✤ What Does a Boundary Look Like?

Proverbs 4:20-27 NIV

20 My son, pay attention to what I say;    turn your ear to my words.

21 Do not let them out of your sight,    keep them within your heart;

22 for they are life to those who find them    and health to one’s whole body.

23 Above all else, guard your heart,

for everything you do flows from it.24

Keep your mouth free of perversity;    keep corrupt talk far from your lips.

25 Let your eyes look straight ahead;    fix your gaze directly before you.

26 Give careful thought to the[a] paths for your

feet    and be steadfast in all your ways.

27 Do not turn to the right or the left;

    keep your foot from evil.

✤ In the physical world, boundaries are easy to see. ✤ Fences, signs, walls, moats with alligators, manicured lawns, or hedges are all

physical boundaries. In their differing appearances, they give the same message: THIS IS WHERE MY PROPERTY BEGINS.

✤ The owner of the property is legally responsible for what happens on his or her property. Non-owners are not responsible for the property.

✤ Physical boundaries mark a visible property line that someone holds the deed to. You can go to the county courthouse and find out exactly where those boundaries of responsibility are and whom to call if you have business there.

✤ In the spiritual world, boundaries are just as real, but often harder to see. In reality, these boundaries define your soul, and they help you to guard it and maintain it

Proverbs 4:20-27 NIV

Are you Ready for Spiritual Promotion? Boundaries - When to say Yes - How to say No ✤ Read Ephesians 4:14–15; 2 Timothy 2:15; Psalm 119:33

✤ What is the benefit to setting strong boundaries? Strong, Biblical boundaries keep us from becoming a party to things that do not please God. At the same time, allowing the misery that follows disobedience to fall squarely upon the one who has rebelled.

One way to set spiritual boundaries regarding doctrine is to be careful of the sources from which we seek truth. We want to stay away from human cunning and craftiness and focus instead on the Word of God (Ephesians 4:14–15; 2 Timothy 2:15; Psalm 119:33).

We need to evaluate the teachings we hear and be sure that we, ourselves, are studying Scripture.

God wants us to rely on the Holy Spirit (John 14:16–17, 26; 16:13–15) as well as teachers who are mature and orthodox in their offerings (Ephesians 4:11–12).

Ephesians 4:14-15 AMP14 So that we are no longer children

[spiritually immature], tossed back and forth [like ships on a stormy sea] and

carried about by every wind of [shifting] doctrine, by the cunning and trickery of

[unscrupulous] men, by the deceitful scheming of people ready to do anything

[for personal profit].

15 But speaking the truth in love [in all things—both our speech and our lives

expressing His truth], let us grow up in all things into Him [following His example]

who is the Head—Christ.

2 Timothy 2:15 AMP

15 Study and do your best to present yourself to God approved, a workman

[tested by trial] who has no reason to be ashamed, accurately handling and skillfully

teaching the word of truth.

Psalm 119:33Teach me, O Lord, the way of Your statutes,And I will [steadfastly] observe it to the end.

Learn how to Guard: Your Doctrine

✤ We must understand the doctrines of the Bible and be committed to them. First Timothy 4:7 says, "Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness."

✤ One way to set spiritual boundaries regarding doctrine is to be careful of the sources from which we seek truth. ✤ We want to stay away from human cunning and craftiness and focus instead on the Word of God (Ephesians 4:14–15; 2

Timothy 2:15; Psalm 119:33)

✤ We need to evaluate the teachings we hear and be sure that we, ourselves, are studying Scripture. God wants us to rely on the Holy Spirit (John 14:16–17, 26; 16:13–15)

✤ We need teachers who are mature and orthodox in their offerings (Ephesians 4:11–12) ✤ Orthodox - accepted as true or correct by most people who are learned in a particular field

✤ Nothing that is fly by night✤ Nothing that is referred to as the Kingdom but you can’t find written down anywhere

Ephesians 4:11-13; 14-15 AMP11 And [His gifts to the church were varied and] He

Himself appointed some as apostles [special messengers, representatives], some as prophets [who

speak a new message from God to the people], some as evangelists [who spread the good news of salvation], and some as pastors and teachers [to shepherd and

guide and instruct], 12 [and He did this] to fully equip and perfect the saints (God’s people) for works of

service, to build up the body of Christ [the church]; 13 until we all reach oneness in the faith and in the

knowledge of the Son of God, [growing spiritually] to become a mature believer, reaching to the measure of

the fullness of Christ [manifesting His spiritual completeness and exercising our spiritual gifts in

unity].

