2012-2013 Theme VerseThe theme for this year is "God is Enough," from Psalm 62:6: "He alone is my Rock and my Salva-tion; He is my Fortress, I will not be shaken.” (NIV)

New Curriculum for 2012-2013Rod Zach, Elementary Principal

Lincoln Christian continually strives to provide the most excellent educational experience possible to our students. One of the ways this is done is in the develop-ment of written curriculum that aligns with our mission and meets or exceeds national standards. In making these decisions, we kept the truth of the Gospel

as the predominant foundation and will insure that the truth is incorporated into every teaching opportunity and curricu-lum.

Lincoln Christian is thankful to the two donors who made it possible to purchase the updated curriculum in the Science and Math areas over the last year. What a blessing it is to have parents who provide insight, feedback and resources to meet the needs of the Lincoln Christian students and school.

After spending time and prayer on researching new Science

curriculum, we purchased the Bob Jones University Press Science curriculum for grades rst through twelfth. Teachers have been invigorated with the distinctly Christian curricu-lum and Biblical worldview it instills.

A curriculum committee made up of teachers, parents, and an administrator considered various Math curriculums and selected the McGraw Hill “My Math” for grades one through ve. In 2010, grades sixth through eighth began the McGraw Hill “Connections” Math. By using the McGraw Math series grades Kindergarten through eighth grade, this assures a seamless education.

Rocket Math will still be used as a supplemental curriculum in the elementary grades that involves ten-minutes-a-day, paper and pencil, worksheet-based, supplemental, math facts practice curriculum. It is a uniquely structured curricu-lum for the sequential practice and mastery of math facts. The McGraw Hill curriculum involves progressive technology that supports the Common Core standard. One of the most positive aspects of the curriculum is that it fosters collabora-tion along with added use of the math language that prepares students for the rapidly changing world we live in.

Now our committee is researching curriculum and best practices for Reading and Language Arts. The process the committee uses will determine what resource best assists teachers in proven instruction for the crucial and fundamen-tal area of reading.

We invite you to ask your student, student’s teacher or building principal for a look at our new curriculum!

New LEGO Robotics Club fuses fun and critical thinkingWe are proud to announce the addition of a LEGO Robotics Club to its extracurricular activities. The Lincoln Christian LEGO Robotics Club meets once a week to design, build and test our robots using LEGO MINDSTORMS® technology.

The club will be working with the First LEGO League (FLL) so that it will be eligible for competitions later in the year. Every year First LEGO League issues a challenge related to a problem scientists’ are currently trying to solve. As a team, students research the problem, come up with a solution, and program our robot to do certain tasks required of the competition.

First LEGO League allows students the opportunity to use math and science concepts and learn critical thinking and

presentation skills, all while also learning to work as a team.

We are excited to be representing Lincoln Christian School throughout the state of Nebraska as we compete. A special thanks to the donors that helped fund the club and provid-ed the needed hardware and software for the club.

We’re growing!Jill Baker, Admissions Director

We are pleased to report a year-over-year increase of 22 students, from 484 students to 506 in grades 1-12. This year saw the largest growth in rst, sixth, and ninth grades. Another area of growth was in our kindergarten as we saw enrollment grow to 50 students and the addition of a third kindergarten teacher.

The recent addition of a 3 year-old Preschool option and a 5-Day Kindergarten option has increased the retention rate in our elementary school. These students enrich our school because they are grounded in not only the fundamentals of learning, but the truths of God’s Word, and end up staying at Lincoln Christian for elementary school.

The overall retention rate this year was excellent at 92%. We are aware of the economic burdens of today and are grateful for our families that sacrice so that their children can have the many benets of a Christian education.

Hundreds gather for pep rally at Gateway MallGo Big Blue and time for some Back-to-School Spirit! For the second year in a row, Gateway Mall and West Gate Bank channeled the energy of the Friday night lights and the crowded stands and brought them to the Gateway Shop-ping Mall for an all-school pep rally.

On Monday, August 20, students, parents, faculty, and friends enjoyed free pizza, games, cheers, coach introduc-tions and Lincoln Christian band performances. Local KFRX morning show host Matt McKay served as the emcee.

