Dear Readers:This week, the Arlington Connection
turns over its pages to the youth and stu-dents.
We asked principals and teachers fromarea schools to encourage students to con-tribute their words, pictures and photos forour annual Children’s Issue.
The response as always was enormous. While we were unable to publish every piecewe received, we did our best to put togethera paper with a fair sampling of the submit-ted stories, poems, drawings, paintings, photographs and other works of art.
We appreciate the extra effort made byschool staff to gather the materials duringtheir busy time leading up to the holidays. We’d also like to encourage both schools andparents to mark their 2010 calendars forearly December, the deadline for submis-sions for next year’s Children’s Connection. Please keep us in mind as your childrencontinue to create spectacular works of artand inspiring pieces of writing in the com-ing year.
The children’s issue is only a part of ouryear-round commitment to cover educationand our local schools. As always, the Con-nection welcomes letters to the editor, storyideas, calendar listings and notices of localevents from our readers. Photos and othersubmissions about special events at schoolsare especially welcome for our weeklyschools pages.
Our preferred method for material is e-mail, which should be sent [email protected], butyou can reach us by mail at 1606 KingStreet, Alexandria, VA 22314 or call 703-778-9415 with any questions.

My First CandyShop Experience
Have you ever known what a kid’shaven is? Here’s a hint. You go andget vividly colored bags full ofsweets. No, it’s not 7-11. It’s a candyshop! When I went to WilliamsburgI went to one candy shop calledWythe Candy Shop.
When I stepped inside the warmsweet air caught my attention. Anold fashioned bell announced myarrival with a loud, alarmingBRRIINNG! As I stepped inside, allthe different sounds and smells hitme. There was talking, laughing, begging and the smells of fudge, caramel apples, gummy animalsand many more sweets being made. When I scanned the rows for deli-cious goodies to fill my aqua bluecandy bag, I saw, Twizzlers, AirHeads, M&M’s, Gummies, JellyBellys, Razzle Dazzles, Bottle Capsand many more. It was hard to pick.I wanted EVERYTHING! So, I justclosed my eyes, spun around andended up with a headache and withone pound of sweets. When I wentto the counter to pay, the registerlady gave me a free sample of theirchocolate cherry fudge. Mmm!Yummy!
After that taste I thought — whatthe heck, make it more than onepound of candy. The delicioushomemade fudge was warm andgooey and chocolaty and had cherrygoo inside of it. It felt like heavento my hungry belly. Then, when Ileft the shop, all my relatives werechowing down on candy or waitingfor me on the bench where it shadedthem from the hot, boiling sun. Iliked it better inside the candy ha-ven. I got outside, and all my cous-ins and I had a “candy munchingcontest.”
P.S. My cousins and I all hadstomachaches from eating candytoo fast.

Diving BoardSplash! I watched as my friends dove
off the diving board in terror. I was infourth grade. In January, my class wentto Wakefield High School pool for aweek to learn how to swim. I was soexcited because I had never been to thepool with my friends in my class. Allweek I was so happy until Friday.
Friday was a terrible day for me.I felt like it was the end of the world.
I need to jump off the diving board. Iwas so scared because I never jumpedoff the gigantic diving board. I onlywent off the little one. Then it cametime to go off the big one. When myturn came, I got on the diving boardand I heard the girls in line shout, “GoMartha, Go Martha!”
I got the goose bumps.I jumped and — SPLASH! I felt like
water was in my nose, and I thoughtI’d never be able to breathe normallyagain. Then I swam all the way to thestairs. Everyone cheered. Then I wentagain one more time. I would have goneagain but it was free time and I had togo to the shallow end.
This experience taught me that mostthings aren’t as scary as they seem, sotry even if you’re afraid.

