‘This is my Son, the Beloved.’...

Jesus’ baptism marks his first appearance

in public ministry. He comes among sinners,

people longing for God, who have already

heard about his coming. One can imagine

the hush of those gathered around the river

Jordan as they realise the man who comes

from among them is the one they have

heard about. Jesus defies the expectations

of John the Baptist, asking to be baptised.

He is plunged into the water even though

there is no sin to be cleansed. As he resurfaces,

there is a moment which confirms that the

same man who made a humble entry into

the crowd of people, a humble entry into

humanity, is in fact God. A beautiful moment
