Noosa Waters – What a great place to live! This was the promotional marketing phrase for Noosa Waters but is also the heartfelt mantra of all who have had the good fortune to live in this beautiful place ever since!

But Noosa Waters is not just about the physical place, it has its’ own story to tell and boasts an active, dynamic community and Residents Association which offers many opportunities to meet new friends and neighbours at organized NW social events or by joining activities from diverse range featured on Noosa Waters own website www.noosawaters.org.One such event was the 2010 Kayak Challenge shown above. Noosa Waters Enters a New Era…. By Digging Up The Past - What Lies Beneath?

Residents may have wondered what was happening when they saw the digger and activity by the fountain. Was there perhaps a drainage problem, or had buried treasure been found? It had! Buried for ten years to the very day – June 6th, Queensland’s birthday – was the historic Q150 Noosa Waters time capsule. the options was prepared by a landscape architect and distributed to NWRA members for comment. The replies have been collated. The consensus was colourful feature trees for the roundabouts, shrubs for the understorey. There was a clear message not to use Callistemon Little John because of its already prolific use throughout the estate. For the chicane, the tree choice was Queensland Kauri with its narrow and high canopy so as not to interrupt the view over the park.Update: Since this last meeting with Council, we have been advised that there has been an increase in the budget for roadside gardens and we are hopeful of seeing an improvement. We were also told that funding for the palm reduction proposal was not approved by the Councillors, but some minor reduction may still take place, using the regular budget.

NWRA Submission to Draft Noosa Town PlanThe Association made a submission on the Draft Town Plan that was recently out for consultation. We supported the proposal to regulate short term rentals so that residents whose amenity is being affected have access to a complaints system. We did not support the proposal for the Police to deal with noise complaints because they prioritise their workload and noise complaints will often not receive attention when they should. We also raised the problem that external lighting with LED globes can become a nuisance if not installed with consideration for neighbourhood amenity. We have noted a rising number of complaints involving this issue and as this type of light becomes more common, problems will only worsen if not dealt with soon.NB If you have outdoor LED lighting on your property please be considerate of your neighbours and ensure that the light is hooded so that the lighting is not visible beyond your property. These lights are exceptionally bright for long distances and can severely affect the amenity of your neighbours.

Proposed Updated Noosa Waters Informational BookletThe Association will soon release an information booklet aimed at new member recruitment. It contains a brief overview of Noosa Waters Estate and the Association, answers to some frequently asked questions, some useful contact information and urging them to become a member. It is very important that we grow our membership to remain influential on matters that affect members’ amenity. This will be distributed to all new arrivals and a digital copy will be available on our website.

Ideas Invited for New Noosa Waters ProjectsThe Association is looking for small Noosa Waters projects that would benefit our general community. If you have an idea for consideration, we would like to hear about it.

James TaylorPresident NWRA

The Noosa Waters Residents Association (NWRA) has been very busy since our last newsletter.

The Christmas Music in the Park event organised by Paul McDonald and his volunteers was exceptionally well attended this year. The number of people attending was more than planned for and Paul is going to add a social group on our website so volunteers can join in to help with the running of this year's event. If you have experience in event activities and in particular amplification (modest) of music, Paul would like to hear from you.

Sports & Social Group

Kerry Boulton and the Sports and Social sub-committee have done a great job coordinating the Christmas lights judging and the very popular Christmas flotilla. The Meet ‘n Greet social event, where residents come to meet their neighbours, is also very popular and was well attended.

The committee also organised a social sausage sizzle to celebrate the opening of the Q150 time capsule, buried on Queensland Day, 2009. There were cheers all round when the contents were found to be intact! Thanks to everyone who helped and supported these events.

Good News About Speed Reduction in the CanalSix months ago we asked Maritime Safety Qld to schedule more patrols by water police and fisheries to deter speeding inside Noosa waters. Residents report that there was a noticeable improvement in compliance, which was very pleasing.