My Big SurpriseFinally I’ve got it. I rush to my mom’s
bedroom and take it out from under thebed. My mom has just given me per-mission to take her $100 Lego set inexchange for finding her $400 watchthat she lost a month ago.
The Lego set is awesome. I rip openthe box and tear apart the bags hold-ing the Legos. I felt like a king. My newLego Chewbacca is shiny and dark tan.I look over all the pieces, a bow andarrow, Han Solo and R2-D2. They smellnew and plasticy.
My brother rushes to my side. My eyesstop looking at the pieces and at mybrother.
“My first chewie!”“Quiet, go away, it’s mine,” I say, an-
noyed.“He’s mine too,” my brother yells.“Fine,” I say. That day, I put together a catapult and
two speeders. The next day, I do the rest— a base and little walker thing and aglider. I mount the pieces on a down-stairs shelf. My favorite is the Ewok. Ibring down the speeders to play withand then put them up and take downthe other stuff. I then put it back andgo to sleep. It is really hard to sleepbecause of all the excitement. I was soglad I just played and played with it.
It’s good to know that moms some-times give good rewards for helpingthem.

SnowIt all started when we were put-
ting up the Christmas tree. All ofa sudden, my mom was calling tome and yelling, “It’s snowing!” Iwas so excited that I jumped upand down. I wanted to see what itwas like in the back yard. But I de-cided to see if my dad would cometoo. We quickly pulled on our coatsand hats, and were out the door.We made a snowman with a nosemade out of a stone. Then we builta house out of snow too. Weplayed house in the house. Whenwe were totally exhausted, weended the day with mugs of hotchocolate!

City Museum isAwesome
There’s a place in St. Louis, Mis-souri, that’s out of this world. It iscalled the City Museum. There iseven a place on the roof you cango up to. The part that was reallycool was the seven-story tall slide. It was curly and twisty. It took metwo whole minutes to get down. There was another part that waslike a maze. Once I got in, it was

hard to get out. You can go in thefloor, through a tunnel, and comeout in the maze. Outside, therewas a ball pit that was seven feetdeep! The good thing was thatthere was a ladder on the side ofit, so I could climb out. For lunchwe went across the street to CrownCandy! I got a turkey and meltedcheese sandwich and a vanillashake. (It was great that we gotbracelets at the City Museum, sowe could go back for free and havesome more fun.) It was awesome!

Natural PerfectionBy Chloe Dillon
Have you ever loved someone somuch you would give them everythingeven though if you asked them the samething they would give you nothing. When you look at them the aspects oftheir body and features it looks likeNatural Perfection in every way. Whenthey hurt you would stand beside themforever. Have you ever felt their pain forthem or shared it with them? Because ifyou have you will know in every waywhy this poem is the way it is. Listen ...
The tears, are running down her faceone drop at a time. Each drop is a bomb,It’s unleashed from her eyesit drops and then breaks on my neck. Her heart,Beating right next to mine, every strained breath she takes it
beats faster. Her neck and throat, shriveling up,struggling for clean oxygen. The sweat, rolling down her forehead, drizzling down her spine, crying for mercy. Her veins, running through her weak tiny wrists
leading to her head twisting in knots. Her hair, swiveling and fighting the wind, gliding across her neck. Her legs,Wanting to take a step but the cuts
and blood beat the urge and will. Her feet, wanting to dance and flex her fragile
toes. Her nose, helping the breathing mouth exhaling
and inhaling. Her fingers, thin and frailleading to her nails that curve intothe perfect shape. Her eyelashes,a damp tear frozen to the eyelash, wanting to open and be free like but-
terflies. Her ears, blocking out the voice and whisper of
me trying to sooth her.Her back and stomach, locked down my clammy hands push-

BurdensBy Kate Burkholder
I look aheadTo the cities nearAnd feel nothing but regret.I know they are closeAnd I could reach them easilyBut I stay frozen in the ground.
I have done too many bad deedsAnd am too guilty to move on.I can feel the wind blowing gently on
my face,So cold,So alone,My burden feels like a thousand
pounds of gold lying upon my back,Dust falling off its golden edges,And I can not touch themEven thoughI am longing
SummerBy Kate Burkholder
Summer is …A dream.
Summer is …The firefly’s neon light,Against the dark indigo sky.
Summer is …The moon,Casting its’ shadow down across the
ocean.
Summer is …A sunset,Fiery orange,And a deep crimson red setting upon
a hill.
Summer is …The crickets,Chirping softly late at night.
Summer is ...A dream

