b. The purpose of this manual is to familiarize youwith the maintenance functions to be performed atthe Aviation Unit and Intermediate Maintenancelevels. The Table of Contents for this manual isprovided to assist in determining the chapter in themanual in which individual functions are covered.This manual provides all essential information forpersonnel to accomplish Aviation Unit andIntermediate Maintenance on the complete airframe,its components, and systems, excluding armamentand avionics subsystems, as indicated for AviationUnit and Intermediate Maintenance activities in theMaintenance Allocation Chart (MAC). Refer toAppendix B.

Personnel will assure proper maintenance has beenperformed by verifying dimensions and tolerancescontained throughout this technical manual havebeen complied with.

P - 3 . D E S C R I P T I O N .

A. Fuselage. The helicopter is a two-place assaulttype with a narrow fuselage, single main and tail

rotors, short wings, and provisions for a variety ofarmament, The forward fuselage is built up on twomain longitudinal beams with lateral bulkheads,floors, shear panels, and decks of honeycomb panelconstruction, forming a box beam. Crewcompartments are arranged in tandem, with the pilotseated behind and above the gunner, and are coveredby a transparent canopy with two doors. Both doorsare sections of the canopy, hinged at top with thegunner door opening at left and the pilot door openingat right side. Both seats are protected by armor onbacks, seats and sides of supports. The compartmentarea is ventilated by forced air from a transmission-drive blower. The short wings provide support fora rmament mount ing py lons and a lso a idmaneuverability by providing lift at higher airspeeds.

b. Tailboom Section. The tailboom section,attached to the forward fuselage by four bolts, is atapered semimonocoque structure with a vertical finslanting up and aft at the rear end to support the tailrotor. Ballast is added to the aft end of tailboom tocontrol helicopter center of gravity limits. Lead shot isadded inside the tailskid on coded helicopters. Tailrotor driveshafts and gearboxes are mounted underrovers along the top of the tailboom and front of thevertical fin. A controllable elevator is also mounted onthe tailboom.

c. Propulsion System. The propulsion systemconsists of a gas turbine engine, main driveshaft,transmission and mast, main rotor, and tail rotor withdriveshafts and gearboxes. The transmission andengine are mounted on the fuselage aft of the crewcompartment and covered by cowling and fairing. Theengine drives the transmission through the maindriveshaft, rototating the mast and main rotor. Poweris also taken off the transmission to drive the tailrotor, which compensates for main rotor torque tocontrol the helicopter heading. Fuel tanks consist oftwo interconnected celIs, located in the fuselage.

d. Flight Controls. Flight controls are directmechanical linkages from sticks and pedals at pilotand gunner stations, assisted by hydraulic cylinderspowered by transmission-driven hydraulic pumps. Astabilization and control augmentation system is alsoincorporated in the control linkage to steady thehelicopter during use of armament.

e. Armament Provisions. Armament provisionsinclude mounting, wiring, and hydraulic lines for anarmament turret under the forward end of thefuselage, an ammunition compartment immediatelyaft of the turret location, sights and control panels at

crew stations, and mounting pylons for externalarmament pods on each wing. Helicopterscoded utilize hydraulically operated armamentturrets. Helicopters code and utilizeelectrically operated armament turrets.

f. Landing Gear. Lending gear is skid type witharched cross tubes attached to the fuselage. Exposedportions of cross tubes are covered by streamlinedfairings to reduce drag. A tail skid is provided to warnthe pilot in the event of a tail-low landing.

P-4. Destruction of Army Material to PreventEnemy Use.

For destruction of Army material to prevent enemyuse, refer to TM 750-244-1-5.

P-5. Maintenance of Forms and Records.

Maintenance of forms, records, and reports which areto be used by maintenance personnel at all mainte-nance levels are listed in and prescribed by DA PAM738-751.

P-6. Authority for Substitution.

Substitution or interchange of items of materiel formaintenance of Department of the Army helicoptershall not be authorized, nor shall orders be issued forshipment. Substitution or interchangeability shall onlybe authorized by US Army Aviation Systems Command(AVSCOM).

P-7. Special Tools and Equipment.

Aviation Unit and Intermediate Maintenance specialtools and equipment will be found in TM 55-1520-236-23P (Repair Parts and Special Tools List). Use ofspecial tools and equipment for complex tasks isdescribed in this manual.

P-8. Calibration.

Equipment requiring calibration shall be indicatedand reference made to publications containing theapplicable procedures.

a. Helicopter components, accessories, andinstruments requiring calibration shall be specified inChapter 1.

b. Special tools and test equipment shall becalibrated as specified in TB 750-25, Army Metrologyand Calibration System.

C H A P T E R 1

A I R C R A F T G E N E R A L

SECTION I.

1-1. SERVICING.

1-2. DESCRIPTION – SERVICING.