14 So that we are no longer children [spiritually immature], tossed back and forth [like ships on a stormy sea] and carried about by every wind of

[shifting] doctrine, by the cunning and trickery of [unscrupulous] men, by the deceitful scheming of people ready to do anything [for personal profit].

Learn how to Guard: Your Relationships

We become like those we spend time with….

So we should be intentional about the company that we keep!!!

Read Proverbs 13:20; 22:24; 27:6, 17; 1 Corinthians 15:33; 2 Corinthians 6:14

Invest in relationships that spur you on to spiritual maturity.

Proverbs 13:20 TLB20 Be with wise men and become wise. Be with

evil men and become evil.

Learn how to Guard: Your Conduct

We should understand God's call for righteous living and set clear and solid boundaries for ourselves to help us obey God’s commands (1 Corinthians 6:9–11; 2 Timothy 2:22; Romans 13:14).

Make a conscious decision to avoid places, people, events, and things that will draw you away from God (Psalm 101:3; Proverbs 4:14–15; Joshua 24:15; Matthew 5:27–30; 2 Timothy 2:22; James 1:13–17).

1 Corinthians 6:9-11 TLB9-10 Don’t you know that those doing such

things have no share in the Kingdom of God? Don’t fool yourselves. Those who live

immoral lives, who are idol worshipers, adulterers or homosexuals—will have no

share in his Kingdom. Neither will thieves or greedy people, drunkards, slanderers, or robbers. 11 There was a time when some of

you were just like that but now your sins are washed away, and you are set apart for God;

and he has accepted you because of what the Lord Jesus Christ and the Spirit of

our God have done for you.

2 Timothy 2:22 TLB

22 Run from anything that gives you the evil thoughts that young men often have, but

stay close to anything that makes you want to do right. Have faith and love, and enjoy the companionship of those who love the

Lord and have pure hearts.

Romans 13:14 TLB

14 But ask the Lord Jesus Christ to help you live as you should, and don’t make plans to

enjoy evil.

Make a conscious decision to avoid places, people, events, and things that will draw you away from God Read Psalm 101:3; Proverbs 4:14–15; Joshua 24:15; Matthew 5:27–30; 2 Timothy 2:22; James 1:13–17).

Psalm 101:3 3 Help me to refuse the low and vulgar things; help me to abhor all crooked deals of every kind, to have no part in them.

Proverbs 4:14-1514 Don’t do as the wicked do. 15 Avoid their haunts—turn away, go somewhere else,

Joshua 24:1515 But if you are unwilling to obey the Lord, then decide today whom you will obey. Will it be the gods of your ancestors beyond the Euphrates or the gods of the Amorites here in this land? But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.”

Matthew 5:27-3027 “The laws of Moses said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say: Anyone who even looks at a woman with lust in his eye has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 So if your eye—even if it is your best eye![a]—causes you to lust, gouge it out and throw it away. Better for part of you to be destroyed than for all of you to be cast into hell. 30 And if your hand—even your right hand—causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. Better that than find yourself in hell.

2 Timothy 2:2222 Run from anything that gives you the evil thoughts that young men often have, but stay close to anything that makes you want to do right. Have faith and love, and enjoy the companionship of those who love the Lord and have pure hearts.

