Chapter visits Library and Records Center

On Tuesday, April 16, Tidewater Chapter members traveled to Richmond to visit the Library of Virginia and the State Records Center. Library of Virginia (LVA) Tour. Georgia McQuigg summarizes the trip:

A guided tour of the first and second floors of the Library of Virginia showed the group various resources and services offered by the Library of Virginia. The tour ended with some Chapter members applying for and receiving the LVA library cards. Following the tour, the guide continued to assist members interested in the current gallery exhibition, “You Have No Right: Law and Justice in Virginia.”

After free time to explore the café and the gift shop, the group assembled in the conference room for the book talk.

Book talk: “Death by Petticoat: American History Myths Debunked” by author Mary Theobald discussed the truth behind many of the myths and misconceptions that abound in America's classrooms and museums. We were shocked to discover many things we have been taught in school or on historical tours are just folklore.

State Records Center (SRC) Tour: After lunch the group met at the SRC for a tour the facility. Climate control and access control as well as fire precautions were explained to the group as we viewed the rows of records stored at the SRC archives. Shredding and disposal services were reviewed and the extremely cold freezer was shown to us. Other services provided by the SRC were reviewed as well.
