The Grand Canyon is not only a natural wonder of the world, but has also been named a World Heritage site.

To see great views from your car or the free shuttle bus: Get your first view of Grand Canyon by taking a five-minute walk from Grand Canyon Visitor Center to Mather Point. Or, ride the free shuttle buses to see Grand Canyon vistas. From Tusayan hotels, take the Tusayan Route (purple) and transfer in the park to the Kaibab/Rim Route (orange) to access canyon viewpoints and hiking trails. You can also drive 25 miles (40 km) along Desert View Drive. Stop at viewpoints, learn about ancestral Puebloan people at Tusayan Museum, and visit the historic Desert View Watchtower. Finally, view sunrise or sunset by car from Lipan Point on Desert View Drive or ride the Kaibab/Rim Route shuttle bus to Yaki Point.

To explore the canyon on foot or bicycle:Walk any portion of the 13-mile (20 km) Rim Trail to see Grand Canyon. Use the free shuttle bus to get back to where you started. You can also hike into Grand Canyon for a different perspec-tive. Take a short hike on the scenic South Kaibab Trail to Cedar Ridge or prepare for a longer day hike on the Bright Angel Trail. Or, bicycle the Greenway Trail to South Kaibab Trailhead or ride Hermit Road to Hermits Rest to feel the wind on your face. Lastly, view sunrise or sunset as you bicycle the Greenway Trail or stroll the Rim Trail to enjoy the light changing on the canyon walls and in the sky.

To enjoy the canyon with children:Pick up a Junior Ranger booklet at park visitor centers. Complete fun activities, attend a park ranger program, and earn a badge. You can also learn about Grand Canyon during park ranger programs, such as “natural wonders”, “kids rock!”, or “critter chat”. Be sure your kids get their Junior Ranger booklet signed. Or, walk with your family through historic Grand Canyon Village. Wander through shops, grab a bite to eat, and discover the amazing Kolb brothers at Kolb Studio.

Finally, view sunrise or sunset as you stroll the Trail of Time, which begins at Yavapai Geology Museum. AZ

Each year, millions of people travel to Arizona without seeing the grandeur of the Grand Canyon. Teachers, books and documenta-ries can explain how the Canyon was shaped by wind and water. To witness first hand the power of nature, you must peer over the rim of the upside down mountain.

In 1903, a pioneering President visited this majestic chasm.

“The Grand Canyon fills me with awe. It is beyond compari-son- -beyond description; absolutely unparalleled throughout the wide world .... Let this great wonder of nature remain as it now is. Do nothing to mar its grandeur, sublimity and loveli-ness. You cannot improve on it. But what you can do is to keep it for your children, your children’s children, and all who come after you, as the one great sight which every American should see.” - President Theodore Roosevelt

Despite his enthusiasm, the Grand Canyon took a long time to become a national park. The first bill to create Grand Canyon National Park was introduced in 1882 and again in 1883 and 1886 by Senator Benjamin Harrison. While President, Harrison formed the Grand Canyon Forest Reserve in 1893. Theodore Roosevelt created the Grand Canyon Game Preserve by proclamation in 1906 and Grand Canyon National Monument in 1908. Senate bills to establish a national park were introduced and defeated in 1910 and 1911. The Grand Canyon National Park Act was finally signed by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919.

One of the seven natural wonders of the world, the Grand Canyon is a rocky gorge located in northern Arizona that is 277 miles long, ranges from 4,000 to 6,000 feet deep, and is 18 miles across at its widest point. Created by millions of years of wind and water erosion, the Colorado River carved through layer after layer of sediment. The rocks of the canyon walls are between 250 million years old at the top to a little over 2 billion years old at the bottom.

The grandeur of the Canyon ensnared me in my late teens as my family ventured out west from Buffalo, NY to see this wonder. Since then, I have viewed nature’s work from the rim and from the air. I have hiked down the steep canyon walls a number of times, first to Indian Gardens, then to Phantom Ranch. A three day hiking trip to Havasu Falls with my daughter Danielle many years back has been to date the most beautiful place I have ever seen. I have waded in both Havasu Creek and the mighty Colorado River. Years later, I repeated this trip with my son and wife.