The BrushBy Rachel Cleaveland
I feel my owner’s moist, squishy palmgrip my hard wooden handle,She has calmed downand is ready to try again.I know what is about to happen.I can feel her slow breathingruffle my silky bristles,Then my bristles are dippedinto the smooth, glossy paint,They are coated evenlywith the wet brown,Each getting its fair share. She pauses, letting the excess paintslide cleanly off my bristles.I get butterflies in my stomachas inch toward the wrinkled paper,As I touch down,I feel the dry paper stealingmy bark brown right off my hairs, absorbing it greedily,As I was gliding across the flat paper,I hear jingling,All of a sudden a catjumps up on the table, which emits a groan. It knocks the paint overonto my creation. As I am taken to the sink,my heart feels lonely withoutmy wonderful creation.I am … a paintbrush!

I Am HappiestWhen
I am happiest when I am aroundmy mom and brothers. When I amwith someone else, I miss my momunless I call her. Then I feel happy, and I don’t worry. Sometimes mymom doesn’t want me to go be-cause we kind of don’t spend timetogether. She goes to work some-times in the morning, afternoonand in the night. Sometimes, Iwould be happy if my dad neverwent to heaven, but that is life.
We are all going to heaven.Marvin CedillosHoffman Boston Elementary Schoolgrade 5, age 11
Salvador DaliI read a biography about Salva-
dor Dali, and the book was writ-ten by Mike Venezia.
Salvador Dali was a Spanishpainter. He was born in Figuera,Spain, in the year 1904. He wasan unusual painter, and he had abig imagination.
Salvador loved painting. He wasvery creative. Salvador Dali be-lieved in himself. He was hardworking, and he had his own per-sonality.
Something that I really likedContinued, Page 19
from the book was when I sawSalvador’s painting because theylooked interesting. I could see hewas creative, and he loved paint-ing.
I enjoyed reading this biographyabout Salvador Dali. It made thinkhow much work he put into hiswork when he was painting and itinspired me a lot. I would like topaint like Salvador Dali.

One Thing IDo Well
One thing I do well is cart-wheels. I was in cheerleading sinceI was 4 years old and stopped at 9years old. I do cartwheels all thetime. When I was in cheerleading,I was always the cartwheel person.I did the one-hand cartwheel. I dida regular cartwheel. I even did acartwheel with no hands. I also didround-offs, two-hand springs, backflips and front flips.
I love doing cartwheels becauseit’s fun and not a lot of people cando them. I learned how to a cart-wheel when I was 3 years old. Myaunt taught me how, and now sheis trying to teach her daughter howto do them.
My cartwheels have been a bigpart of my life, and I hope I canstill do them when I get old. Oh,and I can’t do the no-hand cart-wheel anymore or the back flip orthe front flip because since Istopped at age 9, I have beenscared to do them.

Barack ObamaBarack Obama is the president
of the United States. He was bornin Honolulu, Hawaii, on August4th, 1961. When Barack wasyounger, he wanted to be the firstAfrican-American president. To-day, Barack Obama has accom-plished his goal and is now the44th president of the UnitedStates. Barack made his importantspeech on how and why he wantsto be the president on Feb. 23,2007 in Austin, Texas.
My favorite part of the book Iwas reading about Barack Obamais when people would say “Barackwho?” They would call him“Barack Yo Mama” or “Barack Ala-bama.” I think people should callhim by his real name and not makeup last names.