James 1:13-1713 And remember, when someone wants to do wrong it is never God who is tempting him, for God never wants to do wrong and never tempts anyone else to do it. 14 Temptation is the pull of man’s own evil thoughts and wishes. 15 These evil thoughts lead to evil actions and afterwards to the death penalty from God. 16 So don’t be misled, dear brothers. 17 But whatever is good and perfect comes to us from God, the Creator of all light, and he shines forever without change or shadow.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11 TLB9-10 Don’t you know that those doing such

Learn how to Guard AGAINST Your Idols

As humans, we're always looking to replace God with idols in our lives.

Decide to constantly put God back on the throne of your life and separate yourself from the world and its ways (2 Corinthians 6:17).

2 Corinthians 6:11-17 TLB

11 Oh, my dear Corinthian friends! I have told you all my feelings; I love you with all my heart. 12 Any coldness still between us

is not because of any lack of love on my part but because your love is too small and does not reach out to me and draw me in. 13 I am talking to you now as if you truly were my very own children. Open your hearts to us!

Return our love!

14 Don’t be teamed with those who do not love the Lord, for what do the people of God have in common with the people of sin? How can light live with darkness?

15 And what harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a Christian be a partner with one who doesn’t believe? 16 And what union can there be between

God’s temple and idols? For you are God’s temple, the home of the living God, and

God has said of you, “I will live in them and walk among them, and I will be their God and they shall be my people.” 17 That is

why the Lord has said, “Leave them; separate yourselves from them; don’t touch their filthy things, and I will welcome you 18 and be a Father to you, and you will be

my sons and daughters.”

Boundaries help us also define what is me and not me!!!!

A boundary shows me where I end and someone else begins, leading me to a sense of ownership.

Knowing what I am to own and take responsibility for gives me freedom.

If I know where my yard begins and ends, I am free to do with it what I like.

Taking responsibility for my life opens up many different options.

However, if I do not “own” my life, my choices and options become very limited.

2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold,

the new has come.

1 Corinthians 3:16Don't you know that you yourselves are

God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in your midst?

Boundaries help us also define what we are responsible to and for…

Read Galatians Galatians 6:1-5

We are responsible to others and for ourselves. “Carry each other’s burdens,” says Galatians 6:2, “and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” This verse shows our responsibility “to” one another.

Im responsible to restore (get to a better state)

Please note restore and resolve are not the same thing!

Im responsible to help that person (get to a better state)

Please note Help and handle are not the same thing!

Galatians 6:1-5 NASB

Bear One Another’s Burdens6 Brothers and sisters, even if a person is caught in any wrongdoing, you who are spiritual are to restore such a person in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you are not tempted as well. 2 Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ. 3 For if

anyone thinks that he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. 4 But each one must examine his own work, and then he will have reason for boasting, but [a]to himself alone, and not [b]to another. 5 For

each one will bear his own load.

Galatians 6:1-5 NIV6 Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should

restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. 2 Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. 3 If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves.

4 Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to

someone else, 5 for each one should carry their own load.

Many times, others have “burdens” that are too big to bear. They do not have enough strength, resources, or knowledge to carry the load, and they need help.

Denying ourselves to do for others what they cannot do for themselves is showing the sacrificial love of Christ.

This is what Christ did for us. He did what we could not do for ourselves; he saved us. This is being responsible “to.”

The problem is we keep trying todo for others what they can already do “for” themselves! There is a difference between lazy and unable.

Galatians 6:1-5 NASB

Verse 5 says that “each one should carry his own load.”

Everyone has responsibilities that only he or she can carry.

Some things are “our own load” that we have responsibility for and need to work out.

No one can do certain things for us!

We have to take ownership of certain things in life that are our own “load.”

What does this mean?I can pray with you, but you still need to pray for…..(yourself)I can walk with you, but you still need to try to walk for….(yourself)I can talk with you but at the end of the conversation you still have to decide for….(yourself)

So…. How do we know when to bear it ourselves and when to let them carry it themselves?

Galatians 6:1-5 NASB

Bear One Another’s Burdens6 Brothers and sisters, even if a person is caught in any wrongdoing, you who are spiritual are to restore such a person in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you are not tempted as well. 2 Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ. 3 For if

So…. How do we know when to bear it ourselves and when to let them carry it themselves?

The Greek words for burden and load give us insight into the meaning of these texts.

