The Vice Chancellor, University of Medical Sciences, Ondo City, Prof. Friday Okonofua FAS was on Tuesday, Nov 1, 2016 celebrated by the University of Benin with the gathering of academic and other great personalities at a colloquium which held at the UNIBEN main aiditorium. Okonofua was celebrated alongside the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, ex-Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola; Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Defence, Amd. UNIMED inaugurates School of Public Health

The University of Medical Sciences, Ondo has inaugurated a 13-man board of the School of public health, the first in Nigeria. The board has as its Chairman, the Vice Chancellor, UNIMED, Prof. Friday Okonofua and the Deputy Registrar(Academics), Mr Adeyinka Adekalu as Secretary. Other members are Prof. A.O Fatusi, Prof. M. Asuzu, Prof. O. A Ladipo, Dr. Dayo Adeyanju, Dr. Dabesaki Mac-Ikemenjima, Dr. Mairo Mandara, Dr. Adhiambo Odaga, Dr. Mike Egboh, Dr.(Mrs) R. Nwuba, Dr. (Mrs) Y.A. Jeff-Agboola and a representative of UNFPA. In his opening remark the VC said the goal of the University is ‘to become a hub of high quality medical research, service delievery and training in a very near future’. ‘‘ Interestingly, this university was set up by a state government that over the last 8 years has taken health as its primary area of achievement. Ondo State has made phenomenal milestone in the provision of comprehensive healthcare,’’ Okonofua said. The VC stated that Ondo State Government has excelled in the provision of qualitative health services for the public. ‘I use to be an adviser to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and during that period, I had the opportunity of travelling to every State of the country. I can say without any fear of being contradicted that Ondo State in terms of health has some of the most highly rated political will and commitment to address health issues, hence the need to train students and develop the manpower needed to sustain the achievements of this administration’, he said. Members of the board thereafter brainstormed on developing strategic plan for the School of Public Health towards attaining international standards in addresing local development challenges especially for youths and women in West

They also identified the courses and curricular as well as methods of operation for the School of Public Health and reviewed architectural briefs and drawings for the construction of the school, as well as making recommendations on fund-raising strategies for building the school to World Class status.