Whether you drive to it, fly over it, ride a mule into it, hike it, take a train to it or float it - just be sure to SEE IT. You’ve made it this far. Go find out why the Grand Canyon is a wonder of the world that everyone should experience.

Welcome to Arizona, the Grand Canyon State.

CELEBRATING FIVE YEARS OF MUSIC

On April 24, 2010, MIM opened its doors as the world’s only global musical instrument museum. For the past five years, the museum located in North Phoenix has been engaging audiences with its extensive collection, dynamic programs and exceptional musical performances.

MIM has already garnered national acclaim and welcomed more than 1.1 million guests. The museum, which is the top-ranked Phoenix attraction according to TripAdvisor, is also listed among the top 25 museums in the country.

Since its opening, MIM has been in constant evolution. Approximately 8,000 square feet of gallery space was added in 2012, bringing the total size of the museum to 200,000 square

feet. There are now more than 360 exhibits where guests can not only view the actual instruments on display, but also see and hear them being played in their original cultural context with rich audiovisual content being displayed on high-definition monitors.

In one of the most popular spaces, the Artist Gallery, guests encounter musical instruments and personal artifacts from Elvis Presley, Pablo

Casals, Joshua Bell, “King” Sunny Adé, Taylor Swift, Johnny Cash and many more. Recent additions include displays showcasing Pavarotti and the Metropolitan Opera, as well as Chinese pipa artist (and Grammy nominee) Wu Man.

MIM’s programs and events also continue to grow. The museum presented its first global music festival in 2014 and MIM Music Theater, which originally hosted about 50 concerts per year, now showcases approximately 200 concerts each year in its acoustically superb space. The museum also expanded its popular “Experience” and “Fam-ily Weekend” programs and hosts about 15 of these highly attended

events each year. MIM invites Valley residents and visitors

to celebrate its fifth anniversary with a week of festivities featuring some of its favorite performers and activities. The celebration will culminate with an “Experience MIM” weekend on April 25 and 26. Visit MIM.org for a full schedule of activities. AZ

Adventurers, thrill-seekers, and bucket listers have been enjoying the exciting tours offered by Desert Dog Adventures

since 1995. Visitors and locals alike find the pic-turesque trails of Arizona both entertaining and awe inspiring, making this a must do attraction when visiting the Grand Canyon State.

Located within 30 minutes of metro Phoe-nix and Scottsdale hotels and resorts, the Tonto National Forest offers explorers a unique insight into the flora and fauna of the Sonoran Desert. Stunning views of Superstition Mountain, Weavers Needle, and Four Peaks may bring on the sudden urge to explore for gold! One of the world’s lushest deserts, Desert Dog Adventures lets you interact with the old west in an impactful and meaningful way.

With a fleet of H1 Hummers, C2 U-Drive Des-ert Buggies, or the air-conditioned H2 Hummer, Desert Dog Adventures offers tours suitable for almost everyone - from singles and couples to families, and from small groups to large corporate events.

Board one of the H1 Hummers, and embark on a trail adventure through rugged desert terrain, shady washes, impressive ridgelines, and rocky creek crossings. As the desert retreats into darkness, a modified H2 Hummer showcases the full color spectrum of a desert sunset and then searches for critters using high-powered roof mounted spotlights. Tours run seven days a week - morning, afternoon, and sunset.

For those wishing to drive, bring your sense of adventure and pilot a two or four seat custom built C2 U-Drive Desert Buggy through stunning desert terrain with challenging creek crossings and ridgelines. Large groups and corporate team builders can combine tours with a delicious BBQ at a secret cookout site on the banks of the Salt River, a peaceful and private setting complete with fire pits and access to restrooms.

Short excursions, combination tours, custom all day expedi-tions, cookouts, and team building - Desert Dog Adventures has a tour just for you!

otSedona and north central ariZona

Varied and vibrant aptly describe the north central region. The famous Red Rocks of Sedona. The bar where Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday drank whiskey. The mining town carved on a hillside. With four seasons and something for everyone, this region begs to be seen and will not soon be forgotten.

