Bringing Energy Down to EarthSay energy. Think environment. And vice versa.Any company that is energy conscious is also environ-mentally conscious. Less energy means less waste, fewer emissions and a healthier environment.
In short, bringing energy and environment togetherlowers the cost industry must pay for both. By helpingcompanies manage energy, Armstrong products andservices are also helping to protect the environment.
Armstrong has been sharing know-how since weinvented the energy-efficient inverted bucket steamtrap in 1911. In the years since, customers’ savingshave proven again and again that knowledge notshared is energy wasted.

Helping You Make the Most of Your ResourcesArmstrong pressure reducing valves(PRVs) and temperature regulatorshelp you manage steam, air andliquid systems safely and efficiently. And assure uninterrupted productiv-ity—by maintaining constant pres-sure or temperature for processcontrol. In short, Armstrong productsmake using resources safe andproductive…as well as environmen-tally sound.
For decades, Armstrong hasdevoted itself to learning—andsharing—all it can about energyconservation as it relates to steamequipment. As part of our product/service network, PRVs and tempera-ture regulators represent expandedoptions for a reliable Armstrongsolution.
PRV TypesSteam, liquids and gases usuallyflow at high pressures to the pointsof final use. At these points, apressure reducing valve lowers thepressure for safety and efficiencyand to match the requirements of theapplication. There are three typesof pressure reducing valves.
Direct Acting. The simplest ofPRVs, the direct acting type oper-ates with either a flat diaphragm orconvoluted bellows. Since it is self-contained, it does not need an externalsensing line downstream to operate. It is the smallest and most economi-cal of the three types and designedfor low to moderate flows. Accuracyof direct acting PRVs is typically +10%of the downstream set point.
Internally Piloted Piston-Operated. This type of PRV incor-porates two valves—a pilot andmain valve—in one unit. The pilotvalve has a design similar to thedirect acting valve. The dischargefrom the pilot valve acts on top of apiston which opens the main valve. This design makes use of inletpressure in opening a larger mainvalve than could otherwise beopened. As a result, there is agreater capacity per line size andgreater accuracy (+5%) than withthe direct acting valve. As withdirect acting valves the pressureis sensed internally eliminating theneed for an external sensing line.
Externally Piloted. In this type, double diaphragms replace thepiston of the internally piloteddesign. This increased diaphragmarea can open a larger main valve, allowing a greater capacity per linesize than the internally piloted valve. In addition, the diaphragms are moresensitive to pressure changes, andthat means accuracy of +1%.This greater accuracy is due to thelocation, external of the valve, ofthe sensing line where there is lessturbulence. This valve also offersthe flexibility to use different typesof pilot valves (i.e., pressure, temperature, air loaded, solenoidor combination).

Direct ActingFor Steam, Air, and Non-Corrosive Gas Service
The simplest of pressure reducingvalves, the direct acting typeoperates with either a flat diaphragmor convoluted bellows. Since it is
self-contained, it does not need anexternal sensing line downstream tooperate. It is the smallest and mosteconomical of the three types and is
designed for low to moderate flows.Accuracy of direct acting PRVs istypically +10%.
Bronze body forcorrosion resistance.
Convoluted phosphorbronze bellows allowssmaller body size thanconventional direct=actingdiaphragm PRVs.
Stainless steel stem andbronze body minimize thesticking common withconventional values.
Hardened stainless steelvalve and seat withspring return to assuretight shutoff.
Integral mesh strainereliminates fouling due to dirt.
Integral sensing port toelimiante piping of
external sensing line.
Downstream pressuresensed outside the
bellows vs. inside, whichassures bellows integrity
and longer bellows life.
Interchangeable rangespring is easily changed
to different pressureby removing four (4)
cap screws.
Plastic cap doesn'tabsorb heat so it won't
burn an operator'shands. Permits changing
of set pressure withouttools. Simply lift cap and
turn to desired setting.

Internally PilotedFor Steam, Air, and Non-Corrosive Gas Service
This type of PRV incorporates twovalves—a pilot and main valve—in one unit. The pilot valve has adesign similar to the direct actingvalve. The discharge from the pilot
valve acts on top of a piston whichopens the main valve. This designmakes use of inlet pressure inopening a larger main valve thancould otherwise be opened directly.
As a result, there is a greatercapacity per line size and greateraccuracy (+5%) than with thedirect acting valve.
Internally Piloted
Removable cap to alloweasy adjustment.
Enclosed spring chambereliminates diaphragm orspring fouling due toatmospheric conditions.
Inlet screen minimizes foulingof pilot value due to dirt.
Dual seating surfacesconstructed from hardenedstainless steel reduce wiredrawing on low loadapplications adding to along service life.

Carbon rings to minimizepiston seizing.
Internal sensing porteliminates downstream
piping, allowing easyinstallation in tight spots.

Capacities for Steam, Air, and Non-Corrosive Gas
GP-100, GP-32, GP-18/28, GP-1NOTES: For GP-100, GP-32 capacities, multiply Table 16-1 values by factor listed in Table 16-2.
For GP-31A/32A air capacities (SCFM), multiply steam capacities for GP-31/32 by 0.36.For GP-18A/28A/1A air capacities (SCFM), multiply steam capacities by 0.36.

