TONIGHT’S EVENTS

Hispanic Heritage/Tea Men Tribute NightThe Armada FC return to Community First Park tonight to take on in-state rivals, the Tampa Bay Rowdies, presented by Winn-Dixie.

In a night that is sure to be remembered, the Armada FC will honor Jacksonville’s first major league professional sports team, the Jacksonville Tea Men, by wearing their signature red and tangerine kits. Former Tea Men players, coaches and administrators will also be honored in a pre-match ceremony.

The club will also be celebrating Northeast Florida’s tremendous Hispanic heritage throughout the night, and to commemorate the occasion, Yanira Cardona from Jacksonville’s “hottest” latin band Ritmo y Sabor will sing the national anthem.

ARMADA MATCHDAY EXPERIENCEThe Armada are encouraging fans to arrive early on Saturday to enjoy a two-hour, pre-match build-up at the Armada Matchday Experience presented by PRI Productions on Duval Street which runs from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and will include a number of food trucks as well as the Armada Soccer Experience inflatables.

HALFTIME SHOWThe Armada halftime show will feature a number of spectacular soccer-style promotions including the Winn-Dixie Bubble Battle, Brumos Grand Prix, Subway Tailgater of the Match and Moe’s T-Shirt Toss. As usual, the Armada players will sign autographs at pitch side immediately following the match.

TONIGHT’S MATCHUPTonight’s match is not only the third and final meeting between the Armada FC and instate rivals the Tampa Bay Rowdies, but will also be the debut match for interim head coach Eric Dade. The Armada are looking to avenge two narrow 3-2 defeats in St. Petersburg and spark a run at the NASL Championship playoff.

‘PEPP TALK’ WITH COLE PEPPER

Let me start by stating that I don’t know what is going to happen in the future. But the news this week that the Armada have cut ties with General Manager Dario Sala, head coach Guillermo Hoyos and his staff bring with it a wave of obvious change.

Eric Dade, the former MLS defender who, as coach, led Jacksonville United FC to a national championship in the NPSL, takes over on an interim basis. Here’s why I love this move:

1. Localized - Dade not only coached a JUFC team that included Tommy Krizanovic, Ramak Safi, and Tyler Williams that won the championship, he also was an assistant for the Jacksonville University women’s team. He’s been a significant contributor in the Jacksonville soccer scene for the past five years. And the Armada are nothing if not local.

2. Energized - The Armada have not scored a goal in their last five matches. This team has too much talent to endure a stretch like that. A change can be energizing and with five of the final seven matches at home, the Armada supporters will look forward to goals and exciting soccer.

3. Connection - I’ve interviewed Dade on a couple of occasions and I’ve found him to be a thoughtful, insightful guy when talking about soccer. He also has this very cool, laid back demeanor blended with a sense of confidence of philosophy. It will be exciting to see him connect with media, fans and interested observers.

Now for the future. Dade is the interim head coach. He had been the executive director of JFC, in essence, a part of the Armada’s developmental operation. Now he has a chance to be a head coach at a much higher level. This is his chance to prove that he can be a rising star in coaching in the game.

The big unknown now is how the players will respond. Some will no doubt be motivated. Some may have a harder time adjusting. Soccer players, more than players in any other team sport, learn to adjust to new coaches. For example, Shad Khan’s soccer team in England, went through three managers in one season. It happens. Soccer players are probably better equipped to deal with a change in leadership than any other athletes.

Against the Tampa Bay Rowdies, we’ll get our first look at what is certainly the present of the Armada and what could be the future.

Bring up the Jacksonville Tea Men to Ingo Krieg and you are sure to get much more than reminiscing about soccer in the early 1980s. A passionate promoter of the Jacksonville sports scene, Krieg still remains proud of his investment years later.

A Jacksonville-based engineer and bio fuel entrepreneur, Krieg escaped from East Germany with his family when he was only three years old. In 1982, he joined a group of investors to bring Jacksonville its first professional soccer team in a move from New England.

Over 30 years later soccer is back with the Armada playing in their inaugural season, and Krieg is glad to see it carry on the tradition set forth by his Jacksonville Tea Men.

“Jake Godbold was the mayor in the early ’80s and he wanted to bring more teams into the city,” he said. “Lipton Tea, which owned the team, wanted to come down here because it was having trouble playing at the stadium in Foxborough, Mass., along with the New England Patriots. They had conflicts in schedule, so Lipton decided to find another place to play, and Jacksonville was where it decided to come.”