POPULAR DESTINATIONS INCLUDE:Sedona – Often called “Red Rock Country” Sedona is a four seasons playground for everyone – whether you’re into history and archaeology; arts and culture; power shopping; outdoor sports; or the spiritual and metaphysical, imagine doing all this in a backdrop of some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. Indeed, this picturesque city is surrounded by red-rock monoliths named Coffeepot, Cathedral and Thunder Mountain. At the north end of the city is the stunning Oak Creek Canyon, a breathtaking chasm that even today, is wildly wonderful. 800-288-7336

Prescott – Just 90 minutes north of Phoenix, “Everybody’s Hometown” is an ideal destination for golfers, outdoor adventure seekers, and western history buffs. From its majestic rock formations at Granite Dells to five area lakes to more than 450 miles of well-groomed hiking, biking and horseback riding trails, Prescott knows no boundaries for exploring the area’s stunning natural beauty. The downtown Courthouse Plaza is Prescott’s historic heart. The plaza is bordered by the famous Whiskey Row, known to have hosted the likes of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday--and still hosts eclectic boutiques, galleries, antique shops, and restaurants. 800-266-7534

Jerome – After the mines closed in 1953 and “King Copper” left town, the population went from a peak of 15,000 in the 1920s to a low of 50 people. The Jerome Historical Society guarded the buildings against vandalism and the elements, the Douglas Mansion became a

State Park in 1965, and Jerome became a National Historic Landmark in 1976. During the 60’s and 70’s, Jerome of-fered a haven for artists. Soon newcomers and Jerome old timers were working together to bring Jerome back to life. Today, Jerome is very much alive with writers, artists, artisans, musi-cians, historians, and families. 928-634-2900 AZ

The incredible array of colors displayed by Sedona’s famous Red Rocks is a direct result of iron oxide in water seeping into sandstone rock formations. Water carrying dissolved iron oxide drains through the porous sandstone and literally paints quartz grains – you guessed it – red!

The Red Rocks vary in origin, color and age. Some were originally sea sediment while others came from blowing sand. You’ll see bright orange, red and tan rocks. The brightest orange rocks are more than 250 million

years old. White and grey rocks are limestone that formed at the bottom of the sea or sandstone that had its red color washed out by water. You may also stumble across basalt extruded by volcanoes in the past.

Sedona and its famous Red Rocks have been in the mak-ing for hundreds of millions of years. There are many ways to enjoy the scenery, just be sure to get out and experience Sedona’s world renowned Red Rocks! And re-member, take only memories, leave only footprints. AZ

One of the natural wonders of the world. The mighty Colorado River. Painted deserts. What more could you ask for? Northern Arizona invites you to indulge your sense of adventure and wonder. Hike it, drive it, ski it, fly over it, float down it – just be sure to get here and

immerse yourself in it.

POPULAR DESTINATIONS INCLUDE:Grand Canyon – The canyon is a spectacular experience at any time of year. Whatever the season... spring, summer, fall, winter... each brings an intimate mood to the splendor of the Grand Canyon that will make your first visit very special. Savor the delicate fragrance of spring wildflowers as you stroll along the Canyon Rim. Enjoy a fresh summer breeze rich with the scent of pine following a brief afternoon thundershower. Discover color that only nature can create in the fall flowers and canyon oaks as they prepare for the coming winter season. See winter clouds hanging heavy over the Canyon after a fresh snow, lifting like a theatre curtain to reveal nature’s newest spec-tacle. In every season the Grand Canyon is a spectacular vision

Williams – While today’s visitors can experience the modern amenities seen in most tourist destinations, they are also invited to personally share in the history and nostalgia of this mountain community. Founded in the late 1800’s by ranchers, railroaders, and lumbermen, remnants of those early days are still visible in the buildings, streets, and neighborhoods of modern-day Williams. Saloons, bordellos, and shops have been brought back to life and visitors can now stroll the brick sidewalks of the historic district, enjoying the sights and sounds of times now nearly gone. 800-863-0646

