“Here I Am, Send ME” Relay Race

The purpose of this event is to: nurture teamwork, demonstrate pathfinder skills, exer-

cise mental and physical abilities, and finish with a tower where one will be ready to

hear God’s voice.

This activity is a relay where pathfinder clubs will race to finish the fastest. The relay

consists of four stations. All listed materials used for this event MUST be provided

by each club.

A special award will be awarded for the best Hour Glass Tower built.

Station 1. Hula Hoop Chain Walk

In this station, ALL club pathfinders will hold hands in a straight line.

The first pathfinder in line will squeeze through the hula hoop passing it to the next

pathfinder without breaking handhold. When the second pathfinder in line has

successfully transferred the hula hoop, the first pathfinder in line will break hand-

hold and join hands with the last pathfinder in line. Repeat this process until the

hula hoop reaches the finish line. Proceed to the next station.

Materials needed:

Hula Hoop

Note: If handhold is broken “during the hula hoop transfer” the team will need to re-

start from the beginning!

Station 2: The Swing

In this station, pathfinders will build a swing. 4 pathfinders (2 at each end) will carry

one pathfinder to the finish line without touching the ground. At the finish line, 4

different pathfinders will carry back a new pathfinder to the starting line.

Continue to the next station when the team has successfully reached the starting line.

Suggested Method: Tie a clove hitch knot to the 6ft wooden rod. Wrap a minimum

of two loops around the sitting board. Finish with a clove hitch back at the wood-

en rod. Repeat this process to attach the other side of the board to the 6ft wooden

rod.

Material Needed:

2 pieces of approximately 12 foot length sash cord (adjust as needed)

Sitting board that accommodates a pathfinder

6 foot wooden pole

Note: If the pathfinder on the swing touches the ground or the swing breaks in the pro-

cess, pathfinders will need to restart this station from the beginning.

Station 3: Worm-Walk.

In this station, 2 pathfinders will leap together as a unit to the finish line. The leading

pathfinder will hold onto a board fastened by a rope while stepping on another

board behind him/her. The trailing pathfinder will hold on to the leading path-

finder’s foot board while stepping on another board behind him/her. Motion

needs to be performed without letting go of the boards.

Material Needed:

3 flat wooden boards (3ft long-recommended; adjust as needed) with attached

rope from end to end.

Secure rope ends using metal strips and screws (recommended)

Station 4: Grand Finale: Hour Glass Tower!

The tower is constructed from two large pyramids interlocked together. It must be

built on its side then raised vertically, if 6ft or longer rods are used. (Time limit:

40min; please practice!!)

Material needed:

6 x wooden rods; 6ft long- (for 2 tripods)

6 x wooden rods; 4ft long [for horizontal base (3) and handrail(3)]

2 x wooden rods; 4ft long- (platform)

6 x wooden rods; 1-3ft long- (platform)

7-10 x 1ft wooden rods- (ladder)

21 x lashing lengths rope

2 x 12ft rope- (ladder)

2 x 5ft rope- (platform)

Stuffed animal dressed in pathfinder gear

6 x 5ft long rope to secure/adjust tripod apex (Optional)

3 x 10ft long guy lines and 3 stakes for additional tower stability (Optional)

Method:

Using three 6ft rods and a Tripod Lashing, build a tripod.

Using square lashings, fix three 4ft rods across the butt ends.

This is the base unit – lay it on its side. (see figure a)

Prepare a second tripod with 3 more 6ft rods.

Page 6: Arizona Pathfinder Fair - AZSDAYouth · FAIR FEE $2 per person - covers vehicle entrance fee. ... this will form the handrail ( see figure b) ... Place a Stuffed Animal dressed in

Feed one leg of the tripod through the apex of the base unit. Complete the top unit

by lashing 3 x 4ft rods close to the butt ends using square lashings – this will form the

handrail ( see figure b)

Once the frames have been positioned correctly, lash the main rods together using

square lashings. Note: although the rods cross at an acute angle, you must use a

square lashing.

*Optional: Add additional strength by lashing the apex of each tripod to the opposite

main rods using a round turn and two half hitches. ( see figure c) Raise tower upright Once the tower is upright, check that the top is level. Lower it again and make any

necessary adjustments. Platform: While the tower is horizontal, fit the platform by lashing 2 x 4ft rods approximately

1ft below the handrail using square lashings

Lash 6 x 1-3ft rods across the 4ft rods. Make a clove hitch at the beginning of each

4ft rod to secure rope. Then loop the rope around once on each 1-3ft rod; ending it

with a clove hitch at the opposite end of 4ft rod.

Ladder:

Secure rope to the platform using a clove hitch knot. Then, loop the rope around

once on the end of each of the 1ft wooden rods. ( Use 7-10 rods to make the ladder)

Secure the end of the ladder by tying a clove hitch to the horizontal rod on the base

of the tower.

Raise the tower.

Place a Stuffed Animal dressed in Pathfinder club gear or anything with this Fair’s

Theme- on the top of the platform.

Relay completed: Good Job!