INGO KRIEG REFLECTS ON THE ORIGINS OF SOCCER IN JACKSONVILLE

Page 22: Armada Matchday Issue 15 | Armada FC vs. Tampa Bay Rowdies - September 26, 2015

Krieg saw a real opportunity in the team and decided to investigate.

“Lipton didn’t want to come in unless it had local ownership. It had a couple of investors already, but it came out in the paper that it needed another investor to really close the deal. My father was always very athletic and even tried out for the Olympic team, so I thought this was a real chance for me get involved in sport. So I met with the people that I needed to, wrote them a check and the rest was history and the team started playing in 1982.”

When Lipton decided to sell the team, Krieg saw another opportunity. The team had peaked in attendance at more than 18,000 people, and it was something that not only himself but the entire community clearly valued and decided to take a chance.

“What really convinced me to go on my own after Lipton decided to back off and all the other investors started to leave was our game against the New York Cosmos,” he said. “It was a 1-1 tie that went to a two-round shootout, which we ended up winning. It was drizzling rain the whole time, and Arnie (Mausser) was our goalie. I had always been a good friend to Arnie, but I knew we had the best goalie in the league. I also knew we had something really special here. After that match, I felt like it was important to keep the team here. So I met with the vice president of marketing at Lipton and asked if I could continue to use the Tea Men name. He said yes and offered his continued support to the club. I had an opportunity to keep the team here, but I couldn’t afford to pay the NASL salaries on my own, so I approached the American Soccer League (ASL), and they accepted us.”

“Dennis told me, ‘Ingo, this is what soccer is all about. Playing international.’ It was really awesome.”

Page 23: Armada Matchday Issue 15 | Armada FC vs. Tampa Bay Rowdies - September 26, 2015

23

Jacksonville was able to keep its team, but the best was yet to come.

“I really enjoyed going to league meetings all around the country. I had a great general manager in Dick Kravitz and coach in Dennis Viollet. Dennis put together a really good team with some of the players from the NASL team, some new players and even one from Jacksonville University, Tony Novo. From there, we had an excellent season that year and won the ASL championship in 1982 against the Pennsylvania Stoners. It was the first national championship the city had ever had. That allowed us to play in a CONCACAF tournament and play international. Dennis told me, ‘Ingo, this is what soccer is all about. Playing international.’ It was really awesome.”

Jacksonville now had a team that was competing on a global scale for the first time it its history.

“We flew down to Panama and won. Then they came back and played here at the Gator Bowl. We must have been too ‘nice’ and didn’t get the local fans riled up enough, so we lost that one. But I really enjoyed that part. That is when I realized that Dennis’ whole life had been about international play.”

Tonight the memory the team that laid the foundation for soccer in Jacksonville will be honored, and Krieg is glad to see it.

“This is an incredibly nice gesture from Mark Frisch,” he said. “From the team to front office and even city leaders like Mayor Godbold, it took everyone to do it back then. But I think it was Dennis Viollet. He actually took all the equipment and did the training camps, which really got things going all around town.”

“Honestly, I could see some more international play going here in Jacksonville,” he said. “It is obviously a goal of the Armada’s, and we definitely have the city to do it. “

“Dennis told me, ‘Ingo, this is what soccer is all about. Playing international.’ It was really awesome.”

TONIGHT’S OPPONENT

A ROWDY HISTORYThe Tampa Bay Rowdies have had a significant presence in both incarnations of the North American Soccer League. The original franchise was established in 1975 and won the NASL Soccer Bowl championship in its inaugural year. The first Tampa Bay Rowdies club lasted nearly twenty years in multiple different leagues, including two in as an Indoor soccer team and one as an independent club.

In 2008, a group of investors returned Tampa Bay’s original soccer team back to the modern NASL and in 2010, the briefly named FCTB Rowdies, played their inaugural season at Tampa’s George M. Steinbrenner Field. In 2012, the Rowdies won their second NASL Championship after a thrilling shootout victory in front of a sold out crowd at Al Lang Stadium in downtown St. Petersburg.

FALL 2015 Despite sitting relatively comfortable in the combined standings, the Tampa Bay Rowdies (4W-2D-7L Fall, 9-6-8 Combined) have undergone big changes in the second half of 2015. Head coach Stuart Campbell took over the team in late August and will be looking for his fourth win, seven matches at the helm. Despite their Fall Season woes, the Rowdies remain in contention for an NASL Championship playoff spot in the Combined standings.

