In Western literature and art, and indeed in Western thought in general, there has been a long-standing tradition of identifying love with death. Romeo and Juliet, Tristan and Iseult, Anthony and Cleopatra and Freud’s association of Eros and Thanatos are just a few examples that spring to mind. In Japanese literary traditions, love has been associated with dreams. The Buddhist implication behind this is clear. At the heart of Buddhist philosophy is an acknowledgment of the transience of experience and the lack of permanence in human affairs. Of course, such transience is believed to underlie all worldly existence, but Japanese poets grounded much of their understanding of ephemerality in their treatment of love.

Love is indeed one of the more evanescent, fickle and mysterious of human emo-tions. Its power over us is singular. Love engulfs us; surprises us; abandons us. Love elevates us. Love tortures us. It moves us. It halts us. We are slaves to love. We are masters of love. But how do we know that love is not some elaborate trickery - the result of psychological projection, our fear of being alone, centuries of tradition, and a lifetime of socialization by Celine Dion songs, Meg Ryan movies and TV com-mercials? And if love is an illusion, why does it feel so real? Should we just ignore our hearts and give up on love? Or, is there anything to gain from surrendering to the spell of love and succumbing to its reverie?

It is these questions that Daniel MacIvor tackles with Arigato, Tokyo. A true man of the theatre, MacIvor has turned to classical Japanese Noh theatre to frame his exploration. Noh theatre is a form that dates back to the 14th century. Many of its characters are masked. Its plays are structured around chanting and employ a codi-fied system of physical gestures. The actors’ movements are slow, the language is poetic, and the overall tone is trance inducing. Plots are usually drawn from legend and classical literature. The most impressive Noh plays are cautionary tales about romantic attachment.

Like love, great art creates a sense of expansiveness and eternity. It launches a search for understanding that is inexhaustible. Like an elaborate seduction, be-neath each and every perceptible meaning lie others. Like a love affair, it always carries a seemingly infinite potential of new subtleties, inversions, secret codes and ineffabilities. With Arigato, Tokyo, MacIvor invites us into a world filled with ambigu-ity, mystery and beauty. He gives us space to contemplate what it means to have a heart. He allows us to see beyond the waking dream that is love. He shows us that it is both the truth of love and the lie of love that completes our humanity.

DANIEL MACIVOR – PLAYWRIGHT

Daniel has written numerous award-win-ning plays including A Beautiful View, Commu-nion, The Best Brothers, and Bingo!, and his work has been translated into

French, Portuguese, Spanish, Czech, German and Japanese. With Daniel Brooks he created the solo shows House, Here Lies Henry, Monster, Cul-de-sac, and This Is What Happens Next. Daniel received the Governor General’s Literary Award for Drama for his collection of plays I Still Love You and he was awarded the Siminovitch Prize for Theatre. He is also the recipient of an Obie Award and a GLAAD Award for his play In On It. He is currently play-wright-in-residence at Tarragon Theatre and Factory Theatre Toronto. With Factory and Necessary Angel Theatre he is currently developing a new solo play Who Killed Spalding Gray? and his play His Greatness is being translated into French by Michel Tremblay. Daniel divides his time between Toronto and Avondale, Nova Scotia.

BRENDAN HEALY – DIRECTOR

Originally from Montreal, Brendan began his career as an actor, appearing most-notably in Peter Hinton’s produc-tion of Greg MacArthur’s Girls! Girls! Girls!, presented at the 2001 TransAm-ériques Festival. It was at that festival that Brendan met Richard Maxwell, whose company, the New York City Players, is considered to be one of the most influential alternative the-