Gateway Mall donates $1 to the Lincoln Christian Booster Club up to $500 per school for each person attending the pep rally on the school’s behalf. This includes students, faculty, parents, or anyone who stops by to check out the fun. Lincoln Christian had over 500 attendees at the pep rally for the second year in a row.

By sponsoring the pep rally, Gateway Mall hopes to provide a great community event that brings the Lincoln Christian family and friends together for a common goal of helping out their school and having some fun.

Changes made to enhance school securityGod has recently shown the school administration the need to examine and reinforce our building security. One immedi-ate change is that all outside doors will be locked and entry into Elementary and Secondary schools will be via a buzz-in video hookup.

The main entrance to both buildings will be open and monitored by sta during the time immediately prior to school starting and at dismissal time. The rest of the time, if you come to visit or volunteer at Lincoln Christian, you will stop at either front door, ring the buzzer, and identify yourself to the sta member who greets you. That person will buzz you in, and you will report to the oce as before. At the oce you will be asked to sign in and wear a lanyard while you're in the building and sign out when you leave.

We do regret the need for these changes, but we feel they are necessary to ensure the safety of students. Rest assured, while it might take a minute longer to get in the doorway, you will still encounter the same friendly welcome you've always received at Lincoln Christian.

Main entrances will now be secured during the day by a “buzz-in” system.

Sam NiedowSecondary Spanish & Math Teacher

Sam was born in Fulton, Missouri (a small town near Columbia) and graduated from Lincoln Christian High School in 2007. He attended

Hillsdale College in Michigan and is excited to be back as a Crusader!

Sam says that Lincoln Christian is just as great as when he attended. “There is still a serious commitment to Jesus Christ

among the sta and faculty,” he says. “They care that the students form their own deep commitment to Christ.”

How did Sam end up back at Lincoln Christian? A family friend happened to forward an email to Sam that said Lincoln Christian was looking for a Spanish teacher. He applied, and God did the rest!

Tommy (8), and Sam (6). Sheila is an alumna of Lincoln High School and graduated from the Teacher's College at UNL.

Sheila was a stay-at-home mom for the last ten years and loved it. She was not planning to go back to teaching, but

when a friend sent her a posting for the kindergarten position, it seemed to be from the Lord. She and her children all started on a new adventure at Lincoln Christian together this year.

“The sta here is amazing! So caring and welcoming,” says Sheila. The families here are so involved and connected. It's like one big extended family. It's hard to believe I’m new because everyone treats me like I’ve been here a while.”

Sheila loves to run and bake. “They cancel each other out, but both are therapeutic for me!” she says. She also loves to paint… rooms, not art.

“The sta here is amazing! So caring and welcoming.”

Neal gets to be Mr. Mom for his kids right after school. He picks the kids, gets them started on homework, and makes dinner. On the weekends he likes to load up the boys and the motorcycles and go dirt biking.

“The people at Lincoln Christian have been so nice and appreciative,” says Neal. “I love my job. It’s been a blessing to work around fellow Christians. I’ve grown closer to the Lord because of this facility and its people and want to thank every one of you for this opportunity.”

Kristy SchluckebierArt Teacher (Grades 5-8)

Kristy was born in Schuyler, Nebras-ka and is married to Jason. They have four kids: Brianne (16), Logan (12), Colby (10) ,and Adalyn (17 months). The day she got married to

would occasionally come up in the classroom and she was not allowed to discuss it and was instructed to have the kids change the subject.

“It’s so fullling to be able to openly talk about our love for Christ in school,” she says, “Having Christ at the center of the school makes such a huge, wonderful dierence. I love being here!”

Phil Boehr reaches 40 yearsIt is no secret that God has blessed Phil Boehr with the gift of teaching, singing, and writing music. His love for the Lord is evident and has been consistently displayed through his 40-year ministry at Lincoln Christian.

Preparing students to proclaim their love of Jesus by using their musical talents vocally and instrumentally brings great delight to Mr. Boehr’s heart. He exercises his passion for setting God’s Word and its principles to music by writing choruses that parallel the school chapel theme every year.