The Rowdies hold a lead in the series, winning both previous contests at Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg with identical 3-2 score lines. Tonight’s meeting is the first ever at Community First Park in Downtown Jacksonville, and the stakes are high for both clubs.

The key to shutting down the Rowdies attack is in bottling the explosive power from their lethal frontline Maicon Santos and Darwin Espinal with a solid defensive effort. A continuous stream of sustained pressure on the Rowdies goalkeeper, in which Kamil Contofalsky has appeared in both previous meetings, has proved to be effective and is another key to finding the scoreboard early.

SOCCER 101A GUIDE TO THE GAME

OBJECTIVETwo teams, with 11 players per side, compete to score goals while protecting their own from the opposing team.

Goals are scored by putting the ball in the opposing team’s goal box.

Positions

Forwards – Their main responsibility is to score goals.

Midfielders – They move up and down the field as they contribute to both the defensive and offensive efforts.

Defenders – The last line of defense other than the goalkeeper.

Goalkeeper – The only players allowed to use their hands and arms.

The ShootoutFive players from each team take turns shooting on goal with only the goalkeeper. Whichever team scores the most goals wins. If the tie is not broken after the 2 rounds, five more players are chosen and the shootout becomes sudden death, where the first team to score a goal wins.

MATCH LENGTHMatches have two 45-minute halves played without stopping the clock, with a 15-minute halftime break.

At the end of 45 minutes, the referee adds on “stoppage time” to make up for any delays during play.

Matches can end in ties, but usually in tournaments or playoff games, there must be a winner. Ties are broken with two 15-minute overtime periods, followed by a penalty shootout.

37

No touchingPlayers can use any part of their body except their hands and arms.

The goalkeeper is the only player allowed to touch the ball with the hands and arms, but only while he is in his own penalty box.

Set Pieces

Throw-ins – The opponents are awarded a throw-in when a player causes the ball to go out of play. One player is allowed to throw the ball in towards one of their teammates, resuming play.

Goal kicks – A goal kick is awarded to a team when the opposing team does not score but causes the ball to cross the defending team’s goal line on either side of the net.

Corner kicks – A corner kick is given to the attacking team when the ball crosses the goal line, having been last touched by a player on the defending team.

Free kicks – There are two types of free kicks – indirect and direct. Indirect free kicks are for less severe fouls and must be touched by another player before entering the goal. Direct free kicks are given for serious fouls and are allowed to enter the goal without being touched by any other player.

The Cards

Yellow Card – Penalty for committing a dangerous or unfair foul.

Red Card – Penalty for continuing to play with excessive aggression, also ejects them from the game and disqualifies the player their next match. Their team will be forced to play the rest of the game without their ejected player and is not allowed to substitute another player in.

The Offside Rule

Offside Position (OK) – A player is in the offside position if they are ahead of the ball, in the opponents’ half of the field and there are fewer than two opponents even with or ahead of him.

Offside (NOT OK) – A player who is in the offside posi-tion becomes offside when they participate in the play when they interfere with an opponent or otherwise tries to take advantage of being in the offside position.

Exceptions – It’s not a foul for a player in an offside

BOB’S BOOTROOM

The Armada returns home tonight against the high-flying Tampa Bay Rowdies.

With seven games left in the fall season, five of which are at home, it is still possible for the Armada to reach the playoffs, with a lot of help from other teams.

And with the enthusiasm and fresh outlook that interim head coach Eric Dade brings, it is a given that the team will give it everything it has to finish as high in the standings as possible.

After red cards, injuries and International duty hopefully the full front line, midfield and defense will back for today’s game at full strength. And with a new interim coaching staff in place, it will be interesting to see what sort of adjustments to style of play and lineup will take place.

Tonight the Armada will be remembering the Jacksonville Tea Men, wearing the throwback uniforms of that team. The Tea Men came to Jacksonville from New England in 1980 as the first professional sports team in Jacksonville. They played in the inaugural NASL through 1982, then in the ASL (American Soccer League) and the USL (United Soccer League) through 1984.

Let us hope the Armada make their predecessors proud by rising to the occasion and sending the Tampa Bay Rowdies home defeated. To do this, the Armada must keep their shape at the back and cover each other in defense when defenders make runs forward. The midfield must get the ball forward quickly and find space for the defense to get the ball to them. Up front we have to take chances, put more shots on goal and find space to make quick one/two passes.