Susan B. AnthonyToday and tomorrow everyone will be
treated equally. But a couple hundred yearsago, only white men were treated fairly. Itmay sound unfair, but that is the way thingsworked. The law makers thought theywould never change the way life worked. But a woman who fought for equal rightschanged their minds.
Susan B. Anthony was a strong and bravewoman who spent a lifetime fighting forwomen to have the right to vote. That may
sound impossible, but she never quit. Her family was just as amazing as she
was. Her father was a Quaker, which meanthe didn’t believe in slavery. It also meantSusan wasn’t like other girls. Back then, people who were Quakers believed in fair-ness between men and women. Susan knewthat no one should be left out.
In her day, Susan B. Anthony and all theother women didn’t have the right to doanything unless they liked housework —and not just making up the bed, taking outthe trash, but real, hard, housework. It was
especially hard when you had no electric-ity, no soap or anything. Everyone thoughtwomen were too delicate to work, but tak-ing care of a house and a family was harder.
Susan B. Anthony tried her best again andagain. She formed meetings, but the peoplebooed her and didn’t give her the right totalk. Finally, Susan B. Anthony had enoughof it. She voted! As great as it sounds, itwasn’t. In 1862, she got arrested. It maysound crazy, getting arrested for voting, butthat’s what happened.
After long years of hope, Susan B. An-
thony died. She died without seeing herdream come true. Fourteen years later, shefinally won! Women got the right to vote, work, and do anything. We will always re-member Susan B. Anthony because of herbrave personality and her fight for women’srights.

Beginning of Part 1 … TestIt was done, over. The final seconds
of the test, I knew I would fail but Ididn’t really want to ditch school to-day. I’m the top student in my classbut I have a terrible teacher, Mr.Gregor. Even though I was sick, Mr.(Gross) Gregor didn’t give me anotherday to study. He just gave me a test, with questions I didn’t know. It didn’thelp that Jeremy Squeal was sittingnext to me. He had always annoyedme, picking my last nerve, blabbingabout his ‘awesome’ Playstation 3 andhe would snicker whenever I got onething wrong, in other words, he was abig nub.
“Time’s up!” Mr. Gregor bellowed ashe went around the room to collect thepapers. I groaned, gave him my testand tried to walk casually out thedoor. “Mr. Chapman?” Mr. Gregorcalled. I turned around to face him.“Your first answer was way off. Youshould really know these simple ques-tions. Remember the worksheet? Well,I guess it’s too bad, I’ll have to give youyour first ever F!” He seemed happy, Ilooked up as if there was going to beballoons and streamers falling fromthe ceiling. I watched as his ballpointpen moved ever so closer to the paper, then I whispered, “I was out sick” “Ex-cuse me?” Mr. Gregor whispered. “Iwas out sick,” I said much louder thistime. “What?!” He said more severely.“I was out s ick!” I yel led. “Mr.Chapman!” Mr. Gregor said as if hewas taken aback, which he wasn’t, hewas absolutely gleeful, “March yourself to Principal Dickens!” He said in asing-song tone. Then I went outside, and banged my head against the wall.
End of Part One … Start Part 2… Dickens
Dickens, how to describe him, he’shairy, scary, and harsh. For example, this kid named Henry Lattice went upto his office for chewing gum, he cameback with a police record, which had hisfingerprint on it. He is one tough dude.So I was preparing for the Clarkvill De-tention Center, I took a deep breath, andwalked in. I sat down one of those wait-ing chairs that they have right outside ofprincipal’s doors. It makes you feel allguilty. It made me, but I didn’t knowwhy, it wasn’t my fault I got strep. Infact, it was so bad, I went to the hospi-tal. There’s been a really bad strepepidemic going on in the greaterClarkvill area. In fact, I heard Mr.Gregor’s son had a minor case. “Luckyhim” I said aloud. “Lucky who?” Princi-pal Dickens said as he suddenly openedthe door. Let me give you a quick de-scription of Dickens, pudgy cheeks, alittle chubby, and a grump. That’s themodest description. “Well,” I said, “Myfriend Jeremy is going to Disney Landand I was really sad I wasn’t going so Iwas like, lucky him!” “Oh just come in!”he mumbled as he pushed me throughthe door. “Why are you here Renny?” Hesaid calmly. “I got an F.” He laughed.“Really Renny, tell me why you’re here.”He said with clear amusement. “I got abad grade.” I said. “Was it a B, or maybea C?” He’s toying with me, I realized, Ishouldn’t give him the satisfaction. “Igot a F.” I said calmly. “Did you study atall?” He asked. “Well … Yes I did, but itwas only for 10 minutes.” “Do you real-ize this test is the base of your finalgrade? The one that gets sent to middleschool?” I started to answer but he cutme off, “You know what? You’re smart;I don’t expect a lame excuse. Accordingto the school records you were out yes-terday. Did you go to Disney Land?” “I
was out SICK!” I yelled out way tooloud. Dickens smirked. “I just got anemail about a noise complaint. Any-how what’s your punishment? Howabout … No after-school classes for amonth!” I stared at him. He smiled. Heknew after-school classes were my life!I was signed up for one every day ofevery month. It was because my par-ents wanted me to be good at a lot ofdifferent things, but I enjoyed it.“What about, Tennis?” “No” “Soccer?”No “Rock Juggling?” He thought.“No.” “Ohhh.” I groaned. Then Ifainted. Well it felt like I fainted as Iwalked clumsily through the halls.
End of Part 2 … Part 3: TuckerI went home, ran upstairs and
slammed the door. “Want some cook-ies?” My mom yelled up. “No thanks!”I yelled back down. The first thing Idid was call Tucker, the king of thebrats. Tucker and I were close in anodd way, he was a nub, like Jeremy, but yet, we got along. The issue wasTucker’s mom always listened in onprivate conversations, so we alwayshave to talk in an odd top secret code.“I got in trouble with the Dread,”“What?” Tucker said “Mr. Dick gaveme the tick,” “What?” He said. I wasseriously getting irritated. “Dickensgave me the boot.” I said as I was get-ting really exasperated, “Ohhh!” Hesaid. “So … want to come over andplay?” I groaned and hung up. Then Icried. It was morning, I hadn’t told myparents about being banned from allafter school activities, even Rock Jug-gl ing. I f I wasn’t banned fromeverything, today would be chess.Laugh all you want but chess is ahighly strategic and fun game. Youshould try it. Then a thought poppedin my head, it was an idea that I’dshortly regret. In the back of theschool there is this forest that has asmall dirt path that seems to go tonowhere. There seems to be nothingon the other side, there’s no road, nobuilding, no nothing so I didn’t seewhy the teachers wouldn’t let us backthere. “Well,” I said. “I guess it’s timeto find out.”