The Greek word for burden means “excess burdens,” or burdens that are so heavy that they weigh us down.

These burdens are like boulders. They can crush us. We shouldn’t be expected to carry a boulder by ourselves! It would break our backs.

We need help with the boulders—those times of crisis and tragedy in our lives.

In contrast, the Greek word for load means “cargo,” or “the burden of daily toil.”

This word describes the everyday things we all need to do. These loads are like knapsacks. Knapsacks are possible to carry.

We are expected to carry our own. We are expected to deal with our own feelings, attitudes, and behaviors, as well as the responsibilities God has given to each one of us, even though it takes effort.

Listen….I can help you with an existential crisis, I can’t help you “to know” how to feel about yourself, your ex, your outlook on life, and how you should respond. Those are your decision!

Galatians 6:1-5 NASB

So…. How do we know when to bear it ourselves and when to let them carry it themselves?

We get in trouble as believers when

We act as if their “boulders” are daily loads, and refuse help!

OR

We minimize their “daily loads” to boulders that they shouldn’t have to carry.

The results of these two instances are either perpetual pain or irresponsibility.

3 For if

Are you Ready for Spiritual Promotion? Boundaries - When to say Yes - How to say No Boundaries help us also define what to keep in and what to let out!

Read Matthew 7:1-6

Boundaries help us to distinguish our property so that we can take care of it. They help us to “guard our heart with all diligence.”

We need to keep things that will nurture us inside our fences and keep things that will harm us outside.

In short, boundaries help us keep the good in and the bad out. They guard our treasures! So that they are not stolen….

We must learn how to keep what is of great value to those who will accept it In other words…..Learn how to keep the pearls inside, and the dogs & pigs outside.

Matthew 7 NLT

Do Not Judge Others7 “Do not judge others, and you will not be

judged. 2 For you will be treated as you treat others.[a] The standard you use in

judging is the standard by which you will be judged.[b]

3 “And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye[c] when you have a log in your

own? 4 How can you think of saying to your friend,[d] ‘Let me help you get rid of that

speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? 5 Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck

in your friend’s eye.

6 “Don’t waste what is holy on people who are unholy.[e] Don’t throw your pearls to

pigs! They will trample the pearls, then turn and attack you.

But wait what if Im the problem!

Meaning that there is something on the inside that is not like what’s showing on the outside or vice versa!

Read Mark 7:21-23

The problem is on the inside!

We must learn how to have Spiritual Gates! Sometimes, we have bad on the inside and good on the outside. In these instances, we need to be able to open up our boundaries to let the good in and the bad out. In otherwords, our fences need gates in them.

Read 1 John 1:9; James 5:16;

Confession is good for the SOUL!!!

Mark 7:21-23 NIV

21 For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy,

slander, arrogance and folly. 23 All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”

1 John 1:99 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and

just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

James 5:1616 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is

powerful and effective.

Read 2 Corinthians 6:11 – 13PSA! Other people have good things to give us! Can we not be so prideful to open up to them!

Often we are guilty of closing down our boundaries to good things from others, therefore staying in a state of deprivation.

Revelation 3:20 TLB

John 1:12 TLB

11-12 Even in his own land and among his own people, the Jews, he was not accepted.

Only a few would welcome and receive him. But to all who received him, he gave the right to become children of God. All

they needed to do was to trust him to save them.[a]

2 Corinthians 6:11-13 NIV

11 We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians, and opened wide our hearts to

you. 12 We are not withholding our affection from you, but you are withholding

yours from us. 13 As a fair exchange—I speak as to my children—open wide your

hearts also.

Jesus even set boundaries!

Lets set the stage for some discussion

When you look back over the example Jesus provided for us we notice a few things:

Jesus had personal needs that he had no problem prioritizingSometimes even over the needs of othersYou never see Jesus feeling guilty about the boundaries he setJesus often instituted a boundary of separation for soul care in lieu of burn out

Lets get too it!

Are you Ready for Spiritual Promotion? Boundaries - When to say Yes - How to say No Jesus even set boundaries!