Landscaping MattersIn January we received a lot of feedback from members on a Council proposal to reduce the number of palms because the upkeep was consuming too much of the budget. Just fewer than 80% supported a sensible reduction in palm numbers, but almost all expressed some concern about the deterioration of the roadside gardens. The deterioration of the roadside landscaping was the top of the agenda item at the Committee’s scheduled half-yearly meeting with the Council. The key points coming out of this meeting were that the service standard for these gardens requires care and attention either monthly or quarterly, depending on location. The service currently being delivered is well below what is required and that may account for the plant loss and otherwise poor condition. Also, water needs to be turned on during dry periods because the gardens are surrounded by concrete and bitumen with inadequate access to a natural water source.Noosa Council is proposing to upgrade two of the roundabouts and the chicane along Shorehaven Drive. The Constitution for our Association was last reviewed 20 years ago, but now needs updating because we are in a very different era with many different challenges and opportunities. We have formed a working group who are working on bringing the Constitution up to date and to be considered at our AGM.An important change that we will be asking members to consider, is to amend the Constitution to broaden the membership to include a new, Social (non-voting) membership initiative, to enable those who do not currently reside in Noosa Waters, to participate in our social events officially and inclusively while also contributing financially. It is proposed that this Social membership would involve a nominal membership fee to contribute to the operational and administrational costs to the Association. This Social membership would be a requirement for non-residents to be able to actively participate in future Noosa Waters events and activities and that would operate under defined terms and conditions, offering best security and protections for all.It is envisaged that this Social membership would bring about a number of benefits to NWRA members, associated friends and supporters including:• Clarity for organisers of any future approved NW events or

activities re insurance protection and accountability.• Capacity to expand the range and scope of approved NW

community events and activities.• Provision of a welcoming, inclusive link for non-resident

supporters of the Assn and its events and activities, - including former residents, many of whom have played a significant role in the development of multiple aspects of our Noosa Waters lifestyle and who may wish to maintain their involvement in our activities.

• Ability for the Association to retain and benefit from the skills, knowledge, experience and friendships that could otherwise be lost when active former members move from the Estate for whatever reason.

• Potential for a broader community membership base, which could help to ensure the success, existence and creative expansion of current and potential new Noosa Waters Social Group activities or events.

• Pro-active connection of Noosa Waters to the wider local community contributing to the community social capital.

WaterwatchWaterwatch Revetment Wall AlertEach year the Association assists Noosa Council to inspect the revetment walls looking for the risk of subsidence due to the seabed slumping. Over 99% of the inspections take place from a boat on the water but, in a few instances there are obstructions and the Council officer may walk along a jetty to gain a better view. As all Noosa Waters jetties are on Crown land, they are authorised to do this. The annual inspection for 2019, was completed recently. The areas that have had rock armour installed previously to prevent further subsidence are all satisfactory. A further 28 properties that were not treated previously, are starting to show signs of subsidence. These will be closely monitored by the Council and will eventually need remediation.During the inspections, it was noted that several properties have revetment wall panels that have fractured (cracked) through the entire thickness of the wall. All waterfront owners are urged to inspect the revetment walls on their waterfront for signs of cracking. If you do find cracks there are some preventative measures that you can take to prevent collapse like stainless steel bracing across the damaged sections. If no action is taken and a collapse occurs, the repair bill will be very high and is usually not covered by home insurance. The walls are on the homeowners land and it is the owner’s responsibility to repair any damage. Please note: this is a different situation to the past revetment wall issue where the problem was that the canal bed (Crown Land) was slumping. Cont’d

Lock and WeirThe lock and associated infrastructure is now 25 years old and shows signs that parts will need replacing soon. The salinity pump that replenishes canal had an expensive rebuild last year. The fencing around the lock area needs major refurbishment this year, the lock gates will need refurbishing or replacing soon. Noosa Council has advised that the lock levy will be rising to pay for this extraordinary work. We have advised that residents would prefer this increase smoothed out over several years rather than levies fluctuating from one year to the next.

FountainWe often receive inquiries about the water fountain and its operating times. The water fountain only operates during daylight hours. Once every four weeks Council turns it off for seven days. The area then dries out and kills any algae in the fountain obviating the need to use harsh chemicals that would eventually end up in the canal. The water flow in the fountain is recirculated from the canal and it operates purely for aesthetic reasons. Each night a salinity pump replenishes the water in the canal with water from Noosa River. The canal water is replaced about every five weeks.

Meet & Greet Event

This year’s Meet and Greet was a resounding success and a lovely night with lots of new people who now call Noosa Waters home, as well as many established residents attending to welcome our new residents. We were lucky with the weather as the storm threatening on the horizon held off until the end and didn’t spoil our fun.

Thanks so much to all the members of the Noosa Waters Sports and Social Group for their hard work to put this event together - and again for the Q150 time capsule opening sausage sizzle. Thank you to the wonderful gentlemen on the BBQ for their cheery support and cooking expertise. The Meet & Greet event was catered by Bailey Kitchen and everyone enjoyed their delicious goodies. Suzie Smead was the lucky winner of the bottle of Moet and other winners were equally delighted with their prizes. A special thank you goes to Bec Fraser, who donated some lucky door prizes of lovely products and services from Rodan & Fields and Sensibly Nourished.