Jack. “Thank you for the mission, Sir,”I said. “You’re welcome Agent2323442424928338294.” Jack C. M.His brother. I’ve heard stories abouthim. Bad ones.
The airport was crowded. Planes leav-ing for North Dakota were rushingeverywhere. But the busiest city of all?Crazinsville, my destination. “Do youwant a Wizberry?” The woman at thefood cart said. “Not thirsty,” I lied. It wasmy first time to spy, and even when youare thirsty, poison is not the way to go.It was my first time to spy, and I wouldnot fail.
Chapter 2: The White HouseWhite. What was white? White was
the house the taxi driver was heading to.No one has painted their house whitesince 2012 when president Malloy waselected. He said white was a disgracefulcolor. Not even a color. ‘I want myhouse to be painted a color!’ he saidwhen he saw the house. I was imagin-ing him standing outside this houselike I was.
Jeff McMacafee was a crazy man.Hopefully he was crazy enough to be-lieve my disguise.
1. Eyeglasses.2. Fake mustache3. Top hat.‘Just like McMacafee’s boss!’ Pres.
Malloy said. How did he know? If heknew the White House still existed, he’dfreak.
10 MINUTES LATER …“Come in boss!” McMacafee said.“I am here to discuss serious business!
First of all. Who painted your house,” Isaid.
“Me”“Well it’s terrible!” I said.“So?”“Anyways,” I said, “I am here to talk
about even more serious business. Butfirst, I’m thirsty! How about someWizberry?”
“Sure,” he said.I poured a glass for him. He spilled
the glass on my new tux. I was prettysure that was on purpose. “That actuallywasn’t part of the costume!” I screamed.
Jack raised an eyebrow. “Costume?”“Uh… no…” I lied.“This isn’t either. Say hello to the boot
of kicking!”“Hi …”“Awkward … snap out of it Jeff!” Jeff
said.“Am I talking to my self aga-argggg-
what-don’t get me ther-oh just kick himJeff! End of discussion!”
“Still talking to youselllllllllllllllffffff,”I screamed as the boot of kicking sentme out the door. “White is so ugly onhouses you know!” I screamed. That wasone of the last things I said before get-ting knocked out cold. The last thing Iremembered was saying, “stupid tr-.”
Chapter 3 Stupid Trees“The last thing we need is a spy who
gets caught like that!” President Malloywould have said. “If he was the bad guy-oh gosh- can you say tied to a rocketgoing to outer space where you getsucked into a black hole? This is justwhat we need on the team James. ThereI said it. Your real name James, yourreal name James. Do you want to knowwhat happened to the last spy who hadhis real name spoken in here?” I startedto speak, but he answered for me. “NoJames, you don’t!” That was what hewould’ve said.
I woke up. “es.” I have a greatmemory. Remember earlier when Icrashed into a tree? Yeah, you do. Iprobably would’ve had a concussion, and I probably did. But I’d notice it if I
wanted to notice it. And I didn’t. Injurywas all in the mind. If you noticed it,you’d be scared, and call 911 and over-react. If you stayed calm, you’d call forhelp, and then call 911. And if you pre-tend it’s not there, you try to keep going. And that’s what I tried. “Stupid trees, stupid trees, stu…” I hit another tree.“Stupid…” Another tree. I walked likethat all the way to the airport. The oldboot of kicking kicked my wallet out ofmy pocket. Or maybe I thought it did.Sooner or later I’d call the Mythbustersfor this one. I had enough time to thinkabout that before I hit another tree. Imust really have a concussion. I stoppedthere and called the office. The secretaryanswered. “Tell President MalloyMcMacafee knew the soda was poi-soned. At least I’m pretty sure.” Shecalled back 2 hours later. “PresidentMalloy says to check out the WSS,World Soda Society. His brother JackMalloy will be there.” In my one year ofworking for Mr. Malloy, he never men-tioned a brother. He had pictures of hisfamily back in 2010. A man with greyhair, and way younger woman, probablyhis sister. His mother was away in Sac-ramento on vacation with his unknownbrother. Smack! A tree. Bound to hap-pen sooner or later.
“Why is that office never filled?” Iasked the president in March.
“It’s C.O. Jackylisey’s office; he’s awayon business often.” Mr. Malloy an-swered. ‘Should I believe him?’ Iwondered then.
I sat down in the 12th row; and it was5:30 p.m., so it’s around 7:00 at home. Iwasn’t used to that. Good thing I was fly-ing to Fakensville, time would be the samethen. Then I looked to the seat next to me.I had a hallucination of a tree.