One boundary Jesus set was operating within his personal limit on earth! Jesus Accepted His Personal Limits (Part of His Incarnation)

Read- Matt 26:18, 20; Mark 1:16, 3:23, 4:38; Luke 7:36; John 10:40, 12:2

Meeting His Personal Needs. He ate healthy foods, got the sleep he needed and even took naps, took time to relax, and did a lot of walking

Matthew 26:1818-19 He said, “Enter the city. Go up to a certain man and say, ‘The Teacher

says, My time is near. I and my disciples plan to celebrate the Passover meal at your house.’” The disciples followed Jesus’ instructions to the letter, and

prepared the Passover meal.

Matthew 26:20-2120-21 After sunset, he and the Twelve were sitting around the table. During the meal, he said, “I have something hard but important to say to you: One of you is

going to hand me over to the conspirators.”

Mark 1:16-1816-18 Passing along the beach of Lake Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew net-fishing. Fishing was their regular work. Jesus said to them, “Come with me. I’ll make a new kind of fisherman out of you. I’ll show you how to catch men and women instead of perch and bass.” They didn’t ask questions. They

dropped their nets and followed.

Mark 3:23-2722-27 The religion scholars from Jerusalem came down spreading rumors that

he was working black magic, using devil tricks to impress them with spiritual power. Jesus confronted their slander with a story: “Does it make sense to send

a devil to catch a devil, to use Satan to get rid of Satan? A constantly squabbling family disintegrates. If Satan were fighting Satan, there soon

wouldn’t be any Satan left. Do you think it’s possible in broad daylight to enter the house of an awake, able-bodied man, and walk off with his possessions unless you tie him up first? Tie him up, though, and you can clean him out.

Mark 4:38The Wind Ran Out of Breath

35-38 Late that day he said to them, “Let’s go across to the other side.” They took him in the boat as he was. Other boats came along. A huge storm came up. Waves poured into the boat, threatening to sink it. And Jesus was in the

stern, head on a pillow, sleeping! They roused him, saying, “Teacher, is it nothing to you that we’re going down?”

Luke 7:36-39Anointing His Feet

36-39 One of the Pharisees asked him over for a meal. He went to the Pharisee’s house and sat down at the dinner table. Just then a woman of the village, the town harlot, having learned that Jesus was a guest in the home of the Pharisee, came with a bottle of very expensive perfume and stood at his

feet, weeping, raining tears on his feet. Letting down her hair, she dried his feet, kissed them, and anointed them with the perfume. When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man was the prophet I thought

he was, he would have known what kind of woman this is who is falling all over him.”

John 10:40-4239-42 They tried yet again to arrest him, but he slipped through their fingers. He went back across the Jordan to the place where John first baptized, and stayed

there. A lot of people followed him over. They were saying, “John did no miracles, but everything he said about this man has come true.” Many believed

in him then and there.

John 12:2-312 1-3 Six days before Passover, Jesus entered Bethany where Lazarus, so

recently raised from the dead, was living. Lazarus and his sisters invited Jesus to dinner at their home. Martha served. Lazarus was one of those sitting at the

table with them. Mary came in with a jar of very expensive aromatic oils, anointed and massaged Jesus’ feet, and then wiped them with her hair. The

fragrance of the oils filled the house.

Jesus Accepted His Personal Limits (Part of His Incarnation)Read  Matt 26:36-38Receiving Support from Friends. He sought the company of friends

Notice that sometimes the best support your friends can give you is to be ok when you say stay here and be ok when you say remain here!

Notice the solitude Jesus enjoyed by setting boundaries He withdrew from the crowds to go away on retreat, alone or with friends.

Read Mark 1:38Enjoying the Moment (These people, this place, this time).

He left one city to go to another because he couldn’t be in two places at the same timeWow, did anyone realize that boundaries can be mobile??

