school history. The last time A-State won at

Louisiana-Lafayette it was competing as an

NCAA Division I independent, defeating the

Ragin’ Cajuns 20-7 in 1992.

FAMILIAR FOE: While Arkansas State and

Louisiana-Lafayette have both played as

members of the Sun Belt Conference since

the league’s inaugural football season in

2001, it is not the first time the two teams have

shared a league. The Red Wolves and Ragin’

Cajuns were both members of the Big West

Conference from 1993 to 1995 and the South-

land Conference from 1971 to 1981.

THE LAST TIME vs. THE RAGIN’ CAJUNS

(Jonesboro, Ark. - Nov. 7, 2009): Facing a

21-3 deficit, then-freshman quarterback Ryan

Aplin came off the bench in the third quarter to

rally the Arkansas State Red Wolves to within

21-18, but a late interception by Louisiana-

Lafayette's Lance Kelley ended ASU's final

drive and the Ragin' Cajuns held on for the

21-18 Sun Belt Conference victory at ASU

Stadium.

With the Red Wolves trailing 21-3, Aplin di-

rected a 16-play, 68-yard drive that ended

with senior tailback Reggie Arnold's two-yard

touchdown run with 12:39 remaining to cut

the Cajun lead to 21-10.

Just over two minutes later, Aplin had the

Red Wolves in the end zone again when he

hooked up with freshman wideout Taylor

Stockemer on a 64-yard completion to set up

a five-yard scoring run from Arnold. Aplin

scrambled in for the two-point conversion to

put the Red Wolves within a field goal at 21-

18 with 10:10 remaining.

Arkansas State took over again at their own

33 with 5:07 to play and drove to the Ragin'

Cajun 39 before Kelley stepped in front of

Aplin's pass for the interception with 2:52 re-

maining, and ULL was able to run out the

clock to preserve the win.

The Cajuns jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the

game, getting a 1-yard touchdown run from

quarterback Blaine Gautier in the first quarter

and a seven-yard scoring run from quarter-

back Chris Masson with just over three min-

utes remaining in the half.

Arkansas State got on the board with a 36-

yard field goal from senior Josh Arauco with

36 seconds to play before halftime to make it

14-3 at the break.

2010 ARKANSAS STATE FOOTBALL NOTES: GAME 2 AT louisiana - SEPT. 11, 2010Louisiana-Lafayette extended its lead to 21-

3 when Masson scored on a two-yard run with

5:48 to play in the third.

Aplin led the ASU offense on the day with

154 yards, completing 8-of-14 passes for 147

yards while rushing for seven more. Senior

cornerback Cordarious Mingo notched a ca-

reer-high nine tackles to lead the ASU de-

fense.

JENNINGS HONORED: Senior safety M.D.

Jennings was named the Sun Belt Confer-

ence Defensive Player of the Week on Mon-

day for his performance against

nationally-ranked Auburn. Jennings posted

double-figure tackles (11), including a career-

high 1.5 tackles for loss, in a game for the

fourth time of his career. He also recorded his

second career forced fumble, fourth fumble

recovery of his career and his third career

sack.

UNBUCKLE THE BELT: ASU is 6-3 all-time

and 5-3 under head coach Steve Roberts in

Sun Belt Conference openers. The Red

Wolves fell to Troy 30-27 in their first league

game last season, a year after defeating Mid-

dle Tennessee 31-14 in their conference

opener. ASU will play Louisiana in its SBC

opener for the first time ever.

EARLY START TO CONFERENCE PLAY:

Prior to this season, the earliest A-State had

ever played a Sun Belt Conference opponent

was the third game of the season (Troy in

2009). A-State has not played three of its first

four games against league foes since the

1995 season when it was a member of the Big

West Conference. ASU’s next three games

include outings against two of the top four

teams in the conference’s preseason coaches

poll (UL Lafayette, 4th; Troy, 2nd). ASU is in-

volved in the only Sun Belt Conference

games being played both this week and next,

facing UL Saturday and ULM on Sept. 18.

AN ARKANSAS STATE VICTORY WOULD .

. . give A-State its first road victory over

Louisiana-Lafayette in 18 years . . . improve

A-State’s record in Sun Belt Conference

openers to 7-3 . . . put ASU up one confer-

ence victory over every league opponent . . .

give ASU its third consecutive Sun Belt Con-

ference victory dating back to last season.