atre companies currently operating in Manhattan. That meeting led Brendan to New York where he interned under Mr. Maxwell and where he decided to dedicate himself exclusively to direct-ing. Since relocating to Toronto over a decade ago, Brendan has established himself as a central figure in the city’s theatre scene and his work has been presented across the country. Notable productions include: Jean Genet’s The Maids, Nina Arsenault’s The Silicone Diaries, Sarah Kane’s Blasted, Martin Crimp’s Fewer Emergencies and Wal-lace Shawn’s A Thought in Three Parts. Brendan is a graduate of the National Theatre School’s Directing Program and he has trained extensively with one of the pioneers of the American avant-garde Anne Bogart and the SITI Company. His productions have garnered multiple Dora Mavor Moore Awards and he is a recipient of the Ken McDougall and the Pauline McGib-bon awards for directing. Brendan was the associate artist at Crow’s Theatre before becoming the Artistic Direc-tor of Buddies in Bad Times and he is a regular instructor at the National Theatre School of Canada.

MICHAEL DUFAYS – YORI TOSHI

Michael Dufays is a Graduate of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (NYC) where he developed his love for acting and stage

combat. Since then, Michael’s stage career has taken him from coast to coast, including touring with the award

winning company, Red Sky Perfor-mance, in Raven stole the Sun, and touring Europe and the UK with the award- winning, Corpus Dance Projects. Favourite roles include: Kyoketei, in Duel of Ages, originating the role of Horne, and playing SunWuKong, in Forbidden Phoenix (LKTYP and Gateway Theatre, BC), and Bill, in The Voice of the Turtle (The Classic Theatre Festival, Perth), which earned him a nomination for “Best Actor” with the Capital Critics Circle award jury. Favourite film credits include: Foster in, Shaolin Delivery Boy (Zed Channel/CBC), Clockwatcher in A Day At The Office (Bravo Channel/CBC), and Det. Dumbo in Heroic Bloodshed (RiotAct) - receiving a nomination at the Action on Film Festival in L.A for “Breakout Male Action Star.” Michael has had the privilege of Assistant Fight Directing at the Stratford Festival for two seasons, is a Certified Instructor with FDC, and is a co-founder of RiotACT, a multi award winning Action creation team of fighters and filmmakers (www.riotact.ca). Michael would like to personally thank Iris Turcott and Daniel MacIvor for this incredible opportunity to create a role in his play. (Tarragon); The Rez Sisters (Factory); The Jones Boy (surface/underground); Stitch (Summer-Works-Spotlight Award); Tout Comme Elle (Necessary Angel); Spirit Horse (Roseneath Theatre); Flowers (Rose City Theatre Festival); and Love’s Labour’s Lost (Resurgence). Film and TV credits include Running Wolf (Narrow Path) and King (Showcase). Cara has a BFA in Acting from the University of Windsor.

TYSON JAMES – ETTA WAKI

Tyson is thrilled to be making his main stage debut at Buddies! It’s been an honour and a privilege to bring Daniel MacIvor’s latest work to life with such an

amazing team of artists. Tyson is a Ryer-son University Acting Program gradu-ate and is proud to have made his way through Buddies incredible Youth Program. There, he premiered his own work ‘speak’ under the direction of Evalyn Parry which went on to become ‘discharge’ in Toronto’s Fringe Festival, which included long time collaborator Paul Charbonneau. He is also a cast member of the well-received Queer Bathroom Monologues by Sheila Cavanagh and will be appearing in a second show later this season in Alistair Newton’s Of a Monstrous Child, making its debut at Buddies this May. Thank you Brendan for this incredible opportunity. Your confidence in me has been the greatest gift. To my mom: Your unconditional love has made all my dreams a reality. I love you. HIROSHI MIYAMOTO – CHOREOGRAPHER

India), Hiroshi Miyamoto has performed nationally and internationally in the numerous choreographies in diverse styles including in his own choreogra-phies. He is originally from Japan. After completing his bachelor of law degree from Hosei University in Tokyo, he moved to Canada to study dance. He was a student in the Performance Training Program at Main Dance in Vancouver, B.C. in 1995/1996, and a scholarship student of the Merce Cunningham Studio in Manhattan, N.Y.