Read John 11:6; Mark 10:32Jesus was never in a hurry…except to go to Jerusalem and embrace his cross

Read Mark 14:32-42Abandoning Outcomes to God. Jesus was tempted to become paralyzed with fear about the cross. Satan and his demons, along with many people who hated him, were trying to kill him. Would he make it to the cross to die for us, to be “lifted up” publicly so as it draws people to God? He let go. He chose not to force things, but to trust the Father’s will. To the Father, he abandoned the outcomes of his sufferings and trials to come, as he always did.

Matthew 26:36-38 LEB36 Then Jesus went with them to a place called

Gethsemane, and he said to the disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and[a] pray.” 37 And taking along Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be distressed and

troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death. Remain here and stay

awake with me.”

Mark 1:38 LEB

38 And he said to them, “Let us go elsewhere, into the neighboring rural towns, so that I can preach there also,

because I have come out for this very reason.”

John 11:6 LEB6 So when he heard that he was sick, then he remained in

the place where[a] he was two days.

Mark 14:32-422 And they came to a place named[a] Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 And he took along Peter and James and John with him, and he began to be distressed and troubled. 34 And he said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake.” 35 And going forward a little he fell to the ground and began to pray[b] that, if it

were possible, the hour would pass from him. 36 And he said, “Abba,[c] Father, all things are possible for you! Take

away this cup from me! Yet not what I will, but what you will.”[d] 37 And he came and found them sleeping, and he

said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Were you not able to stay awake one hour? 38 Stay awake and pray

that you will not enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak!” 39 And again he went away and[e]

prayed, saying the same thing. 40 And again he came and[f] found them sleeping, for they could not keep their eyes open,[g] and they did not know what to reply to him. 41 And he came the third time and said to them, “Are you

still sleeping and resting? It is enough! The hour has come. Behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Get up, let us go! Behold, the one

who is betraying me is approaching!”

Read Luke 5:12-16Demands. He withdrew from the crowds who wanted him, for one-on-one time with the Father

Read Luke 4:18-30Abuse. He fought his way through the crowd that was trying to throw him off a cliff for claiming to be the Messiah

Luke 5:15-1612 And it happened that while he was in one of the towns, there

was[q] a man covered with leprosy.[r] And when he[s] saw Jesus, he fell down on his face and[t] begged him, saying, “Lord, if you are willing, you are able to make me clean.” 13 And extending

his[u] hand he touched him, saying, “I am willing; be clean.” And immediately the leprosy went away from him. 14 And he ordered him, “Tell no one, but go and[v] show yourself to the priest and

bring the offering[w] for your cleansing just as Moses commanded, for a testimony to them.

15 But the report about him spread even more, and large crowds were gathering to hear him[x] and to be healed of their illnesses. 16 But he himself was withdrawing in the wilderness and praying.

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,

because of which he has anointed meto proclaim good news to the poor.

He has sent meto proclaim release to the captives,    and recovery of sight to the blind,

to send out in freedom those who are oppressed,19

to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.”[p]20 And he rolled up the scroll and[q] gave it[r] back to the

attendant and[s] sat down. And the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were looking intently at him. 21 And he began to say to them, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 And they were all speaking well of him, and were astonished at the gracious words that were coming out of his mouth. And

they were saying, “Is this man not the son of Joseph?” 23 And he said to them, “Doubtless you will tell me this parable: ‘Physician,

heal yourself!’ Whatever we have heard that took place in Capernaum, do here in your hometown also!” 24 And he said,

“Truly I say to you that no prophet is acceptable in his own hometown. 25 But in truth I say to you, there were many widows

in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut for three years and six months while a great famine took place over all the

land. 26 And Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to Zarephath in the region of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.

27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was made clean except Naaman the

Syrian.” 28 And all those in the synagogue were filled with anger when they[t] heard these things. 29 And they stood up and[u]

forced him out of the town and brought him up to the edge of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him

down the cliff. 30 But he passed through their midst and[v] went on his way.

Baiting Questions. When the religious leaders asked him baiting questions to make him look foolish he answered with incisive questions of his own (Matthew 21:23-27, 22:15-22).