NEW OFFENSE SHINES: Arkansas State’s

new offense put up some impressive numbers

in the Red Wolves’ season debut against na-

tionally-ranked Auburn last week. ASU hung

26 points on the Tigers, its second most

against a top-25 opponent since 2002, and

piled up 366 yards of total offense that was

the third highest among all SBC teams last

week.

PASSING GRADE: A-State posted 323

passing yards against Auburn, the 10th most

in school history and the most recorded by an

ASU team since recording a school-record

418 against Memphis in 2004. The Red

Wolves also attempted 49 passes that tied the

fourth most in school history, while its 33 com-

pletions fell only one short of the school

record 34 against Jacksonville State in 1995.

IN THE ZONE: The Arkansas State offense

was perfect in the red zone during its first

game, scoring on all four opportunities

against Auburn. ASU scored three touch-

downs and kicked one field goal to end the

game perfect in those situations.

TACKLE BOX: Eleven ASU players either

tied or topped their career high for tackles in a

game last week against Auburn. While five of

those players were competing in their first

game as an ASU player, six were returning

players. Among the six returning players

APLIN PUTS UP CAREER-BEST NUM-

BERS: Ryan Aplin posted the best passing

numbers of his young career against No. 22

Auburn. The sophomore quarterback com-

pleted 28-of-42 passes for 278 yards, all ca-

reer highs, and one touchdown to help lead

Arkansas State to 366 yards of total offense.

Aplin’s 28 completions tied the third most in

school history for a single game and are the

most by an ASU quarterback since 2004. He

completed a 61-yard pass, the second longest

of his career, to set up his 10-yard touchdown

pass that gave ASU a 6-0 lead. He directed

scoring drives that started from ASU’s 18, 26

and 45 yard lines, as well as Auburn’s 27.

IT’S GOOD: Playing in his first collegiate

game, true freshman kicker Brian Davis ac-

counted for a team-high eight points against

No. 22 Auburn. Davis was successful on both

his field goal attempts and made 2-of-3 extra

points, his only miss getting blocked. Davis’

first field goal was from 26 yards out and

pulled ASU within 28-16 of the Tigers, while

his final field goal from 41 yards brought

ASU’s total score to 26 points.

NEW FACES: Twenty-one players competed

in their first career game at A-State last week

at Auburn, including three true freshmen,

eight redshirt freshmen, two sophomores, six

junior-college transfers (all juniors) and two

juniors . . . . . Additionally, six players started

their first career game at ASU, including

Dorvus Woods (DL), Justin Robertson (DE),

Walter Moody (CB), Darron Edwards (CB)

and Tausean Holmes (DB) on defense and

Anthony Robinson (WR) on offense . . . . . .

ASU had at least one player attempt his first

career punt (Neely Sullivent and Dean Ger-

icke), first career kickoff (Bobby Zalud) and

first career extra point and field goal (Brian

Davis). Tausean Holmes, Roderick Hall and

Dwayne Frampton all returned their first ca-

reer kicks and/or punts as well.

96th SEASON UNDER WAY: Arkansas

State kicked off its 96th season of football last

Saturday. ASU holds a 412-444-37 record

since the inaugural 1911 season and has

2010 ARKANSAS STATE FOOTBALL NOTES: GAME 2 AT louisiana - SEPT. 11, 2010

Not long after leading

Arkansas State to the 2005

Sun Belt Conference cham-

pionship and New Orleans

Bowl, head coach Steve

Roberts continues to make

ASU a dominant force in

the Sun Belt Conference

and has ASU on track for

continued success in the

upcoming years.

When the 2005 Sun

Belt Conference Coach of

the Year took over the pro-

gram in December 2001, he

impressed everyone with

his wide-eyed enthusiasm

and limitless energy. And, most of all, they believed that Roberts

would bring success to the ASU football program. Roberts has been

the driving force behind ASU’s recent success, leading the football

program to its most victories over an eight-year span since 1985-92.

Roberts came to Arkansas State University and brought with

him a fresh enthusiasm, energy, and an “I Will” philosophy that has

been adopted by everyone associated with the program.

“I Will” became the rallying cry as Roberts and his staff charged

ahead through a grueling 13-game schedule in 13 weeks with no

open date in his inaugural season and came within 11 points of win-

ning the Sun Belt Conference championship and playing in the Sun

Belt Conference prize—the New Orleans Bowl.

