College Adds degree Program in life science

Central Maine Community is now offering an associate degree program in Life Science. This new program provides students with a broad, general survey of scientifically accumulated knowledge, with a focus on biological and life sciences.

Students completing this degree could enter the workforce as scientific technicians or transfer into science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) majors at four-year colleges and universities. The Life Science program provides

appropriate course sequencing for efficient transfer, and reinforces and deepens core learning across the curriculum.

“The College is very excited to be launching the Life Sciences program this fall. This program will provide increased opportunities for graduates and has already enabled the CMCC to expand our transfer relationships with four-year institutions, notes Betsy Libby, dean of academic affairs. “We are working with several universities to establish transfer agreements for students. The University of New England will be accepting all Life Science credits as applied coursework. This not only allows for a seamless transition, but in the end saves our graduates time and money,” Libby added.

The 61 credit program will include 34 credits in lab science consisting of two semester sequences in Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy & Physiology, and Organic Chemistry. Students seeking admission must have a high school diploma or equivalent, and be qualified to enroll in College Writing (or College Writing Seminar) and College Algebra.

Concurrent with the launch of the Life Science program, CMCC will open a new academic building on campus this fall. The fourth floor of the building will house a state-of-the-art Organic Chemistry lab.

More information is available online at www.cmcc.edu. Anyone interested is encouraged to contact the Admissions Office at 755-5273 or [email protected].

Crosby is CmCC student of the year

Brianna May Crosby of Wayne has been selected as CMCC’s 2015 Student of the Year. She and six other Maine community college students were honored recently for their academic success and campus and community involvement at a ceremony in Augusta hosted by the Maine Community College System (MCCS) Board of Trustees.

The award winners were selected by college faculty and staff. Each of the students will be awarded a John H. Lapoint, Jr. Leadership Award in the amount of $1,000. Mr. Lapoint was president of UF Strainrite in Lewiston and a trustee of the Maine Community College System. After his death in 1995, his widow, Jana Lapoint, served on the Board from 1995 to 2006 and helped establish the fund for the annual awards.

Crosby graduated with President’s Honors from the Culinary Arts certificate program last year. She immediately resumed her studies and will earn an associate’s degree in Business Administration and Management this year with a perfect 4.0 gPA. A member of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, Crosby plans to travel overseas and continue her studies at the baccalaureate level in the fall.

relations manager at Procter & gamble in Auburn. In his often humorous address, Mr. Malinowski encouraged the graduates to remember those who have helped them along the way. “As you go forward, let others continue to help you through life, they have travelled

similar roads – listen to their advice. Then reach back and help the next generation as they come along.”

More than 550 students are graduating from CMCC this year. Read more about commencement in the sun Journal. The commencement program, which contains the

names of all graduates, is available online at www.cmcc.edu.

No one can ever take away the knowledge you’ve gained here in your time at college. Use it wisely, give back to people who helped you get here, pay it forward to those coming next, and make the world a better place.

How to succeed in Business at CmCC

Business Administration & Management students learned a lot about business this spring in the new Capstone course. By pretending to be executives of simulated high-tech companies, student teams competed against each other while trying to build the most successful “sensor” company.

Instructor Mike Henry explained that each team had to perform all parts of running a business, including research and development, production, studying the market, sales forecasts and promotion. And since their companies were publicly traded, the students had to keep an eye on the stock market.

sun Journal Education reporter Bonnie Washuk spent some time with the class and you can read her article here.

You can also view a brief video on this course.
