TERM 1 WEEK 5 2021

Welcome to 2021!

What a fantastic start to the year we have had! Everyone has returned and are enjoying their new classrooms

and teachers. Welcome to our new families and students who are fitting in well to their new school.

Swimming Carnival

Our senior classes had a wonderful time at the Swimming Carnival this week. A huge thank you to Mrs Pringle

for her great organisation of the day. We tried something different this year and had a smaller group at the

pool for the competitive races and then everyone joined in for the novelty events later in the day. Hungry

hippo and noodle race were a hit!

PJ visits Parliament House

Early this team we were very proud to see PJ represent more than 800,000 public

school students in NSW. He travelled to Parliament House in Sydney as part of a

steering committee, to present a proposal to Education Minister Sarah Mitchell. PJ

is a wonderful advocate for not only our students but students across NSW. He will

continue on this steering committee throughout 2021.

COVID & school

While the situation is looking more positive in NSW, COVID continues to challenge us and we still have some

restrictions in schools. Parents and carers are reminded NOT to send children to school if they are unwell. We

would also appreciate students NOT arriving before 9:00am to reduce not only congestion in the front foyer

but also the wait time for students. Have a great week, Jane

Positive Behaviour at Carenne

As we welcome all of our students and families back to school we would like to share some of our positive be-

haviour expectations with you. Our three expectations are Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be a Learner. Sitting under

each expectation we then have an additional 5 core values as follows:

Hands, feet to self Wait and take turns Listen

Stay with the group Personal Space Think

Look after yourself Be a good friend Care for things

Ask for help Care for things Try your best

When using our expectations and values we might show the visual and then say such things as;

Are you being safe? Are you asking for help?

Are you being a learner? Are you trying your best?

Are you being respectful? Are you being a good friend?

Or you could simplify it by simply showing the visual and repeating the value.

Positive behaviour strategies are evidenced based and we have refined our strategies over the years to ensure

we use a common language and have a shared goal. These strategies are proving to be very successful in our

TEACHING AND LEARNING

COVID Intensive Learning Support Program

Welcome to Mel Betland who as been appointed as a Paraprofessional to

work as part of the COVID Intensive learning Support Program which will

run during 2021.

As we know, 2020 was a tough year for all. This is particularly so for our

students and teachers who have risen to the challenges in a disrupted

year that included seven weeks of remote learning due to COVID-19, and

in some areas, that came on top of bushfires and floods.

Through this program, schools will be provided with funding to employ

additional educators who will deliver small group tuition for

identified students. The focus will be on building capacity of particular

skills within literacy to support learning and achievement of students in

class. This will be tailored to their requirements to ensure that students’

benefit from high-quality literacy instruction that best meets their

learning needs, led by teachers and educators working in partnership

with classroom teachers.

Term 1 at Carenne School has been very busy for all students in Class 1. Welcome to Angus, Ardor, Callen,

Gordon, Lachlan, Matthew and Richard.

Class 1 are learning the letter names and sounds of the Alphabet, counting numbers, songs, core

communication symbols , handwriting and learning to read skills.

Each week we are reading a book and completing fun activities based on the

story.

Some of our favourites so far have been ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’, ‘Brown

Bear, What do you see?’ and ‘One Little Dinosaur’.

We have recently made some creative artwork to complement our book of the

week.

Class 1 are working together to learn our PBL rules of how to ‘Be Safe’, to ‘Be

Respectful’ and to ‘Be a Learner’.

CLASS 2

Welcome to Class 2—2021. It been a busy start to the year with our new class. Our students are settling well

into their weekly routine. We have already started getting out and about and the Class 2 crew have been

loving their weekly outings to the park and fortnightly trips to Pet Therapy. We have also been taking part in

music, dance and sports lessons. All these experiences make school a fun and exciting place to be!

In class we have started a Science Unit of work on ‘Materials’. So far we have looked at objects made from

fabric, metal, paper and plastic. In English we are reading a story book each week and have been completing

fun activities based on the book. Some our favourites so far have been “Who Sank the Boat” and “The Very

Hungry Caterpillar”. Developing independent living skills will be a very important part of our program this year.

Our school motto is “Towards Independence” and our class will be doing their best to improve their skills with

communication and self care. It’s already been exciting to see some of our students using sign language and

washing their hands all by themselves.

CLASS 3

We have had a great start to the new school year in Class 3. We have a wonderful class of boys who are all

enjoying getting to know each other. We welcome Banjo and Lachlan to our school and welcome the boys and

their families into the Carenne community.

It has been great to meet with families over recent weeks to discuss IEP’s. These will be sent home shortly to

be signed.

