Museumportrays a dramatic history about the Battle of Narvik duringthe Second World War. In the center of Narvik, you will findthe War Museum. The exhibitions portraying the dramaticevents through pictures and plates, and in subjects like uniforms, weapons and medals, give a very good insight of the situationthat Narvik and Northern Norway experienced from 9th ofApril 1940 to 8th of May 1945.Other elements are also looked upon, including the prison campin the little village Beisfjord, 10 km from Narvik. The prisoncamp evolved to become the worst of all concentration campson Norwegian ground during the war. Because of randommurder, mass murder, disease and malnutrion, 748 Yugoslavslost their lives in this camp.
