LANCASTER PRIMARY SCHOOL PARENT INFORMATION BOOKLET

Welcome.

The staff and school community at Lancaster Primary School extend a warm welcome to you and your child as he/she enters primary education at our school. We believe the school will offer your child rewarding and valuable educative experiences. You are entering into a partnership with the school where we have one common interest and focus - the children. Working together, we must attempt to provide the best possible environment for children to grow confidently and realise their full potential.

We are a very caring, dedicated and professional group of staff who work extremely hard to provide every child with a range of educational experiences. During the years, you are with us we will work with you to cater for the academic, social and emotional wellbeing of your child. This is achieved most effectively by working in partnership with each family to reinforce the values and attitudes required to prepare your child for the future.

Every four years our school reviews and devises a School Strategic Plan to set the direction of the school for the next four years. Our primary goal is to provide an excellent education for every student. To do this we evaluate our progress and plan a strategy that is critical to our school’s continued success – improving learning, engagement and wellbeing, and successful transitions and pathways for our children.

The Annual Implementation Plan describes how the key improvement strategies from the School Strategic Plan will be put into operation in each of the four years. The School Strategic Plan emphasises the importance of social skills program at our school which has as its foundations the development of confidence, persistence, organisation, getting along with others and resilience. These aspects support our school values underpin the programs and operations of our school.

Through your School Council and the subcommittees, you can take an active part in the life of the school and ensure that your ideas are considered. I hope that you will become involved in the many and varied activities of the classroom and the school, as it conveys the message that you are interested in your child/ren’s education and shows them that you do play an important part in this partnership. As we are a small school, a contribution in time and effort from each family can have a big impact upon the school.

I hope that this information booklet is able to answer some of the many questions that may arise, and will assist your introduction to Lancaster Primary School. However should you have any queries regarding your child's progress, the teaching program or the administration of the school, please do not hesitate to contact the class teacher or myself to discuss the matter. It is important that you feel comfortable as a partner in your child's education.

We look forward to a long and successful partnership with you in preparing your child for further education and beyond.

At Lancaster we provide an authentic approach to teaching and learning that will enable students to….DEVELOP A SENSE OF THEMSELVES AS LEARNERSEnjoy their own learning; make and act on responsible decisions about their own learning and its outcomes; develop interests and activities which can be carried on beyond school and gain satisfaction and confidence from their developing abilities.

LEARN IN A VARIETY OF WAYSGather and analyse evidence and form generalisations; analyse and evaluate arguments; questions and form values, ideas and opinions; learn through both personal experience and instruction; experience the usefulness and limitations of various modes of enquiry; learn in situations and settings both inside and outside the school and use a variety of media for understanding and communicating ideas and information.

RELATE LEARNING TO ACTIONExperience the interface between theory and practice; relate what they learn at school to what they do and learn outside school; develop strategies for solving problems and cooperate with others in achieving socially desirable outcomes.

CurriculumWe offer a comprehensive and inclusive curriculum for all students at our school and encourage parents to be partners in this process.Visits to the school by people who can improve and assist in Inquiry Units are encouraged and classes often move out into the community to learn more of the world about them.

MATHEMATICS in the early years involves the manipulation of concrete materials which provides the foundation upon which children can actively build ideas. At all levels teachers draw on students knowledge of the world to ensure that abstract ideas are linked to something familiar. The Maths domain covers Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability.

ENGLISH includes reading, writing, speaking and listening. Children are engaged in learning literacy skills and strategies by reading, writing, speaking and listening everyday at school. We base our Literacy lessons on The Multi-sensory Structured Language Program

HUMANITIES provide opportunities for students to develop a knowledge and understanding of their own society and environment; and how they differ from others. It also lays the foundation for understanding how people relate to each other and their environment. Specific emphasis is placed on incorporating Koorie Education and heritage, Civics and Citizenship and Studies of Asia into an integrated approach to planning and delivering curriculum

Victorian Curriculum F-10 StructureThe Victorian Curriculum provides a single curriculum for levels F-10. It incorporates the Victorian Curriculum as it is progressively developed within a framework that reflects particular Victorian priorities and approaches to teaching and learning. (F is the abbreviation for ‘Foundation’ which is now the common term agreed to by all States and Territories to refer to the first level of school for curriculum design purposes).

The Victorian Curriculum website provides the F-10 curriculum for Victorian government and Catholic schools and is available to all independent schools as a model and resource for the effective implementation of the Curriculum. For curriculum planning, teaching and assessment resources, curriculum consultation information, and professional learning opportunities, please see the Victorian Curriculum Resources and Support material on the VCAA website.

ASSISTING YOUR CHILD AT HOMEFrom the time when your child was a tiny baby you have been developing a loving and caring relationship. It is most important that this loving and caring continues and is extended into an interest and appreciation of your child's schooling.

The most important thing that you can do to assist your child is to take an interest in all that they do.

Make the effort to spend some time with your child/children each night talking with them, discussing their interests, reading to them, telling them stories, hearing them read and so on. Both Mum and Dad should be involved in this whenever possible.

Always give your child a reason for your answers and / or decisions, and endeavour to have him or her give a reason for theirs. In developing the powers of decision making and reasoning your child becomes receptive to the various facets of his education both within and outside the school.

Language is of utmost importance in developing thinking processes, so please talk with your child, point out things to him or her and have them tell you about things.

If your child needs help with a particular subject or topic and you are not sure what the problem is, please discuss the matter with your child's class teacher so that everyone is aware of both the problem and possible solutions.

At all times, be reasonable with your requests and consistent in your actions so that your child is not confused by conflicting demands.

It should be remembered that the points made are based on sound educational principles and will help your child/ren achieve their potential.

Information sessions are conducted at the end of the child’s pre-school year to prepare parents and child(ren) for this first important transition to the child’s first year at school.

It gives parents/guardians, teachers and nurses an opportunity to work together for the well being and educational progress of children. In order to carry out a health assessment, the nurses need to know information that only parents or guardians have about their child.Prior to the school nurse's visit parents will receive a School Entrant Health Questionnaire which will assist them to provide this information.