ASU ended the season with a record of 6-7 and finished third

in the league rankings. That tied the most wins since rejoining Divi-

sion I-A in 1992. The Red Wolves finished in the top ten turnarounds

by Division I-A football schools for improving football records after

finishing 2-9 in 2001.

Under Roberts’ direction, ASU continues to add to the achieve-

ments that began upon his arrival. Not only did ASU represent the

Sun Belt Conference in the 2005 New Orleans Bowl, it claimed its

first league championship since 1986. Arkansas State went unde-

feated at home that season and is now 29-10 all-time at ASU Sta-

dium under Roberts. The bowl appearance was ASU’s first since

playing in the 1970 Pecan Bowl.

ASU has been bowl eligible three of the last five seasons and

the last four Roberts’ coached teams backed up the 2005 Sun Belt

championship with non-conference victories over teams such as

Army, Memphis, SMU and Texas A&M. The Red Wolves’ 2008 win

over the Aggies was one of the biggest wins in school history as

ASU picked up its first victory over a BCS conference school since

joining the FBS.

The Red Wolves have finished among the top three teams in

the Sun Belt Conference four times, but ASU has also been com-

petitive during Roberts’ tenure against the nation’s elite teams. ASU

fell to then-ranked No. 25 Memphis by just 12 points in 2004, No. 4

Texas by eight points in 2007 and No. 13 Iowa by three points in

2009.

In addition to the 2002 and 2008 teams, the 2005 and 2006

squads both posted six wins to mark the first time since the 1986

and 1987 seasons the Red Wolves recorded at least six victories in

back-to-back seasons. Roberts already holds the fifth most wins

among ASU’s 26 all-time head and needs just 12 more victories to

move into second on the list.

The 2008 Roberts’ coached team holds the all-time school

record for single-season offense and the ASU defense has ranked

No. 1 or No. 2 in the Sun Belt Conference each of the last four sea-

sons.

Over the last eight years, ASU has picked up 70 all-conference

selections, including at least 10 four of the last five years. ASU had

11 players named all-conference in 2008, its most ever as a mem-

ber of the SBC. The Red Wolves placed 10 players on the list in

2002, 2005 and 2006, and nine in 2007.

Roberts has coached a Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the

Year, Offensive Player of the Year, two Defensive Player of the Year

winners and a Newcomer of the Year.

The Red Wolves have had four NFL draft picks under Roberts,

including David Johnson in 2009, Tyrell Johnson in 2008, Oren

O’Neal in 2007 and Corey Williams in 2004. Johnson was a second-

round selection and the third highest drafted player in ASU history.

Alex Carrington, the 2008 Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of

the Year, is also expected by many experts to be a high draft selec-

tion in 2010. Additonally, 13 ASU players have either been drafted

or signed NFL free agent contracts since Roberts’ first season in

2002.

With five Sun Belt Conference Team Academic Awards,

Roberts has made academics a priority as well for the Red Wolves.

ASU consistently places a large number of players on the ASU Ath-

letic Director’s Honor Roll and Sun Belt Conference Academic

Honor Roll. The most recent ASU AD’s Honor Roll saw 45 football

players make the list.

Attendance has show significant improvement during the

Roberts era. ASU has drawn a crowd of over 20,000 in 15 games

all-time at ASU Stadium and six of those have come over the last

nine games. Of those 15 games, 11 have been played with Roberts

as head coach.

A stadium-record crowd was of 30,427 was on hand to watch

ASU play Memphis in 2004, and ASU set the best average atten-

dance mark of 21,105 in 2008.

During his tenure, ASU has upgraded its facilities with a new

training room, weight room, locker room, recruiting room and state-

of-the-art ProGreen turf on the field.

Roberts was named Arkansas State’s 26th head football coach

on December 21, 2001, to bring full circle his coaching odyssey from

his home state through Louisiana and back. But, the trek has been

a successful one, including an 8-4 record and national ranking in

Division I-AA in 2000 at Northwestern (La.) State.

Roberts spent two seasons at NSU, where he and his staff and

team took on a tough schedule which included a 27-24 overtime

upset at TCU. While at NSU, Roberts was a finalist for the Eddie

Robinson National Coach of the Year Award. Prior to going to NSU,

Roberts served as the head coach and defensive coordinator at

Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia from 1994-99. While

there, his 1997 team won the Gulf South Championship, earning

him Gulf South Coach of the Year honors. The Muleriders finished

with a cumulative record of 26-5 from 1997-99, including 9-1 in

1999, 8-2 in 1998 and 9-2 in 1997.

