Help to keep things green

Estate caretaker Ian Gibson prepares to mow a lawn.

Gardens around the town will be looking smarter thanks to a new scheme to tidy up the area.Housing company Dale & Valley Homes is introducing the scheme to help people keep on top of their gardens throughout the year.Council tenants will be eligible for the new garden maintenance service, although they will be charged.Pat Wanless, director of housing operations for Dale & Valley Homes, said, “We know some people have diffi culty maintaining their gardens for a variety of reasons and we have been looking at helping out. Rather than creating com-plicated rules over who can have help and who can not we decided to open up the service to all customers.“There is a charge for this service, which ranges from £3 to £6.50 per week, depending on the size of the garden, but we feel the service is value for money and will help a lot of people, particularly the elderly and those with dis-

abilities.”Customers can apply for the service either by completing an online form

at www.daleandvalley-homes.co.uk or by calling the housing services team on 0800 0830 333.

Villagers want new development approvalResidents of Witton Park are urging the council to approve proposals for 31 new homes and a shop to be built on disused land in the village. Although planning offi cers have rec-ommended that planning permission should be refused, local homeowners living near the site have said they would welcome the new development and urged the committee to reconsider.A document supporting the new build has been signed by many locals in support of the project. The affordable housing devel-

opment would comprise of 31 two to three bedroomed homes, including nine bungalows and a small shop being built on the unused land, which has been described as “an eyesore”.Applicant Terry Jacques said, “They would all be affordable houses, an ideal solution for ordinary people wanting to get on the property ladder. Seventy two people in the village have signed a petition in favour of the plans.”Clifford Howe, who lives on Park Road opposite where the proposed development would be built said, “It

would be brilliant to have the shop and the bungalows for the older people. Everyone on the street wants the development to go ahead.”He continued saying, “People cannot afford the big houses, they are too expensive. I was born and bred here and my daughter wants to move into a house here but she can’t afford them. Witton Park is a really nice place but this piece of land on Park Road is the worst part of the village, it is an eyesore. Something needs to be done with it.”

Bishop Auckland mayor Lesley Zair was on hand last week to present a lovely bunch of flowers to sprightly centenarian Mrs Mary West from Escomb Road.Mary reached the wonderful age of 100 years on 18th April.Born in Shildon, she married Charles in 1933 meeting at the show-field in Shildon when he took her on one of the rides. They moved to their current home in Bishop Auckland when she was 22. The couple used to go down to Escomb Road every Wednesday afternoon, on Charles’ half day to see their home being built.Charles worked at the Co-op in Newgate Street for 58 years, starting when he was 14 and retiring when he was 72. Mary left school when she was only 12 to look after her poorly mother. During the war she worked for two years as an Aycliffe

Angel, toiling in the munitions factory. She later moved to Alness in the Highlands of Scotland to be with her husband Charles, who was a wireless mechanic there during the war. Mary and Charles did everything together with people saying they were inseparable. Unfortunate-ly, Charles died 11 years ago. Mary said “Charles was

the love of my life and I missed him so much. I never thought I would get over him, but you have to carry on”. On her birthday, around 40 family and friends held a special party in her home. Nephew Barry Walker said “Mary was not only an Aycliffe Angel, she is a true angel without wings, dedicating herself to look after her home and Uncle Charles so well.”

Cullen, of Snowdon Court, Bishop Auckland was said to have a signifi-cant record with the court and was currently serving an intensive supervision order for other offences. In mitigation it was said that Cullen had had made full admission upon his arrest stating that the games would

The defendant was said to be in financial difficulty having borrowed £250 from a loan shark for which he had so far repaid £2000 and had been the victim of enormous abuse and very real threats. Magistrates revoked the current community order and imposed a new one to run for 15 months, part of the course to include an element of “thinking skills” and ordered Cullen to pay part compensation to Sains-bury’s.

Funding boost for loan scheme

A scheme providing free fun and games for disabled youngsters has been handed a funding boost. The Learning Library, which loans out specialist toys and equipment for people aged up to 19 years-old with physical and learning disabilities in the Bishop Auckland and Shildon areas, has received £1,370 to buy extra stock.Parents and carers who use the scheme receive a visit from an outreach worker once every six weeks and can borrow up to six items at a time.

Many of the items available through the scheme can help children’s overall wellbeing and develop-ment, improving their social skills, confidence and educational achieve-ments.The money for extra equipment was donated by county councillors David Hancock and Garry Huntington from their neighbourhood budgets with support from Bishop Auckland and Shildon Area Action Partnership (AAP).Alan Boddy, chairman of the AAP’s task and

The West End Experience!

Mayor Of Bishop Auckland Cllr Lesley Zair (left), Sue Richardson (right) and Gary Adam Watson (back right) with the children from Richardson’s Dance Studio.

On Tuesday 19th April and Wednesday 20th April, children from Richardson’s Dance Studio in Bishop Auckland were treated to two fabulous days of workshops by leading West End Dance Star, Gary Adam Watson.Gary, who originates from Sunderland, has starred in Shows such as Les Miserables, Saturday Night Fever, Evita and Cats and featured in the 25th An-niversary of Les Miserables spectacular at the 02 in London. He will shortly be off on a nationwide tour with the new Michael Ball show, Heroes. The children, who are aged from 6 to 16 years, enjoyed the unforgettable experience of working

with Gary on some of the original choreography from the shows Mama Mia! and Chicago with the added bonus of some unexpected singing lessons.Everyone was also treated to a full on West End Experience of working on Cats the musical. To bring it all to life children then created their own Cats characters with the help of Theatrical Make-up artist, Naomi Watson. No show would be complete without a fabulous poster to advertise it, so Brian Ellwood, from Barretts Pho-tography in Fore Bondgate, kindly helped the children create their poster for the occasion. At the end of the day all

of the childen performed their Jellicle Cats Dance for parents and the Mayor of Bishop Auckland, Lesley Zair, at the Studio. This time around the experience was only available to Richardson’s Dance Studio Members, however, Gary Watson and Sue & Gary Richardson are planning to bring The West End Experience Days and the very popular Glee and Pop Video workshops back in time for the School Summer Holidays. These workshops will be open to everyone who just loves to dance and have fun. Keep an eye on the Studio’s website for details available shortly www.richardsonsdancestudio.co.uk

Bustin’ a move in BishopBudding young dancers in Bishop Auckland are able to bust some moves thanks to funding from the Bishop Auckland and Shildon Area Action Partnership (AAP).The Four Clocks Youth Project and Groundwork funded a recent street dance exhibition in the town centre and free dance workshops, which proved very popular.Research showed there were no free classes locally and cost was a barrier

for local parents. Local children were very enthu-siastic about the exhibition and parents were thrilled to have something on offer, that children were interested in and where cost wasn’t an issue. Demand for further sessions was huge so £720 has been set aside from the AAP’s Children and Young People’s Small Grants Fund to enable more sessions for young people to get involved.

Sue Elms, senior youth worker with the Four Clocks Youth Project, said, “We are very grateful to the Bishop Auckland and Shildon AAP for their funding which will enable us to continue to offer the sessions free of charge for another 24 weeks.”To get involved in the sessions, contact The Four Clocks Youth Project on 01388 665038 or email [email protected].
