The projects, 1) better utilize the limitations of the property while creating a larger and more comfortable day room (activity center) for the Nikkei Village area, 2) allow for the relocation of the exercise room to the first floor, provid- ing a safer exercise environment for our residents to enjoy 3) create addition- al parking for visitors and guest utilizing a portion of the grass area that is not used by the residents. The plan is to begin the additional parking phase first within the next month or two; followed by the second phase, Nikkei Village expansion and exercise room relocation starting in June. We estimate that the second phase of con- struction will take from eight to ten weeks to complete. There should be a minimal amount of impact to resident services during the construction work. During construction and remodeling of the Nikkei Village area, the Nikkei Vil- lage dining and activity area will be closed off for safety and security purpos- es. The hallway door will also remain locked and closed during construction. All construction workers will enter site from the rear outside yard entrance of Nikkei Village and will not impact resi- dent’s safety. Dining and activities for Nikkei Village residents will be temporar- ily moved to the solarium for the duration of phase II construction. As a result, few changes to assisted living activities may occur. These changes will be an- nounced at the resident council meeting prior to the beginning of construction, as well as, on the monthly activity cal- endar, resident bulletin board, and daily table reminders. A NEW LOOK... At Nikkei Senior

The expansion of Nikkei Village, for-merly known as, Memory Support, the relocation and transformation of the exercise room and creating additional parking spaces, are three projects we will begin soon. The projects will be ful-ly funded by the Oya Koko Foundation through generous donations received from the Nikkei Village Board of Direc-tors, individual community supporters, residents and their families.

The projects, 1) better utilize the limitations of the property while creating a larger and more comfortable day room (activity center) for the Nikkei Village area, 2) allow for the relocation of the exercise room to the first floor, provid-ing a safer exercise environment for our residents to enjoy 3) create addition-al parking for visitors and guest utilizing a portion of the grass area that is not used by the residents.

The plan is to begin the additional parking phase first within the next month or two; followed by the second phase, Nikkei Village expansion and exercise room relocation starting in June. We estimate that the second phase of con-struction will take from eight to ten weeks to complete. There should be a minimal amount of impact to resident services during the construction work.

During construction and remodeling of the Nikkei Village area, the Nikkei Vil-lage dining and activity area will be closed off for safety and security purpos-es. The hallway door will also remain locked and closed during construction. All construction workers will enter site from the rear outside yard entrance of Nikkei Village and will not impact resi-dent’s safety. Dining and activities for Nikkei Village residents will be temporar-ily moved to the solarium for the duration of phase II construction. As a result, few changes to assisted living activities may occur. These changes will be an-nounced at the resident council meeting prior to the beginning of construction, as well as, on the monthly activity cal-endar, resident bulletin board, and daily table reminders.

We appreciate your patience and understanding during this transitional time. Our goal is to provide a safe and secure environment that our residents may enjoy. We look forward to the beneficial changes and continuing growth of our community.

Don’t Be April Fooled: Health Tips from the Experts

Most people, especially the elderly, tend to slow down during winter. So in the spring when nature is waking up again, is the per-fect time to get moving again. However, most experts agree that being active all year round is the key to good health. Two crucial factors for health in seniors are hav-ing a good diet and daily exercise.

Exercise If you are over 50 years of age, have a chronic health condition, or have never ex-ercised before, you should consult your doctor before starting any workout program. Our community has programs, like tai chi, exercise, Wii bowling, Bon dance, etc. The cardiovascular system will benefit from all these types of exercise activities, involving many different muscle groups and improv-ing stamina. Taking the stairs is an exer-cise that will engage the muscles needed for keeping balance, especially when rising from a chair. Or a simple walk down the Oya koko pathway, because REMEMBER, at an older age, every little bit counts! Some caution is advised for seniors who work out - shoes should have rubber soles to prevent falling down on slippery grounds, sunscreen should be used if exercising out-doors on a sunny day and drinking plenty of fluids is necessary to restore the fluids lost due to heat and sweating.

Eating habits As people grow old they need less calories, therefore needing to eat less. This is why it is vital that the meals are well-balanced. Meals should include all the important food groups and be focused on whole grains, fruits and vegetables. A tip for obtaining a balanced meal is to divide the plate into two halves. One should contain vegetables and the other starchy foods like rice, potato and pasta, along with sources of protein, such as, fish or lean meat. Seniors should have at least three dairy meals a day, preferably skimmed milk and low fat yogurt, because they need calcium and vitamin D to protect their bones. As for beverages, try to avoid sugary libations, like soda pops and coffee and drink water or freshly squeezed juices.

April 2013

Dear Residents, Families and Friends,

Our work continues on the expansion of Nikkei Village, the memory support area. The soil has been test-

ed, and the permit process is moving along. Oya Koko Foundation Board members Gail Maeda, Naomi

Nagasawa and Karen Yokomizo are working with architect, Toyo Okamoto, to finalize plans, as well as

selecting appliances, chairs, cabinets and fixtures. They have researched extensively to ensure the best

price and quality while considering the needs of the residents. I will continue to share an update on the

projects monthly, and will let you know when the actual work will begin.

Please see the list below which acknowledges the generous donors from February and March.

There are still opportunities to donate to support Nikkei Seniors Garden. Donations of $1,000 or more

will be acknowledged on the Oya Koko wall opposite the solarium, and donations of $1,500 or more will

be recognized with an inscribed brick along the Tomodachi Way. There are donation forms on the table

under the Oya Koko wall if you are interested in supporting us at any level.

Once again, thank you for your continued support and generosity. There is still much to accomplish to

ensure that Nikkei Senior Gardens remains a model assisted care community, and we look forward to eve-

ryone’s assistance.

Sincerely,

Irene Sumida, President and Chair of the Board

Residents enjoyed an outing to Lake Balboa.

Unfortunately, due to hot weather and a busy day,

residents did not get to eat their delicious obento

made by Chef Masa, under the Sakura, however we

were still able to enjoy their beauty!

"Hanami" is the cen-

turies-old practice of

picnicking under a

blooming sakura or

ume tree. This tradi-

tion is so important

and popular in Japan,

that every year the

public, track the fore-

casted sakura zen-

sen, which means “cherry blossom front’ as it moves

northward up the archipelago with the approach of warm-

er weather via nightly forecasts following the weather seg-

ment of news programs. Sakura are only in bloom for a

week or two, so timing is crucial! The custom is said to

have started during the Nara Period (710–794) when it

was ume blossoms that people admired in the beginning.

But by the Heian Period (794–1185), cherry blossoms

came to attract more attention and hanami was synony-

mous with sakura. The custom was originally limited to

the elite of the Imperial Court, but soon spread to samurai

society and by the Edo period, to the common people too.