During that span, his teams enjoyed top conference rankings in

scoring offense, scoring defense, total offense and total defense.

At SAU, he also served as the defensive secondary coach and re-

cruiting coordinator from 1990-94 before being named head coach.

Academically, his program ranked first in academic achievements

in the Gulf South Conference three seasons.

Roberts, an avid fisherman, graduated from Robinson High

School in Little Rock. A 1987 graduate of Ouachita Baptist Univer-

sity, where he was an Academic All-American, Roberts received his

masters from SAU in 1989. He and his wife Sherri have one daugh-

ter – Abby (14).

GAME 1

AUBURN, Ala. (09/04/10) - Arkansas State sophomore quarterback Ryan

Aplin passed for 278 yards and a touchdown, but the 22nd-ranked Auburn

Tigers countered with 363 yards of total offense and five total scores from

junior quarterback Cameron Newton and defeated the Red Wolves 52-26

before a crowd of 83,441 at Jordan-Hare Stadium in the season opener for

both teams.

Aplin connected on 28 of his 42 passes on the night to seven receivers,

with junior wide receiver Dwayne Frampton hauling in eight passes for 74

yards and a touchdown, and safety M.D. Jennings led the ASU defense with

11 tackles, including two for loss, one forced fumble and one fumble recov-

ery.

Arkansas State got on the board first when Aplin passed complete across

the middle to Frampton from 10 yards out for a Red Wolves touchdown at

the 5:18 mark of the first quarter. The scoring strike was set up when Aplin

found wide receiver Allen Muse alone down the right sideline for a 61-yard

Senior safety M.D. Jennings (below)

was named the Sun Belt Conference

Defensive Player of the Week follow-

ing the Auburn game after recording a

team-high 11 tackles, 1.5 tackles for

loss, one sack, a forced fumble and a

fumble recovery against the Tigers.

gain on the first play of the drive, which covered 82 yards in six plays.

Auburn answered with a six-play 58-yard drive on its next possession that

ended with a three-yard touchdown run from senior wideout Kodi Burns with

1:51 to go in the first quarter. Senior Wes Bynum added the extra point for

the Tigers, giving Auburn a 7-6 lead after the extra point attempt following

ASU's touchdown was no good.

Less than a minute later, Auburn made it 14-6 when Newton passed com-

plete for a 36-yard touchdown to senior running back Mario Fannin with one

minute to play in the opening quarter.

Auburn added a two-yard touchdown run from Newton with 9:43 remain-

ing in the second quarter to stretch its lead to 21-6, but the Red Wolves an-

swered with a 55-yard drive that ended with junior running back Jermaine

Robertson's 13-yard touchdown run with 6:46 to go in the first half.

The Tigers used the big play to put two more touchdowns on the board be-

fore the break, getting a 48-yard scoring pass from Newton to wide receiver

Quindarius Carr and a 71-yard

touchdown run from Newton. A 26-

yard field goal from ASU freshman

Bryan Davis following Auburn's

Newton-to-Carr touchdown left the

Tigers with a 35-16 lead at the

break.

Arkansas State's Nick Nelms re-

covered an Auburn fumble on the

second half kickoff to set up an

Arkansas State touchdown that

pulled the Red Wolves trimmed the

deficit 35-23. Nelms' recovery set

up the Red Wolves offense at the

Auburn 27, and ASU needed just

five plays to find the end zone, scor-

ing on an eight-yard touchdown run

from junior running back Derek

Lawson.

Auburn answered with a 38-yard

touchdown pass from Newton to

Fannin and a 24-yard field goal

from Bynum on the final play of the

third quarter to take a 45-23 lead

into the final period of play.

Auburn's final score came on a

two-yard touchdown run from fresh-

man Michael Dyer midway through

the fourth, and Davis added a 41-

yard field goal for the Red Wolves

with 4:16 remaining in the game to

set the final score at 52-26.

In addition to the numbers from

Aplin and Frampton, the Red

Wolves also got 80 yards on four

catches from Muse and six catches

for 58 yards from sophomore Taylor

Stockemer. Lawson tallied 45 yards