The bait question is one of the oldest behavior provoking questions. It is a specialized question designed to introduce the possibility of incriminating evidence during an interview in an effort to entice the suspect to change an earlier response.

Does anyone remember Eve in the Garden of Eden?

Matthew 12:46-5046 And[a] while[b] he was still speaking to the crowds,

behold, his mother and brothers were standing there outside, desiring to speak to him. 47 And someone told him, “Behold,

your mother and your brothers are standing there outside desiring to speak to you.” 48 But he answered and[c] said to the one who told him, “Who is my mother, and who are my

brothers?” 49 And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Behold my mother and my brothers!

50 For whoever does the will of my Father who is in heaven, he is my brother and sister and mother.

Matthew 21:23-27 TLB

23 When he had returned to the Temple and was teaching, the chief priests and other Jewish leaders came up to him

and demanded to know by whose authority he had thrown out the merchants the day before.[a]

24 “I’ll tell you if you answer one question first,” Jesus replied. 25 “Was John the Baptist sent from God or not?”

They talked it over among themselves. “If we say, ‘From God,’” they said, “then he will ask why we didn’t believe what

John said. 26 And if we deny that God sent him, we’ll be mobbed, for the crowd all think he was a prophet.” 27 So they

finally replied, “We don’t know!”And Jesus said, “Then I won’t answer your question either.

Matthew 22:15-22 TLB15 Then the Pharisees met together to try to think of some

way to trap Jesus into saying something for which they could arrest him. 16 They decided to send some of their men along with the Herodians[a] to ask him this question: “Sir, we know

you are very honest and teach the truth regardless of the consequences, without fear or favor. 17 Now tell us, is it right

to pay taxes to the Roman government or not?”18 But Jesus saw what they were after. “You hypocrites!” he

exclaimed. “Who are you trying to fool with your trick questions? 19 Here, show me a coin.” And they handed him a

penny.20 “Whose picture is stamped on it?” he asked them. “And

whose name is this beneath the picture?”21 “Caesar’s,” they replied.

“Well, then,” he said, “give it to Caesar if it is his, and give God everything that belongs to God.”

22 His reply surprised and baffled them, and they went away.

The serpent was the craftiest of all the creatures the Lord God had made. So the serpent came to the woman. “Really?” he asked. “None of the fruit in the garden? God says you mustn’t eat any of it?”

Here is where she and sometimes us take the bait!

2-3 “Of course we may eat it,” the woman told him. “It’s only the fruit from the tree at the center of the garden that we are not to eat. God says we mustn’t eat it or even touch it, or we will die.”

The question for discussion tonight is - why do we take the bait?

Why has this one tactic worked for centuries since the Garden of Eden?

Genesis 3:1-7 TLB

3 The serpent was the craftiest of all the creatures the Lord God had made.

So the serpent came to the woman. “Really?” he asked. “None of the fruit in the garden? God says you mustn’t eat

any of it?”2-3 “Of course we may eat it,” the

woman told him. “It’s only the fruit from the tree at the center of the garden that we are not to eat. God says we mustn’t

eat it or even touch it, or we will die.”4 “That’s a lie!” the serpent hissed.

“You’ll not die! 5 God knows very well that the instant you eat it you will

become like him, for your eyes will be opened—you will be able to distinguish

good from evil!”6 The woman was convinced. How

lovely and fresh looking it was! And it would make her so wise! So she ate

some of the fruit and gave some to her husband, and he ate it too. 7 And as

they ate it, suddenly they became aware of their nakedness, and were

embarrassed. So they strung fig leaves together to cover themselves around

the hips.

Matthew 13:53-5853-54 When Jesus had finished giving these

33 “Lord,” they answered, “we want our sight.”34 Jesus had compassion on them and

touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.

John 5:1-14 MSG

Even on the Sabbath5 1-6 Soon another Feast came around and

Jesus was back in Jerusalem. Near the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem there was a pool, in

Hebrew called Bethesda, with five alcoves. Hundreds of sick people—blind, crippled,

paralyzed—were in these alcoves. One man had been an invalid there for thirty-eight

years. When Jesus saw him stretched out by the pool and knew how long he had been there, he said, “Do you want to get well?”