ion Hills. In the morning, you can bring anythingon wheels — like a razor bike or a skateboard. So Iusually bring a bike in the morning and my skate-board for the afternoon. Once when I was on myskateboard and trying to steer it, the board went upand I landed you know where.
Sometimes I just watch the older kids doing fancytricks like 360s and ollies. I’m thinking one day I’mgoing to do that too. The best thing about the skatepark is you don’t have to pay. The skate park is ab-solutely my favorite place to go!

Bowl America RocksStrike! I am at Bowl America for Jaden’s bowling
birthday party. There are a lot of funny things here.Like, whenever you get a split, a hockey player popsup on the screen, and a hockey puck hits him andmakes his teeth fall out. The sound I love to hear isthe rumbling of bowling balls. And I love to wearthe comfy bowling shoes. I scored 60-something withmy black and green-lined ball. Not bad! Time at BowlAmerica couldn’t be better!

The best part of the course is the hugehill. You have to run down and see whereyour ball landed. I feel the wind in my facewhen I run. Sometimes we’ll swim or getice cream. Mine is always chocolate. That’swhy I love Upton Hills so much!

The Growing Envi-ronmental Building
I love being in the United States BotanicGarden, especially during the holidays. There are festive trains chugging all aroundthe central room. In the jungle room, youcan go on a balcony overlooking a forest ofgreen. There are mist things that spray tohelp the plants grow. There are differentrooms with different environments. Thedesert room looks and feels like Hawaii. Thejungle looks and feels like, well, a jungle. The botanic garden is such an enchantingplace to visit!

