Because Stone artisans and the art of stone cutting have become increasingly rare and costly, decorative stonework is often overlooked as a potential design element.

ArcusStone can now provide architects and designers with a lightweight, cost effective alternative when specifying stone. By combining ArcusStone field-applied decorative limestone coatings with carvings and manufactured products, a specifier can create a unified look for new construction or remodeling projects.

A blend of old world and modern techniques allows skilled ArcusStone Applicators and Licensed Manufacturers to create beautiful stone installations and limestone plaster finishes in a variety of natural colors and textures.

The basic technology for the ArcusStone products was developed in Europe in the early 1960s primarily for restoring historic stone structures. In 1988 this basic technology was adapted by ArcusStone to comply with American construction requirements for increased durability and strength. This was accomplished through the use of a unique blend of natural minerals, special bonding agents and proprietary ingredients, combined with Portland cement for additional strength.

ArcusStone Coatings can be applied over many types of interior and exterior substrates, creating a stunning and very natural appearing cut stone or authentic antique plaster surface.

ArcusStone products have been specified for residential and commercial projects both in the U.S. and internationally.

ArcusPlaster™, like ArcusStone, is a unique blend of natural minerals, special bonding agents, proprietary ingredients, with Portland cement as the base element for increased strength.

The minerals and exposed aggregates create a richer variation in color and texture than standard cement plaster finishes. It is available in a number of textures and colors and can give a weathered look to any new structure. Typically, it is used as the third (finish) coat in a three-coat cement plaster application or applied directly on painted or unpainted gypsum board for interiors.

ArcusPlaster can be applied by spray or trowel. After applying, the wet material is hand-tooled by trained Applicators to produce a variety of tones and textures. Depending on weather conditions, the material hardens to the touch in 3 to 6 hours.

Since the color of ArcusPlaster is integral to the material, chips and gouges do not need to be repaired. However, repairs can be made by applying a new finish coat on top of the original application. A clear sealer to improve resistance to oil, graffiti or other environmental damage may be used if desired.

The weight of the plaster (finish coat) material is approximately 1 pound per square foot in a 1/8” to 1/4” thick application. The material is exceptionally durable and superior in strength to standard cement.

ArcusStonecoat™

Substrates: ArcusStone can be applied at the job site over almost any stable substrate. Typical substrate materials include: gypsum board (painted or unpainted), concrete, brick or concrete masonry, tile, brown coat, and foam.

Carvings: can be produced in three-dimensional form such as low relief, high relief, and free standing sculptures.

A variety of natural colors and textures, including the patina of age and weathering, can be achieved for interior or exterior finishes on floors, walls, arches, ceilings, countertops, fireplaces, etc.

Field applied ArcusStonecoat allows infinite design flexibility and can be used with cast stone products, floor tiles or coated foam to create an authentic representation of three-dimensional cut stone surfaces.

Vertical Application Horizontal Application

Application

ArcusStonecoat™ is applied by trowel or spray to an approximate thickness of 3/8-inch. After application, the wet material is hand-worked by our trained Applicators to resemble quarried limestone, sandstone, or other types of stone. Depending on ambient conditions, the material hardens to the touch in 3 to 6 hours. Joint lines are then grouted, and a sealer is applied if specified.

The coating weighs approximately 3 pounds per square foot in a 3/8” thick application. The advantage of being lightweight reduces the requirement and cost for structural reinforcement associated with natural stone.

It is suitable for wet or dry areas and can be used on surfaces that meet grade, such as an exposed foundation wall.

ArcusStonecoat™ can be applied directly over new or old concrete to produce a variety of beautiful cut stone or flagstone surfaces. Its thermal properties make it an excellent choice for pool decks, pool coping, or walkways. In lighter colors, it remains cooler to the touch than concrete or brick surfaces in hot climates.

Generally speaking, it does not require additional finishing. However, a clear sealer is strongly recommended on floors and walls in heavy use areas. An anti-graffiti coating may also be applied if needed.

The color of ArcusStonecoat™ is integral to the material. Chips and gouges, therefore, do not necessarily need to be repaired. If repair is desired, however, new ArcusStonecoat™ may be applied over the existing finish.

Customization

Imagination is the key to customization. Stone products can be manufactured (cast or coated) to reproduce the natural appearance of installed, cut quarried stone or the materials can be field-applied at the job site. In most cases, a combination of manufactured and field-applied stone, created from the same ArcusStone mix, can be utilized to create a uniform finished design.

Colors and Textures

The selection of colors and textures is based on the natural colors and textures found in Limestone, Sandstone, and other stone products. As with any natural material, some variation in color is to be expected. Textures are created by the Applicator and/or Licensed Manufacturer. Custom colors and textures are available and samples are provided upon request.

Applications: Many different applications of carvings are possible, from fully three dimensional objects to bas relief carvings on top of, or incised into, a flat surface. ArcusStone carvings are typically used in conjunction with other field applied ArcusStonecoat and ArcusPlaster applications. They can also be applied over factory cast elements such as fireplace mantels or columns. Factory cast carvings are typically part of a larger precast assembly that is later installed in the field.

Design Options: There is virtually an unlimited scope of possible design options when considering ArcusStone carvings. Family crests, photographs, wine labels, logos and signs, and many other items have been used as design inspiration. Once the artist develops the carving in sketch form, full size drawings are produced for approval and then used as guides for the actual carving.

Execution: Due to the cure rate of the ArcusStone carving mix, the sculptor has to work relatively fast, translating a two dimensional design drawing into a three dimensional carving

Exact reproduction of design drawings is therefore not feasible. On the other hand, the improvisation inherent in this process gives a true uniqueness and hand crafted character to the finished work.

ArcusStonecoat can be applied over various foam shapes that have a fiberglass mesh reinforced base coat. The ArcusStone coating can then be finished to the desired texture by the Applicator or Manufacturer.

Coated Foam shapes are ideal for large scale decorative elements where the weight of solid cast stone would be prohibitive. They are lightweight, easy to install and can be finished to complement the field-applied products.

Installation: the shapes are attached to the substrate using foam-compatible adhesive. As a safety feature, a mechanical fastener may also be employed for some larger elements. Check local building codes for foam installations around fireplace openings.

Tiles and Mosaics

ArcusStone Tiles and Mosaics combine the finish and durability of cut stone with the advantages of ceramic tile. Whereas large stone tiles are heavy and require a substantial substrate or mortar bed, ArcusStone Tiles are approximately ½” thick and can be produced in sizes up to 36”. Installation is similar to methods used for ceramic tile. They are suitable for use on floors, walls or ceilings and can be produced in many custom colors and finishes. As with any natural stone flooring, a sealer is recommended after installation.

Cast Stone

ArcusStone cast products are second to none in natural appearance, color, and texture. Cast ArcusStone is produced by using the same limestone mix used in the stone finishes. Specially prepared molds are used so that each piece can be hand-finished. An extensive range of decorative products is available for use on interior or exterior applications and made to coordinate with field-applied ArcusStonecoat™ or ArcusPlaster™ decorative coatings.

ArcusStone cast products offer a cost effective alternative to using more expensive, quarried, hand-carved stone without compromising the quality and appearance of the finished installation. Additionally, the cost of structural reinforcement required to support the weight of quarried stone is eliminated.

Unlike precast concrete, the cast limestone will develop a patina with age.