Flagstaff – Surrounded by natural wonders like the Grand Canyon, Flagstaff offers dozens of inns, a multitude of hotel and motel accommodations, conference and meeting venues, more than 200

restaurants, numerous night spots, and a variety of cultural, historic and scientific attrac-tions. Visitors from all over the world are attracted to the clean mountain air, year-round out-door recreation opportunities, historic downtown charm and our Western legacy of pioneer ranchers, railroad builders and lumbermen. 800-842-7293. ENJOYING THE SOUTH RIMIndividual interests, available time, weather, and health considerations can influence your visit to the South Rim. Use the information available on the web site, www.nps.gov/grca/, to help plan your visit. Once you arrive in the park, read The Guide and talk with the rangers for up-to-the-minute information.

Elevations along the rim vary from 6650 feet (2030 m) at Hermits Rest to more than 7400 feet (2260 m) at Desert View near the East Entrance. Summer tempera-tures are pleasant along the rim, but increase rapidly as you descend into the canyon. Low humidity makes for big temperature differences between day and night. The low humidity and high elevation also means that it is important to drink water frequently.

Afternoon thundershowers are common in July, August, and early September. Windy conditions prevail in April and May. Snow may fall as early as November. Winter snowstorms continue into March.

Many miles of roads along the rim feature numerous pullouts to enjoy the views. Hermit Road to Hermit Rest is open to private vehicles only from December through February. The free shuttle bus system provides a worry-free way to explore the developed areas of the rim.

The Rim Trail winds along the rim for more than 13 miles (21 km), much of it paved and suitable for visitors in wheelchairs. The Greenway, a broad, paved pathway suitable for hikers, bicyclists, and wheelchairs, leads two miles (3 km) from Grand Canyon Visitor Center to Grand Canyon Village. A separate segment heads east from Hermits Rest along the rim. The Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails descend steeply into the canyon.

Rangers present programs—walks, talks, and evening presentations—throughout the year. All activities are free. Check in The Guide for programs during your stay.

VISITOR CENTERSThe National Park Service staffs several visitor centers on the South Rim. All are open every day of the year; hours vary seasonally.

Grand Canyon Visitor CenterLocated near Mather PointThe largest visitor center on the South Rim is a good stop for an introduction to Grand Canyon and for as-sistance in planning your visit.

A recent camping trip introduced me to the Lost Dutchman State Park in Apache Junction. Spend enough time in Arizona, and you’re bound to get gold fever. I’ve got it bad! Dad made me watch the old movie Lust For Gold starring Glenn Ford. It didn’t help. So grab your gold pan and shovel, arrange for a grub stake, buy a map, and saddle up your mule as I tell you about the Grand Canyon state’s most famous gold mine story - the Lost Dutchman.

The Superstition Mountains have been a source of mystery and legend since early times. The area is dotted with ancient cliff dwellings and caves, many showing signs of former habitation by a number of different Native American groups, up until the 1800’s. Even the name is inspired by Pima Indian legends.

During the 1840’s, the Peralta family of northern Mexico supposedly developed a rich gold mine in the Superstitions. Ac-cording to legend, an Apache ambush ended the family’s last expedition, and the gold remained in the area. In the 1870’s, Jacob Waltz (“the Dutchman”) was said to have located the mine through the aid of the Peralta descendant. Waltz and his partner, Jacob Weiser, worked in the mine and allegedly hid one or more caches of gold in the Superstitions. Most stories place the gold in the vicinity of Weaver’s Needle (photo above).

After Waltz’s death in 1891, several people attempted to seek out the Lost Dutchman’s Mine, all without luck. Later searchers have sometimes met with foul play or even death, contributing to the superstition and legend of these mountains.

The legend of the “lost mine” has been fueled by a number of people who were supposed to have known the mine’s location or even worked it. Maps have surfaced over the years, only to become lost or misplaced.

