Arlington Mill Senior Center is excited to welcome a group from the United States Army Band Trio for a special performance on Tuesday, August 15 at 11am. This will be the first performance with Arlington County for the 55+ group. The trio is from the Army Band’s Pershing’s Own, and incorporates Music Therapy into the performance with audience discussion. If interested in attending, please call the main center line to pre-register.
Arlington Mill Senior Center recently launched a new program entitled “Knitting at Night” , a social group that welcomes anyone interested in crochet, knitting, or any other needle craft. There are many knitting groups throughout the county, however none of them meet in the evening. Group members range from beginner to experienced, and volunteer Kim Luberto is happy to welcome and assist any newcomers. The group started strong on Thursday, July 5 with about 5 members, and hopes to grow. The group meets every Thursday evening at 6:30pm.
Did you know? Arlington Mill is the new temporary home for a beginner line dancing class! Every Tuesday at 12:30pm, you can join in on the fun of line dancing to popular tunes. The class is free and open to walk-ins, and will continue to be held through-out the end of the Summer.
Don’t miss a great weekend event, Exposed: Artists and Crafters, happening Saturday, August 12, 10am-2pm. This event will fea-ture artwork from the Crafters group that meets every Wednes-day here at Arlington Mill.
Check it Out! The photo below was taken by Luisa Robinson, member to the Arlington Mill Photo Interest Group. Throughout the year, members of the group take photo tours of various places throughout the area. This one was taken after a tour of the U.S. Botanical Garden. The group is currently on break for the sum-mer, but looks forward to returning in September.

Volunteer SpotlightIf you are a frequent visitor of Ar-lington Mill Senior Center, then there is a likely chance you have seen this man. His name is Ala-ric Radosh, and he is one of the many great volunteers that make the programs at Arlington Mill pos-sible. Whether it be on the pickle-ball courts or in the senior lounge meeting with fellow seniors, Alaric is dedicating his time each week to help improve the lives of seniors.
Alaric originally began his inter-est in volunteering after becoming a regular member of the pickleball players of Arlington Mill. As a rel-atively new player himself, Alaric realized the need to welcome new pickleball players to the center, and create a comfortable atmosphere for players to start. Since then, Ala-ric has been the critical player in
establishing what is now known as “Absolute Beginner Pickleball Wel-coming Hour” an hour of exactly that. During this time, Alaric provides individual support to new players by teaching basics like rules of the game, where to stand, and how to score.
“I really enjoy the opportunity to help
others”
You can find Alaric in the Ar-lington Mill Gymnasium every Monday morning at 9am. Many members have approached cen-ter staff and reported how thank-ful they are for this program.
While Alaric enjoys both teaching and playing pickleball, thats not the only program he has helped
implement. Alaric also dedicates his time every Thursday to assist seniors one-to-one with comput-er help. Whether a senior is having difficulty arranging their apps on their iphone, sending emails or set-ting up a facebook account, Alaric offers his advice and help free of charge. “This was such a relief, I’m so glad Alaric was able to help me take care of this” reported a senior. “He is so patient” reports another.
No matter what capacity, we are very thankful for all our volunteers here at Arlington Mill, because without them, we would not be able to of-fer such quality programs as these.
If your interested in scheduling an computer help apt. or would like more information on the welcom-ing hour, please call the center line.
Are you interested in becoming a volunteer? There are many oppor-tunities available here at Arlington Mill. Whether you are interested in leading a program, or would just like to roll up your sleeves and help out, please be sure to contact Nick En-glund, Center Director to express your interest.
We are now taking submissions for stories and articles for “The Mill” Se-nior Newsletter. Stories can include happenings in Arlington County, Parks and Recreation, Senior Pro-grams, and activities at Arlington Mill. If you would like to be given a specific story, we are happy to share ideas. For more information, please call (703) 228-7369.

Most of the responses I get after describing the sport is, “Sounds cool.” Yes, yes it is cool.
Please join me on Friday, August 4 at 11am for a cup of coffee and some pickleball. I seldom get an op-portunity to play, so I will very much appreciate some doubles at random with you all for a few hours. All levels are welcome (everyone knows I’m a beginner) and open play will start at 12:30pm. See you there!
-Nick Englund, Center Director
“What is pickleball!?” As the center director of Arling-ton Mill, it seams I am asked this question constantly. It usually turns up when I am describing what I do to friends and family. “What is that?” they ask. “Well,” I respond, “Its a lot like tennis, but much more fun.”