The boys have had a busy start to the year. We have been working on our learning programs in the classroom

as well as lots of additional activities such as music with Ms Allen, dancing with Mrs Kemp, library with Mrs

Smith, Pet Therapy with Mrs Gavin, The Art Room with Ms Moore and Linda and swimming at CityFit. The boys

all love these extra activities and we are lucky to have so many talented staff at our school to run them.

We are looking forward to a fantastic year full of fun and learning!

CLASS 4

Sue Flude (Teacher)

Hello everybody and welcome to 2021 in Class 4! We have all settled in extremely well to our class routine

and are already doing amazing work. In English we have read ‘I’m Australian too’ by Mem Fox and

‘Belinda’ by Pamela Allen. In maths we have been working really hard recognising our numbers and using

them to add and subtract. We enjoyed watching ‘Pete the cat and his groovy buttons’, which is a fun

video clip demonstrating simple subtraction. In HSIE we have started our unit on National and World

celebrations and are creating wonderful art works to complement this unit. Everyone loves dancing with

Mrs Kemp and music lessons with Ms Allen. We have had a visit from some of the Pet therapy animals and

Mrs Gavin. On Wednesday everyone enjoys doing money and science activities with Mr Helm and bike

riding in the afternoon. We are all very proud of how well everyone is progressing at swimming lessons.

This term we have been learning hockey skills, having lots of the fun hitting the ball and learning to control

the speed and direction.

CLASS 10

Class 10 is off to a wonderful start this year with a combination of characters that have slipped into

comfortable daily routines. We welcomed back lots of familiar faces and were delighted with the arrival of

two new students; Tyler and Zaiden. We also welcomed new members of staff Kelly Mills, Mel Betland and

Hannah Austen. We have lots of exciting and engaging work to get through this year and are excited to

share our educational journey with you… beginning with Music.

Every week Class 10 participates in music lessons prepared by Ms Allen. This music program is extremely

valued as music can lead to better brain development in children, increases in human connection and

stress relief. Students have enjoyed trying a range of musical instruments and playing games that explore

composing sounds that allows them to express themselves in new and creative ways.

CLASS 9

Class 9 are all settled into our new classroom and fresh new routines. Our timetable is packed with some

fabulous programs this year including our new weekly music lesson with Miss Allen in the library. Class 9 has the

special opportunity to participate in a weekly Coffee Club and Treat Trolley program this year. The students are

going to learn money handling skills, customer service skills and working as a team to provide these necessary

services of making hot beverages for staff and delivering special treats for students every week. We are looking

forward to weekly community visits to buy stock and supplies needed for our trolley and coffee club orders.

Work experience started this week and students have been placed into groups that will meet specific student

needs and learn skills necessary for work placement in the future.

A highlight so far has been the swimming carnival this week. It was a wonderful day and the students had a

great time competing in races, playing novelty games and participating in the big splash and the diving

competition. Looking forward to what will be an amazing year for class 9.

CLASS 14

Oh my goodness this year is off to a busy start. It is so good to see all the students back and so ready to get

on with all their learning and having a lots of fun with friends on the way.

Class 14 would like to welcome Ms Allen and Ms Marshall to the Resort team this year. I’m sure that they

will both enjoy their time with this amazing group of students.

So far this term we have really enjoyed our Sensory Stories with Mrs Smith in Library and Mrs Gavin has

been bringing up some interesting visitors for Pet Therapy. We have done some cooking with Ms Allen and

we are learning all about our bodies with me. We made a big Skeleton which who we named FRED who

happens to be as tall as Ellie!

Hydrotherapy is underway with Dee and the students are really enjoying their session. We are so busy!

CLASS 13

Welcome to Class 13, 2021! Brady, Jericho, Hannah, Talal, Emma, Charlotte and Danny have had a very

fun, and very busy, start to the term. We have enjoyed spending some Friday morning time with Allen

exploring all the different avenues of music—a lot of laughter can be heard from the library during this

time! We have been lucky enough to take part in hockey on a Monday, learning new skills and working on

our hand-eye coordination. We had a great day out at the swimming pool for the annual swimming

carnival and enjoyed cooling off in the pool. In science we have been exploring different forms of energy,

and have conducted experiments to explore these—we really enjoyed the tin can telephone. So much to

squeeze into the start of our term and enjoying every moment!

CLASS 8

Welcome to 2021 in class 8! We have already been super busy this term and have been Ready to Learn since

week 1. In Mathematics, we have started our math groups and working on number and algebra. We have

also been developing our editing , reading and comprehension skills each morning in literacy. Science this

term is focusing on the different forms of energy and participating in a range of fantastic experiments to

further our knowledge including “dancing rice” and making string phones. This year we are very lucky as we

get to have music lessons each Friday with Ms Allen and dance with Mrs Kemp. This week we all had an

amazing time at the swimming carnival and the start of work experience for our year 9 and 11 students as

well as Tech Mandatory for our year 8 students. What a great start to the year with all students displaying

positive behaviour and showing a keen focus towards their learning, well done class 8!