Stomping likeElephants at theMuseum of NaturalHistory
Roar! If I had a free day, I would defi-nitely go to the Museum of Natural Historyin D.C. When you walk in, it doesn’t looklike a museum with fake animals. Far intothe building you can feel the stomping ofthe elephants and hear the sound theymake. Later in the museum you see a tigerthat looks like it will jump on you. In a dif-ferent room there is a giant elephant as bigas a house! You can also see animal foot-prints like deer. There are many other mag-nificent things to see in the building. Whenyou think you are finished, there are alwaysother enjoyable places to explore in theMuseum of Natural History.

Having Fun at
McKinley PlaygroundI have so much fun at the McKinley play-
ground after school. The zip line is my fa-vorite spot. It’s fun doing it with one hand. The other thing I really enjoy is the mon-key bars. Back and forth! I like to see howmany I can skip. My record is four. I alsolove just sitting up on top, feeling like thequeen of the playground. Other times I evendo summersaults on them.

The Grand SlamStadium
The National’s Stadium is great! Let metell you about it. It’s really huge, and whenyou go in, you can feel the excitement. Mydad has season tickets that are close to theaction. Usually balls fly near our seats.Sometime, I’d sure love to catch one!
Another reason I love their stadium is thatthey have great food. The chicken nuggetsare the best. We eat them with ketchup andmustard. I usually say, “It’s awesome here!”They also have video games, and a play-house before the game starts. It’s great fromstart to finish at the Nationals Stadium!

Dominion Hills isda Bomb!
The very best place to be in the summeris the Dominion Hills pool. I enjoy doingtons of belly flops off the diving board. When I get out of the pool, I am saturated,so I jump in again because it feels so cool. Ialways buy something from the snack ma-chine. Sometimes I get cookies, and some-times I get a Snickers bar. I also like play-ing Ping-Pong with my brother, Bennett. Iserve the ball — smack — and he hits itright past me. Dominion Hills pool is dabomb!

Ice Skating Comes inFirst Place for Me
Kaboom! I just fell down while doing asharp turn on the ice at the Kettler Ice Rink.I took lessons at the ice skating camp, andI’m getting really good at whizzing around.I can even do a little spin on ice, but it isn’treally that that good yet.
It’s also really cool just watching whenthe Zamboni cleans the ice. Afterward it’sas smooth as glass. I also like when the realice skaters go on the ice doing all those spinsand jumps. I think the Kettler Ice Rink isthe best place to be.

In the pantheon of things (subjects) withwhich I have absolutely no knowledge (andeven less interest) are cars and more specifi-cally – and especially, their repairs. Thehead of a pin would likely provide sufficientspace for that knowledge. So when some-thing as routinely simple as an “Oil” lightilluminates on my car’s dashboard, myimmediate reaction/assessment is “Oh…!Now what do I do?” What little I do knowto do, reactive though it may be (asopposed to proactive as it should be), is toconsult the owner’s manual provided by thedealer/manufacturer. However, since thereare 352 pages in that manual, I’m notinstinctively able (even though oil beginswith the letter “o”) to seek and find theanswer to my question. That questionbeing, as simply as my limited knowledgecan determine is, “What kind of oil do I putin my car’s engine?”
Knowing what information I wantedthough, did not assist me in finding it as Iflipped through the hundreds of color-coded and headline/categorized pages/sections, so I went to the back of the man-ual, the glossary of terms if you will, to see ifthe very specification information for whichI was looking was somehow identified. Sureenough, it was. Oh boy, was it!
The terms are listed alphabetically so Iscanned/flipped the pages until I found thegrouping for the letter “O.” And there, tomy nearly uncontrollable joy, I found theexact answer I was looking for. And found itin such Kenny-level English that I thought itworth mentioning and focusing on as fodderfor this week’s column. Reading the listingsunder “Oil,” from top to bottom I read, “OilChanging;” “Identification Symbol;” andthen the pièce de résistance and the choiceI could not actually resist – or believe myeyes – which enabled me to find the answerto my oil question, was printed the follow-ing: “What kind of oil do I put in myengine?” Can you believe that? A manualwritten just for me, and a category/answerto my question that was so perfectly suitedto its owner’s minuscule level – and totallack – of knowledge, that it prevented evena “Bozo” like me from clowning-up thismuch-needed repair/replenishment. Youcan’t imagine (although maybe you can) thesheer joy and relief I experienced, whenafter stressing-up the usual anxiety broughton by these kinds of car-related conun-drums (the appearance of an “idiot” light;aptly named), and then holding this volumi-nous owner’s manual in my hands as wellwith a simple answer apparently not in theoffing, that I was able to, in relatively shortorder, find the answer and find it so obvi-ously stated that, my usual mental anguishconcerning this mechanical mishmash wascompletely eliminated.
When I saw in the owner’s manual thatthe section/page that I needed to get to wasin fact the exact question to which I wasdesperately seeking a simple – and quick –answer, I busted out laughing and said,“Finally, a manual that I can understand.”
Simple pleasures for a simple person. Now that’s what I’m talking about!