Interchangeable springs—regardless of valve size—means more flexibility in applications.
Available in both integral and remote
mounted pilot.
Enclosed spring chamber eliminates dirt fouling.
Dual stainless steel diaphragms provide corrosion resistance.
All cast mating parts are male and female to reduce the chance of leaks at gasket surfaces and assure proper alignment.
Ductile iron body provides a wider range of applications than cast iron and offers a less costly option to cast steel.
Integral strainer protects the pilot valve from failure due to dirt.
Easily removable copper tubing permits troubleshooting while
valve is in line.
Easy access to main valve for quick inspection
or maintenance by removing main valve
spring and screen and lifting valve from stem. No
special tools needed.
Design eliminates copper tubing from passing around
the bottom diaphragm housing, minimizing
chance of damage during shipping or installation.
For Steam Service
Externally Piloted
This type is similar to the internallypiloted piston-operated valve in thata pilot and main valve are utilized. However, double diaphragmsreplace the piston. This increaseddiaphragm area can open a largermain valve, allowing a greater
capacity per line size than theinternally piloted piston-operatedvalve. In addition, the diaphragmsare more sensitive to pressurechanges which results in accuracyof +1%. This greater accuracy is dueto the positioning of the sensing line
downstream where there is lessturbulence. This valve also offersthe flexibility to use different typesof pilot valves (i.e., pressure, tem-perature, air loaded, solenoidor combination).

OBK-2000Pneumatic Temperature Pilot
All dimensions and weights are approximate. Use certified print for exact dimensions.
A compact pneumatic temperaturepilot with broad temperature ranges, the OBK-2000 can be remotelylocated away from the regulatorvalve, an advantage not availablewith a conventional capillary system.
Typical applications include instan-taneous or storage tank waterheaters, air make-up units andmanufacturing process operationssuch as parts washing, die castingand plastic molding.
Capable of reverse or direct-actingoperation, the OBK-2000 featuresa simple design with fewer movingparts for trouble-free operation.Other features include supply andcontrol pressure gauges, a ruggedcast brass housing, and precise andrapid response to temperature
changes. Brass, stainless steelbulbs and separate wells areavailable.
Reverse-Acting Operation—For HeatingDuring operation, a temperaturechange in the medium beingcontrolled creates a changein the length of the sensitivitytube. An increase in tempera-ture lengthens the sensitivitytube (1) and moves the invarrod (2) from the lever (3).The lever pivots at point Band is moved so the exhaustvalve (4) is opened by thespring at (D). This lever actiondecreases the supply air atpoint (S) in the control lineat point (R) and closes theregulator valve. A decrease
in temperature shortens thesensitivity tube at point (1) andmoves the invar rod against thelever point (3). The lever at thispoint moves against the springat point (D) to close the exhaustvalve at point (4). This leveraction increases the pressurein the control line at point (R)and opens the valve.

The sensitivity adjustment screwat point (6) regulates the rateof flow of the supply air to thecontroller to a change in tem-perature. Turning the screwclockwise increases the sensitiv-ity by reducing the flow andincreasing the response time.Turning the screw counterclock-wise decreases the sensitivityby increasing flow and reducingthe response time. Valvecloses on air failure, makingit fail-safe.

GP-2000RFor Steam Back Pressure Regulation
The GP-2000R is a high performanceexternally piloted throttling backpressure valve for large capacityapplications. Typical applications
would include those systems utiliz-ing flash steam for low pressureheating or processes. The GP-2000Rvalves will function to maintain a
constant upstream pressure. This valve is not a safety valveand should not be used forthat purpose.
All dimensions and weights are approximate. Use certified print for exact dimensions.

Points to Remember When Installing
Drain condensate at inlet of pressure/temperatureregulator with inverted bucket steam trap.
Protect temperature regulating valve from dirt andscale by installing strainer with 100 mesh screen atinlet of valve.
Install shutoff valves on either side of the regulatingvalve along with a by-pass line for maintenancepurposes.
Install vacuum breaker after the outlet of equipmentand before the steam trap.
Temperature Regulators
Install sensor so it is fully immersed in the fluidbeing heated.
If temperature well is used, apply heat transfermedium to sensor before insertion into well.
Place thermometer into system in close proximityto temperature sensor for accurate valveadjustment.
If possible, do not elevate condensate after steamtrap.
Determine pressure setting before temperaturesetting (OB-2000PT only).

Application Data—Pressure Reducing Valves
Typical External Pressure Pilot Parallel Reduction Station. When seasonal load swings vary widely, two valvesare commonly installed in parallel with the large valve being sized for two-thirds of the total load and the smallvalve handling one-third of the total load. The small valve’s set point is set at a slightly higher pressure than thelarge valve.
Typical External Pressure Pilot Two Stage Reduction. This system is recommended when pressure reductionratio exceeds capabilities of a single valve.