CLASS 5

Class 5 have had a wonderful start to the year. HSIE, Library and Art with Ms Moore, Science and Food

Technology with Mr Helm and English, Maths and PDHPE with Mrs Pringle, and Ms Molly ensuring that all

students are involved in all activities every day. The class have cooked pancakes and eggs many ways. We

have also been on an excursion to Machattie Park to conduct a treasure hunt. This was followed by

ordering an ice-cream from Annie’s Ice-cream. All students had a wonderful time at the swimming

carnival, with the most fun had during the novelty events.

CLASS 12

Hello from Room 12! We have had a fabulous start to school 2021, with the students settling in well to their new

room.

We have started our learning activities with some fun science experiments about different types of energy,

making hundred-and-thousands “dance” up and down without touching them, just using sound waves from our

noisy banging or even by just humming! We made a tea bag “fly” up to the ceiling using the heat from a match

to warm the air and make it rise, taking the ash of the tea bag with it! We surprised Principal Crosland when she

saw us surrounded by (clean) rubbish, busy with hot glue guns, scissors and textas – but we were just making Art

out of recycled materials! We have also made paper art inspired by American eco-artist, Grant Manier, who

loves working with recycled paper to make amazing collages. Grant has autism, and in an uplifting interview we

watched he said that… “if you just feel different compared to everyone else, that’s fine, remember, it’s not what

we can’t do that makes us different, it’s what we can do that makes us more”.

We will be remembering his beautiful words as we learn together. We have also enjoyed the fixed equipment

and bike riding in the beautiful weather, as well as dancing in our room, doing puzzles, listening to and/or

reading stories, having scissors-pack-rock battles, maths activities in number, measuring and mixing up some

delicious pancakes, fruit muffins and ice-cream-in-a-bag... as well as visiting the Library with Mrs Smith, Music

lessons with Ms Allen, Special Art with Ms Moore and Lovely Linda, History with Mr Helm AND Dance with Mrs

Kemp – so much is happening! We also had a fabulous day at the pool for our 2021 Swimming Carnival! We are

looking forward to sharing with you, our adventures in Room 12 in the year ahead!

CLASS 7

Great to see all students in Class 7 back to school and ready for a great year ahead of us. I look forward to

working with the parents and care givers to provide the best education for members of my class this year.

The students are thriving and ready to embark on learning, which is a sign of high achievement by the end

of the year. In Maths and English, students are working on their IEPs and there is potential. This term in

Science, they are learning about Energy and have explored different sources of energy. In Work

Education, students are preparing for work experience, while in PDHPE, they are exploring Life Ready

skills. We had a great time at the swimming carnival this week and thanks to Montana and Faith who

represented our class.

CLASS 11

Welcome to class 11 2021! We have had a busy but great start to the year. Our class is a happy little group

consisting of Bligh, Tristan, Malaki, Seth, Jack and Tyron. During PE this term class 11 are improving their fitness

and swimming skills by visiting Cityfit every Friday and partaking in swimming lessons. In Science this term we

are learning about different types of energy and conducting experiments to demonstrate how they are used. In

particular class 11 loved the rocket made out of a teabag. We may have some future scientists in this class!

CLASS 6

Class 6 has had a great start to term one, we have enjoyed getting to know each other and are looking

forward to the year ahead.

In Agriculture this term we are learning about Viticulture. We have researched how grapes grow, how they

are harvested and how grapes are used in different products. This week in class we conducted an

experiment to turn grapes into sultanas.

In Science we are looking at circuits and switches. We are investigating different components of circuits.

This week we had our school swimming carnival. Students swam in 50m and 25m races as well as

participating in the big splash and novelty events. It was a great day.

We are extremely proud of PJ who recently travelled to Sydney to be a part of the Education Minister’s

Student Council Steering Committee. PJ joined 13 other students who gathered to discuss and have a say

about education and school policy.

The students at the Macquarie Tutorial are excited to be back at school and have already had a busy start

to the year. It is great to see the enthusiasm of our students on a daily basis working hard in class and

enjoying time with peers at recess and lunch.

This week Class Moss enjoyed canoeing at Lake Wallace in Wallerawang on Monday, all students enjoyed

our time at the swimming carnival on Tuesday and all classes have enjoyed preparing Thursday lunch for

all students and staff.

ART NEWS

Clare Moore and Linda Jones

It’s wonderful to be back in the art room for another year! We’ve started our Art Program with a celebration of

the United Nations “International Year of Peace and Trust 2021”. Our art activities have focussed on the

symbols we associate with Peace, and the students have created stunning artworks of the Peace Sign and Dove.

We’ve used a variety of materials and techniques including mosaic, collage and printing. Look at the wonderful

artists in action!