in 1998/2000. His first full length contemporary dance work Mango Cherry Mix (2009) in collaboration with Navtej Johar has been chosen as one the three best dance works of 2009 by Timeout Magazine, Delhi. In Canada, his choreographies have been seen at Canasian Dance Festival, fFIDA, Harbourfront Centre, Kinetic Cohesion Provincial Dance Festival, Red, SooRyu Dance Festival, 8:08 Series, in the productions of Green Tea Collective and 3M Dances Collective in Toronto, MAI (Montreal, arts interculturels), Studio 303, and Tangente

ALISTAIR NEWTON – ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

Alistair Newton is a Toronto based play-wright, director of theatre and opera, founding Artistic Director of Ecce Homo Theatre and current Ap-

prentice Artistic Director at Buddies in Bad Times. Alistair is also a journalist and published author, a member of the Lincoln Center Theater’s Directors Lab, former Apprentice Director for the Ensemble Studio of the Canadian Opera Company and holds a BFA from the University of Victoria. Recent work includes director/dramaturge for Bella: The Color of Love by Teresa Tova and Mary Kerr (Philadelphia Theatre Company, a commission for the 2011 Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts), and director for the Canadian premiere of Edmund White’s Terre Haute for the 2012 SummerWorks Festival. Currently, Alistair is develop-ing That Fitful Strain of Melancholy (or Edie didn’t fall) with playwright Jamie Ebbs. Alistair’s latest play Of a Mon-strous Child: a gaga musical opens May 16th as the final production of Buddies 2012/13 Season.

ERIC ARMSTRONG – DIALECT COACH

Eric Armstrong is a Dialect Coach for Film and Theatre, and is the Graduate Program Director (MFA) at York University’s Department of Theatre, where he

teaches voice, speech, dialects, and Shakespeare text to students in the BFA and MFA acting programs. Recent

theatre coaching credits include Blasted at Buddies in Bad Times, Blue/Orange for Theatre Kingston, Another Africa: Shine Your Eye for Volcano/Canadian Stage, The Cosmonaut’s Last Message... at Canadian Stage, Master Harold and the Boys for the Thousand Islands Playhouse, and Eternal Hydra for Crow’s Theatre. Projects in feature film include working with Michelle Williams and Sarah Silverman on Sarah Polley’s Take This Waltz and coaching Isabelle Fuhrman in The Orphan.

TANISHA TAITT – APPRENTICE LIGHTING DESIGNER

An actor/songwriter/director/singer and newbie playwright, Tanisha harbors a deep love for the magic of light. She is pleased to be back at Buddies after

serving as Apprentice Lighting Design-er on last season’s The Maids and Nightwood Theatre’s The Penelopiad. Most recently, Tanisha directed the Young People’s Theatre production of The Power Of Harriet T! and appeared at SummerWorks in her playwriting debut, Violent Be Violet. She co-direct-ed YPT’s Would You Say The Name Of This Play?(NGGRFG), was Assistant Director of Soulpepper’s Faith Healer, and was the 2009/10 Apprentice Director for Obsidian Theatre. Known by her peers for marrying altruism with art, she has been twice nominated for a YWCA Woman of Distinction Award for her commitment to artistic excellence and social justice. Tanisha is thankful to Brendan for being so welcoming and to her brilliant mentor, Kimberly. Next on the horizon -- directing the musical Bare for Toronto Youth Theatre.

BUDDIES IN BAD TIMES THEATRE ARTIST RESIDENCY PROGRAMBuddies’ Artist Residency Program is a unique program in the country devoted to the nurturing and development of queer voices through the creation of original performance works. Resident artists are offered space and time in the theatre along with dramaturgical, technical, production, and administrative support.

Buddies productions developed in residency include Tawiah M’carthy’s Obaaberima and Ecce Homo’s upcoming Of a Monstrous Child: a gaga musical.

1. QUEER, referring to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered identity, encapsulates the core of our organization. Buddies in Bad Times Theatre is a queer-run organization committed to representing the LGBT community by supporting its artists, and by telling its stories.

2. QUEER, referring to anything different or outside of the norm, represents the nature of artistic work presented at 12 Alexander Street.
