ANNUAL MEETING AND ELECTION OF CLUBBOARD

The Shakespeare Gild would like to thank all who helped with the Soda Booth at this year’s Arden

Fair. Thanks to the good weather, loads of soda and water were enjoyed by everyone.

Our new officers were elected at our September Annual Meeting. Our co-Gildmistresses will be Mary

Catherine Kelley and Linda Kimmelman, with Tanya Lazar as assistant Gildmistress. Claire Ennis

will continue as secretary and Elaine Hickey as Club Liaison. Valerie Hutchinson-Porreca will take

over as business manager.

The Play Selection committee is now considering possibilities for our Summer 2017 production. The

announcement of the decision will be made at our October meeting.

Gild meetings are held the first Wednesday of the month at 7:30 PM in the Bratten Room of the Gild

Hall. Come join us on October 5 and enjoy good refreshments and spirited conversation!

Drummer’s Circle

The Arden Drummer’s Circle, sponsored by the Concert Gild, meets every third Sunday of each month

at 1 PM (generally running about 2 hours or so). Beginners and professionals alike are invited to join

with us. We often play some common rhythms and then we improvise. Bring a drum or two, and/or

percussion instruments. In fair weather, we meet outdoors of the Gild Hall, but in cold or rainy weather

we move into the Lower Gild Hall. We also sometimes have one or two evening events during the year

that often take the place of the monthly event.

New Books in the Arden Library

Booklist starred (December 1, 2015 (Vol. 112, No. 7))

Grades 7-10. In the 1930s, Alfred Blalock became famous after he and his research assistant, Vivien

Thomas, determined the cause of life-threatening circulatory shock and found an effective treatment. In

1941, Blalock accepted a position as the head of surgery and laboratories at Johns Hopkins, where

Thomas joined him. Pediatric cardiologist Dr. Helen Taussig sought out Blalock with a plan for

surgically correcting the congenital malformation of the heart resulting in “blue baby syndrome.”

Surgery on infant hearts was risky. Creating his own tools and conducting a series of surgical procedures

on canine hearts, Thomas induced a similar level of oxygen deprivation in the dogs and, by correcting the

abnormality, reversed their condition. With Thomas at his side, Blalock performed the first successful

surgery correcting the syndrome. Thoroughly researched, well organized, and illustrated effectively with

photos and documents, the narrative lays out information in a clear, accessible way. Murphy makes a

good story great by dealing head-on with discomforting subjects, such as the controversy surrounding

medical experimentation on animals and, most notably, the day-to-day discrimination faced by Thomas,

an African American who initially received little recognition for his contributions to medicine. Murphy

assembles a complicated set of facts, strips away the inessentials, and tells a memorable, moving story.

Booklist starred (September 1, 2012 (Vol. 109, No. 1))

In a poor, midcentury Italian neighborhood, two girls, Elena and Lila, exhibit remarkable intelligence early in

school, at a time when money is scarce and education a privilege, especially for girls. Only Elena is allowed

to continue in school, and she devotes herself to her studies, while Lila redirects her own talent toward her

family’s business. The girls use each other, sometimes as crutches, sometimes as inspiration, but as they

approach adolescence, their friendship is challenged by their changing bodies and attitudes toward the world.

Elena increasingly turns toward education as a means of escaping, while Lila looks to her burgeoning beauty

as a means of altering the violence and bitterness that threaten their neighborhood. The first book in a

prospective trilogy, My Brilliant Friend is a compelling and moving coming-of-age story set in an

impoverished neighborhood struggling to come into its own in a rapidly shrinking world. Celebrated Italian

author Ferrante’s unflinching and insightful prose, which was rancorous in her novel Days of Abandonment

(2010), is captivating and hopeful here and will have readers eagerly awaiting the next installment. If

comparison is to be found, it may be in Sara Gruen’s Water for Elephants (2006) or fellow Italian Silvia

Avallone’s Swimming to Elba (2012).

Kirkus Reviews starred (July 1, 2016)

A fitting (supposedly) final mission for one of fiction’s greatest spies. A bomb explodes in the Marais district

of Paris, a region known for its large Jewish population. One of the victims had a personal connection to

Gabriel Allon, the man poised to become the next chief of Israel’s intelligence service, and that’s why the

legendary assassin and spy joins the hunt for a terrorist mastermind known only as Saladin. Allon has been

trying to escape his past since he first appeared in The Kill Artist (2000), so it’s no surprise that Silva must

provide a lure if he’s going to get his hero back into the field for one last mission. But the 16th installment in

this series is marked by a subtle shift in emphasis. Allon remains as compelling as ever, but Silva is clearly

preparing readers for a world in which his hero takes a supporting role. Two members of Allon’s team—

