PROJECT ABSTRACT
Dogpatch is a historical and mixed-use area in San
Francisco. In the early period, it was a heavy industrial
area. Factories produce ropes, irons, and boat yard.
These products shipped to Mexico, Peru, China, and
Japan. In 1867, There was a residential development
for workers, but their living quality was not in good
condition. They spent a lot of time in the factory, and
they got the low salary for the living. Nowadays, the
Dogpatch is in a new transition in class and land use.
According to the city planning department, the water-
front area of the site will be developed to a park and
beach for wondering and kayaking. The project is
based on the structure feature to design a surfboard
& Bike workshop. My idea is to provide a perspective
which connects past and present for the new tran-
sition in Dogpatch. The research indicates factories
use a lot of moment-frame structure system in every
factory. Therefore, the structure type becomes a
strong element which can transform the neighboring
factories and residential to have the new shift in
application and design.

DESIGN PROCESS
The moment frame structure is created from the
structure grid, so the spans and spaces are symmetric
or equal. If there is a program gets into the moment
frame structure, the columns will appear in the program
space, and it is the same problem in traditional factory
type architecture. In this case, I use the program
dimensions as the primary factor for a structured grid;
then the programs manipulate an asymmetric matrix
and try to find the best composition to generate a
moment frame structure. The structure will automatic
contain the programs, and there will be no any
columns in the program spaces.