Servicing information and procedures are presentedby system or components in the following paragraphs.Points used infrequent servicing and replenishment offuels, oil, hydraulic fluid, and other materials are shownin figure 1-1.

1-3. SERVICING – FUEL SYSTEM.

a. The fuel supply tank consists of two cells,located in the fuselage forward and aft of the wings,interconnected by a crossover and vented through acommon outlet line. Each cell has a sump and a fuelpump with drains (figure 1-1) accessible through doorsin the fuselage lower skin. The fuel tank filler cap andstatic ground receptacle serve both tanks.The cap and adapter assembly allows for gravity

refueling. A closed circuit fueling receiver allowsfor dosed port or open port gravity refueling.

b. Total tank capacity for the fuel system is 262Us. gallons, and normal service capacity is 260 Us.gal fens.

Servicing personnel shall comply withall safety precautions and proceduresspecified in FM 10-68, Aircraft Refuelingfield manual.

c. Closed Circuit Refueling (Power Off).

(1) Refer to Figure 1-1 for fuel filter location.

(2) Assure that fire guard is in position withfire extinguisher.

(3) Ground servicing unit to ground stake.

(4) Ground servicing unit to helicopter.

(5) Ground fuel nozzle to ground receptaclelocated adjacent to fuel receptacle on helicopter.

(6) Remove fuel filler cap, and assure thatrefueling module is in locked position (refer to figure1-1.1).

SERVICING

(7) Remove nozzle cap and insert nozzle intofuel receptacle and lock into position.

(6) Activate flow control handle to ON orFLOW position. Fuel flow will automatically shut offwhen fuel cdl is full. Just prior to normal shut off, fuelflow may cycle several times, as maximum fuel levelis reached.

(9) Assure that flow control handle is in OFFor NO FLOW position and remove nozzle.

(10) Replace fuel nozzle cap.

(11) Replace fuel filler cap.

(12) Disconnect fuel nozzle ground.

(13) Disconnect ground from helicopter toservicing unit.

(14) Disconnect servicing unit ground fromground stake.

(15) Return fire extinguisher to designatedlocation.

c.1. Gravity or Open-Port Refueling (Power Off).

(1) Refer to Figure 1-1 for fuel filler location.





(6) Remove fuel filler cap.

(7) Using latch tool, attached to filler capcable open refueling module if equipped with dosedcircuit receptacle (refer to figure 1-1.1).

(8) Remove nozzle cap and insert nozzle intofuel receptacle.

(9) Initiate fuel flow by squeezing trigger gripon nozzle. When using a CCR open-port/gravitynozzle adapter; prior to squeezing trigger grip, actuateflow control handle on CCR nozzle to ON or FLOWposition.

(10) Closely monitor fuel quantity; when fuel isat desired level, release trigger grip to shut-off/stopfuel flow. When using a CCR open-portUgravity nozzleadapter, actuate flow control handle to OFF or NOFLOW position. Remove nozzle.


(12) Close refueling module by pulling cableuntil latch is in locked position, if equipped with dosedcircuit receptacle (refer to figure 1-1.1).



(15) Disconnectservicing unit.

(16) Disconnectground stake.

(17) Return firelocation.

c.2. Rapid (Hot) Refueling (Closed Circuit).

(1) Before RAPID Refueling.

(a) Throttle – Idle.

(b) FORCE TRIM Switch – FORCE TRIM.

In case of helicopter fire, observe fireemergency procedures In Chapter 9 ofTM 55-1520-236-10.

(2) During RAPID Refueling. A crewmember,shall observe the refueling operation (performed byauthorized refueling personnel) and stand fire guard asrequired. One crewmember shall remain in the heli-copter to monitor controls. Only emergency radiotransmission should be made during (rapid) refueling.

(3) Refer to figure 1-1 for fuel filler Iocation.





(8) Remove fuel filler cap, end assure that re-fueling module is in dosed position (refer to figure1-1.1.)

(9) Remove nozzle cap and insert nozzle intofuel receptacle and lock into position.

(10) Activate flow control handle to ON orFLOW position. Fuel flow will automatically shut offwhen fuel cell is full. Just prior to normal shutoff, fuelflow may cycle several times, as maximum fuel levelis reached.

(11) Assure that flow control handle is in OFFor NO FLOW position and remove nozzle.




(15) Disconnect ground from helicopter toservicing unit. AFTER RAPID REFUELING. The pilotshall be advised by the refueling crew that fuel cap issecure and grounding cables have been removed.

(16) Disconnect servicing unit ground fromground stake.

(17) Return fire extinguisher to designatedlocation.

c.3. RAPID (HOT) GRAVITY Refueling.

(1) Before RAPID Refueling.

(a) Throttle – Idle.

(b) FORCE TRIM Switch – FORCE TRIM.