Mikhail Abramov and Dina Sarid—seem poised to play a larger part in future novels. But it’s Allon’s newest

recruit who takes center stage here. Dr. Natalie Mizrahi is a French-born Israeli. As Leila Hadawi, the

daughter of Palestinian refugees, Natalie becomes part of the terrorist network ruled by Saladin. This is not

the first time agents have gone undercover in one of Silva’s novels, but Natalie’s experience is the most

harrowing. A Jew hiding in the heart of the so-called caliphate, she knows that a single misstep will result in

her own horrific death. More than that, she knows that failure to complete her mission will mean hundreds—

if not thousands—more deaths. Before he became a novelist, Silva was a journalist stationed in the Middle East. His Gabriel Allon

novels have tracked—and, in some cases, anticipated—the rise of the Islamic State group. In his foreword, he notes that he began

writing this story before the Paris attacks of 2015. A dark thriller for difficult times.

Steady Holiday is Dre Babinski. Under the Influence is her coming out party, featuring Josh Adams

(Jenny Lewis) and produced by Gus Seyffert (The Black Keys, Beck).

Ben Sollee

Saturday, November 5

Cycling cellist Ben Sollee who has the unusual combination of classic cello chops and soul singing

abandon, returns to Arden in November after 6 years. Like his contemporaries Chris Thile and Abigail

Washburn, Sollee’s music is difficult to pin down. It’s Ben’s quality of narrative and presence on stage

that unifies his musical influences.

The Arden Poetry Gild meets on the second Tuesday of each month in the Library at the Gild Hall.

A short business meeting at 7:30 PM is followed by poetry readings and discussions on literature

and poetry. We encourage young writers/ poets and everyone to attend! Bring original writings;

bring prose or poems for sharing or just bring yourself. Come early… cookies are warm upon arrival

and go quickly. Bring your own refreshments.

ARDENSINGERS GILD

DINNER GILD The Dinner Gild begins another great season on October 1. The Northwoods welcome everyone back as they

serve their famous Pork “Lion,” with rice pilaf, fresh green beans, and apple & butternut bisque.

Each week the specific menus will be on the Arden Club website They will also be posted on Arden Dinner Gild

Facebook page and of course, the recording for the telephone line 302-792-7139 or via e-mail

(adgreservations@gmail.com).

Reservations must be made prior to 6:00 PM the Thursday before the dinner. Tell the reservationist (1) your

name, (2) phone number, (3) who’s coming (member, non-member, child), (4) if you would like the vegetarian

alternative, and (5) if you know in advance if you will taking your dinner home with you. Take-out containers

are sold for $1 each. Our prices remain: Members $11; non-members $13; children $6; leftovers $6.

October 15: Jill Althouse-Wood and friends – Chicken Shawarma with jasmine rice and peas, lettuce, tomato,

and cucumber salad, hummus, pita, and a dessert to be determined. Vegetarian option is eggplant shawarma.

October 22: Annie Gutsche and family - Menu to be determined.

November 5: Trish and Hope’s famous DAY OF THE DEAD feast.

All vegetarian alternatives will be posted as the time for the dinner approaches.

New Meeting Structure

For this year’s education portion of the Dinner Gild, Chef Bischoff (along with help from Chefs Northwood and

Brocklesby) will be offering lessons on how to prepare elements of a meal and how to keep it fresh when

cooking for a large quantity of people, as well as secrets to portion control and presentation. October’s topic is

making stock from bones. Here is your chance to learn the basics for making turkey soup for after the

holidays and chicken soup for winter’s chill! Samples will be provided. Join us from 7:00 to 8:00 PM on

October 3 for these lessons.

Gilbert & Sullivan Christmas Carol

Rehearsals are now underway for our fall show, “A Gilbert & Sullivan Christmas

Carol.” This humorous adaptation of A Christmas Carol is set to the music of Arthur

Sullivan, but remains faithful to the spirit of the Charles Dickens original.

Performances will be December 10, 16 & 17, 2016 at 8:00 PM and December 10 & 18 at 2:00 PM. Ticket prices are $17 Adult, $14

Senior, $5 Child/Student in advance and $20 Adult, $17 Senior, $7 Child/Student at the door. Stage direction is by Ken Mammarella

businesses whose generous donations of plants and goods made the Plant Booth at the 2016 Arden Fair such a success!

Thanks to Ken Judson and Tom Magee for helping to make our Information Booth so successful at the Arden Fair this year.

We play in the Bratten Room of the Lower Gild Hall the first and third Thursdays of the month from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM. The next

dates are October 5 and 20. The cost is $1 for members and $2 for non-members.