Noosa Waters Residents Association — Out and About

Bloke’s Lunch

Blokes Lunch celebrated 10 years with their monthly lunch at the Boathouse Restaurant on June 28th. Started by Barry Maloney (dec’d) as part of the Noosa Waters Sports and Social Group in 2009, this popular activity has morphed over the years, and as male residents in Noosa Waters increasingly invited guests to our lunches, the demographic broadened. With the emphasis on socialising over a meal with drinks, the informal program has remained very popular. Each lunch regularly attracts 40 - 50 blokes with 48 present in June. While the focus

on venues has narrowed in recent years to supporting local venues, in the early days Barry organised boat trips to Boreen Point to lunch at the Apollonian Hotel, Orange Pizza on Sunrise and the Cooroy Hotel, to name a few. Barry’s wife Dorothy attended our June lunch and shared memories of those times with Barry. Dorothy was part of the initial team of

women who started Thursday Girls Lunch around the same time. She shared her conversation with Barry and he realised the fun times ahead for the ‘girls‘. He took Dorothy’s comment - ‘ Well you organise something for the blokes!’ to heart and both lunches are still going 10 years on!Dorothy received a bouquet of flowers on behalf of the blokes as special thanks for her continued support. If you are interested in attending Blokes Lunch please contact David Brown on - [email protected]

Thursday Girls LtdThe Thursday Girls meet on the last Thursday of the month for either Lunch in a local restaurant or an afternoon event in a private home to raise funds for an Educational Support Progamme in our Noosa Shire State Schools.Meet new people whilst providing children from disadvantaged backgrounds with the financial opportunity to be able to participate with their classmates in educationally approved school activities which would normally be beyond the means of their families.

This year has seen some great rides within our group. Some of our riders have passed the 7000 Km mark, incredible considering the age group - four riders over 70 and six over 64!Rides are generally 40-75 km per session, with a good chinwag for coffee at our sponsors, Gibsons, after the ride.

We look forward to a few more new faces this year, so if you are considering a ride, come along and join us. There is certainly no pressure to compete!Peter Sheerin, Cycling Coordinator. 0409 040 778

NWRA Neighbourhood Watch & Water WatchNew Web PagesWith the help of Webmaster Howard, we have made some cool enhancements to the two Neighbourhood Watch pages on the Residents Association website.Firstly, we can now include

two photos in incident reports. So, if you report an incident to Neighbourhood Watch you can include photos of graffiti, vandalism, suspicious vehicles etc. Secondly, the general NW web page has been divided into two sections. The left column continues to display static general info about NW, but the new column on the right provides links to PDF documents. If you go to this page you can click on the blue document link and an informative PDF will be downloaded. If there is something worth sharing please send it to us so we can post it on the web page.

Home SecurityIf you are contemplating beefing up your domestic security, it’s worth considering a surveillance system. There are numerous systems available from local electronics retailers and the quality and affordability has improved significantly in recent times. The challenge is deciding the best fit for your circumstances. Here are some things to consider:• Get the highest video resolution you can afford because it’s no

good if you can’t see the detail. The minimum should be HD (high definition) also referred to as 1080p. Beware of cheaper systems marketed as “HD” but in reality are not.

• Some domestic systems now offer 4K Ultra high definition which has four times the resolution of HD and produces video with great clarity.

• One brand to consider, recommended by Choice and Tech Life Australia magazine, is Netgear’s Arlo Pro 2 HD and Arlo 4K Ultra HD. Both packages include a base station with a choice of two or more cameras (which can be added later). Cameras are completely wireless and weather proof with rechargeable batteries, which means they can be mounted anywhere as long as they are in range of your Wi-Fi. Batteries claimed to last 3 to 6 months between charges. A big plus is the inclusion of a rolling 7 days’ worth of cloud storage!

There are numerous other smart devices such as video door bells which connect to your smart phone providing security enhancement for a reasonable price.

Complex Security continues to provide an essential component of our efforts to minimise crime in our estate with their regular patrols.

Noosa Outrigger Canoe Club (NOCC)Noosa Outrigger crews will represent Australia Three women’s crews from the Noosa Outrigger Canoe Club are currently training hard for the International Va’a Federation World Distance Championships, being held in Mooloolaba from 9 -16 August 2019. With only one Australian crew per age division qualifying for the World Distance Championships, the Noosa Club has done extremely well to have the three women’s crews as the fastest qualifiers in the Nation in their respective divisions, namely Senior Master Women (50+), Golden Master Women (60+) and Platinum Master Women (70+). The Noosa Outrigger Canoe Club also has two Master Women (40+), Flea White (a Noosa Waters resident) and Paz Hegarty, who have been selected in a pool of 10 paddlers from throughout Australia from which their crew and reserves are chosen, in this highly competitive age division.