If your search for the treasure proves as fruitless as mine, you’ll be happy to know there’s a lot to do in and around the park. Named after the fabled lost gold mine, this park is located in the Sonoran Desert at an elevation of 2000 feet. The Lost Dutchman State Park offers a variety of hiking trails, nature trails, 70 regular camp-sites, picnic facilities, and special programs throughout the year. The park is located 5 miles north of Apache Junction, off of AZ 88 (the old Apache Trail), at the base of the Superstition Mountains and is open 365 days a year. More information, photos, and videos can be found at http://azstateparks.com/parks/lodu/. AZ

Q. Where can I take a photography lesson on my camera/smart phone so I can capture these terrific sunsets, landscapes, birds, festivals etc. ?

A. A picture is sometimes worth infinitely more than a thousand words. Guests always want to live in the moment when on vacation and yet savor it for years to come. It is a way to revisit an intense slice of life taken in one hundredth of a second! I like Eudora Welty’s take: “A good photograph keeps time from running away.”

One way to improve your “point and shoot game” or get a few tips on your smart phone camera capabilities in Southern Arizona [to best capture the Mariachi Conference and ballet folklorico, April 8-10 or the Southeast Arizona Wine Growers Wine/Musical Festival in Elgin April 18-19] is to take an Artful Photography lesson at Miraval Arizona Resort and Spa to learn about ambient light and compositional elements while you are their guest. Day guests may also register for a class here (these resort rates start at $299.) Some guests may wish to photograph wildlife, others want to capture the macro shot of a barrel cactus in bloom, or that magical moment at sunset when “the-mountains-are-pink- so-it’s-time-for-a-drink” as the margarita chorus goes. More resorts are offering such courses to meet a growing demand from guests who want to hone their hobbies.

Central Arizona is home to Cheyenne Rouse acclaimed photographer and contributor to Outdoor Photographer Magazine. Her Sedona Workshop takes you to one of the most scenic locations in the great American Southwest where you will photograph a rarely visited site of Indian ruins while studying the technical aspects of composition. Fees average $650 per day which can include a maximum of six people. She also offers classes in “How to Turn Your Photos Into Fine Art---HDR Computer Class.” www.cheyennerouse.com. If aerial pho-tography is something you’d like to try your hand at, then Red Rock Helicopter Tours offers three packages: Bear Wallow Run is a 15-minute sampler tour over the immense beauty of Bear Wallow Canyon where wildlife is often sighted $99; Ancient’s Way Tour goes deep into Secret Canyon and into the outback of Rattlesnake Mesa where you will explore the Sinaguan cliff dwellings- 20 min-utes for $149; or Hog Wild for a combination of the other packages 35 minutes for $199 complete with a video camera recording courtesy of your tour to add to your own memorable airborn photos! www.sedonaairtours.com Another approach to landscape photography could be a tour of galleries in Scottsdale to school you eye on approach and perspective. You are in one of the most impor-

tant art markets in the country showing the most exciting artists in all genres when you walk along Main Street and Marshall Way. To fully enjoy this stroll to trolley excursion, many call upon expe-rienced guide Ace Bailey and her staff at Ultimate Art & Culture Tours for an insider’s knowledgable commentary. www.ultimatearttours.com Elevate your appreciation of landscape pho-tography with a free visit to pioneering frontier photographers Emery and Ellsworth Kolb’s Studio, a national historic landmark built on the edge of grandeur. You’ll find inspiration at the Kolb Studio located at the Grand Canyon’s South Rim in Northern Arizona by the Bright Angel Trailhead, built in 1904 with its dark room over an abandoned mine shaft. The Kolb family promoted tourism while operating a successful commercial photography studio here for 75 years giving America some of its most iconic photographs of this national park. The daredevil brothers produced some of the earliest photos of the Canyon’s inner recesses and harsh winters. Believed to be most important of their photo-graphic legacies are the myriad photos taken of the first tourists riding mules down the steep de-scent of Bright Angel Trail www.grandcanyon.org While planning a trip to this renowned park, you may wish to take a seasonal photography course offered by it educational arm, the Grand Canyon Field Institute. Courses average 2 days, $500 and some level 1 hiking. [email protected] AZ