7 The sick man said, “Sir, when the water is stirred, I don’t have anybody to put me

in the pool. By the time I get there, somebody else is already in.”

8-9 Jesus said, “Get up, take your bedroll, start walking.” The man was healed on the

spot. He picked up his bedroll and walked off.9-10 That day happened to be the Sabbath. The Jews stopped the healed man and said, “It’s the Sabbath. You can’t carry your bedroll

around. It’s against the rules.”11 But he told them, “The man who made me

well told me to. He said, ‘Take your bedroll and start walking.’”

12-13 They asked, “Who gave you the order to take it up and start walking?” But the

healed man didn’t know, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd.

14 A little later Jesus found him in the Temple and said, “You look wonderful! You’re well! Don’t return to a sinning life or something

worse might happen.”

Who has hung out with people who really was not on your spiritual level simply because you were still just trying to fit in with the crowd?

The question for all of us is……Do you believe?

Has anyone ever fallen victim to not Trusting Jesus because man has failed you before?V17-18

A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. 18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.”

We have situation where….A father sought deliverance for his son who was mute and had seizures and said to Jesus, “If you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”

Jesus put it back on the father, “`If you can’?” Who have we underestimated because the person before them couldn’t get the job done?Could this be something impacting your current relationship because of a prior relationship? Could this be something impacting your current job because of a previous job?

You fill in the blank? Could this be ________ impacting____because of a previous_____

Mark 9:17-27 NIV17 A man in the crowd answered, “Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a

spirit that has robbed him of speech. 18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his

teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.”

19 “You unbelieving generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I

put up with you? Bring the boy to me.”20 So they brought him. When the spirit saw

Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled

around, foaming at the mouth.21 Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has

he been like this?”“From childhood,” he answered. 22 “It has often

thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help

us.”23 “‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is

possible for one who believes.”24 Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do

believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to

the scene, he rebuked the impure spirit. “You deaf and mute spirit,” he said, “I command you,

come out of him and never enter him again.”26 The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a

corpse that many said, “He’s dead.” 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his

feet, and he stood up.

Read Mark John 8:1-11

Jesus offered grace…. To the humbled and the broken

That is enough right there…. If you don’t hear or do anything else?

Think about who in your life right now - just needs a little grace?

Who have you mistreated, brushed-off, talk down to, overlooked, judged to harshly inspite of your own short-comings, sin, bad decisions, imperfect moments?

Notice in verse 6-7, the text says 6 They asked Jesus this question, because they wanted to test him and bring some charge against him. But Jesus simply bent over and started writing on the ground with his finger. 7 They kept on asking Jesus about the woman

Where is your focus in this season of your life? Are you the person who sees everyone else’s shortcomings, faults, and misgivings?

john 8:1-11 CEV

1 but Jesus walked out to the Mount of Olives. 2 Then early the next morning he went to the temple. The people came to him, and he sat

down[a] and started teaching them.3 The Pharisees and the teachers of the Law of

Moses brought in a woman who had been caught in bed with a man who wasn’t her

husband. They made her stand in the middle of the crowd. 4 Then they said, “Teacher, this

woman was caught sleeping with a man who isn’t her husband. 5 The Law of Moses teaches

that a woman like this should be stoned to death! What do you say?”

6 They asked Jesus this question, because they wanted to test him and bring some charge

against him. But Jesus simply bent over and started writing on the ground with his finger.

7 They kept on asking Jesus about the woman. Finally, he stood up and said, “If any of you have never sinned, then go ahead and throw the first stone at her!” 8 Once again he bent over and began writing on the ground. 9 The people left one by one, beginning with the oldest. Finally,

Jesus and the woman were there alone.10 Jesus stood up and asked her, “Where is everyone? Isn’t there anyone left to accuse

you?”11 “No sir,” the woman answered.

Then Jesus told her, “I am not going to accuse you either. You may go now, but don’t sin

anymore.”[b]