Rainbow Day-DreamHi! I’m Velma. Currently struggling in
math and science. I hate Social Studies, butI do great in it. And, you know, surprisingly,I am the second smartest in my class. Wait,no third smartest.
Right now, I’m in class learning sciencestuff like, ya know, Roy G. Biv (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet) wave-lengths and frequencies — stuff like that.
Everything is going in one ear and com-ing right out. I begin to wander in a day-dream. Well, I think …
“Omigosh, where am I?” I say to myself.I saw a cute little walking rainbow thingy.
It was the color indigo, I think, and it saidto me, “You just in time for the fight! Ohand by the way you are at the great Woy G.Biv (she means ROY G BIV) laboratory. I’mIndigo. Please call me Indie.” She soundedlike a cute little baby.
“OK, Indie. What do you mean by ‘I’m justin time for the fight?’” I asked her, puzzled.
Before she could respond, the lights wereturned off and there were two spotlightson other rainbow thingies and — hey —there were my favorite colors: red and vio-let in the boxing ring.
Everyone was completely silent and Indiesomehow disappeared. I looked around andit was pitch dark everywhere except the twospotlights shining on red and violet. Theywere jumping around a bit and then therewas single ring of a bell and the fight be-gan.
I think they were fighting over which onewas better — weird!
Red began and shouted at the top of hislungs, “I am the best because I come first inthe acronym Roy G. Biv, and I have the long-est wavelength! Ha! Beat that!”
“Fine, I will beat that,” Violet said withall the dignity she had left. “You may have

Then I heard a shout. I looked aroundworried, and Indie whispers to me, “Theprofessor!”
I heard whispers saying, “Busted!” I won-der why.
Then the professor appears out of no-where and shouts, “Break it up you two orI’ll put you all back into the prism!”
Next thing I know I’m in class and every-one is laughing at me. I say to myself, “Thisis the weirdest daydream ever.”

Paper DanceI am a tree. I provide oxygen for all plants,
animals and humans. It is a nice, sunny day.Soon a truck with lots of people come. Thepeople scare me. They have very big axes.
Ouch! I am being cut down. Slice!Crunch! Bang! My bark is breaking. My in-sides are breaking. My leaves are falling off.Help!
Later I am sent to a store. I am in thispaper box. It is very dark. Soon a familypays money and buys me. I travel in a ma-chine the humans call a “car.” I travel tothis nice house. I am carried inside thehouse.
A human is drawing beautiful pictures onme. There is a house, butterfly, grass, sunand a stream. Later the humans put me inthis thing they call a “recycling bin.”
Soon I travel to a factory where I see thathumans are making old paper into newpaper. I am clean and brand new again. Ifly away in the wind I fall onto a bench. Iwatch a soccer game. The humans playedwell. The team called Blue Summers won.
I fly away in the wind again. I fall insidea factory. It is the same factory I went tosome time ago. I turn into new paper. I amthe color brown now.
A human prints words on me from a ma-chine they call a printer. Now I have blackliquid stuff all over me. I have words thathumans can understand. I am in a school. Ihave some homework directions written onme. Later I am put into a recycling bin.
Then I am recycled again. That is my en-tire life, and this is the paper dance.