Lincoln Christian School families, students, and faculty continue to be blessed by Mr. Boehr’s ministry of music. Phil and his wife, Ann, were recently recognized for teaching 40 years at the All-School meeting on August 13. Funds were given to send Phil and Ann to Charleston, South Carolina in March, 2013 to celebrate 40 years of service to the school. To God be the Glory!

Remembering Tom DworakDr. Tom Dworak passed away on Tuesday, July 10, 2012, and is currently rejoicing in Heaven with his Savior. Tom loved the Lord, his family, Lincoln Christian School, its students and athletes.

Tom graduated from the University of Nebraska Dental College in 1945 and spent 57 years in the profession that he loved. In 1971, his life changed radically when he became a born again Christian, trusting Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord. In 1975, because he believed in the value of Christian education, the rst of his 14 grandchildren began attending Lincoln Christian. Tom was very active in the school for the next 37 years. Now the next generation of Dworaks are attending Lincoln Christian School. Tom was blessed to be married to Pat for almost 68 years. They have 4 children, 18 grandchildren, 55 great- grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

Tom rarely missed a Lincoln Christian boys or girls basketball game, and attended most of the football and volleyball games. He helped coach the boys’ JV and Varsity basketball teams in the early 1980's. In addition, his ministry of encour-agement through notes and letters overowed into the lives of our students, parents, teachers, and sta.

Lincoln Christian was a signicant part of his life and supporting the school gave him great joy. Tom and Pat were

inducted into the Lincoln Christian Hall of Honor on Septem-ber 17, 2010.

Choi one of ve walk-ons to receive scholarship

Seung Hoon Choi looked up at the clock, doing some quick math. The clock read 1:47. Add 14 hours to it. It was 3:47 A.M. back in South Korea, he said. Even so, Choi felt a wake-up call to his parents might be in order.

“I think they’ll like it.”

Yes, this would be one joyous phone call, with the senior left guard telling his parents he was one of ve Husker walk-ons who received a scholarship Saturday afternoon.. “It’s just a great feeling to walk on here from South Korea to America, from walk-on to getting a scholarship,” said Choi, the leading candidate to start at left guard. “It’s just so much of a blessing.”

Nebraska coach Bo Pelini said he’s proud of all the guys who received scholarships, praising their hard work and commit-ment. Choi’s journey is as remarkable as any. Having arrived in Lincoln for high school, he didn’t start playing football until his sophomore year at Lincoln Christian. From guring out the basics of a strange game to a football scholarship at Nebraska, it’s been a remarkable journey.

Many Hearts • One VisionCampaign Nears CompletionIn May, 2011 the Lincoln Christian School Board and Lincoln Christian Founda-tion began to lay the ground work for a capital campaign to raise $1 million dollars in a year. The School Board identied specic needs of the school which included expansion of the music space, the building of the rst track in school history, and the elimination of the remaining school debt. The campaign went public at the All-School meeting on August 15, 2011.

A little over one year later, $735,000 of the $1 million campaign goal has been raised for this campaign. Both the track and music rooms have been completed and Lincoln Christian students are enjoying the use of both. The school debt is currently at $331,000 and has continued to drop signicantly over the past ve years. It is the goal of the

School Board and Foundation Board to be debt free by end of the 2012-13 school year.

Our School Board and the Foundation Board are committed to Lincoln Christian School having no debt. It is critical that we continue to trust the

Lord to provide all the necessary resources for new capital improvements and the elimination of our remaining debt.

Giving assets instead of cash may be a wise movePerhaps the most overlooked opportunity for charitable giving is gifts of assets. Most people focus on doing their giving "from their checkbook", which is wonderful blessing to our school.

However, the average American has about 9% of their net worth in cash and 91% in other assets. These assets can be simple, such as home equity or life insurance or an IRA. But for other families, assets might include a family business, farmland, rental property, artwork and so on.

Considering a gift using these assets can save a donor long term capital gains tax and still benet Lincoln Christian. But in addition, gifting a piece of non-income producing land, for example, to a charitable remainder trust, can increase your retirement income in addition to providing a future gift to the school.

Farmland or other investment property may be producing a low income to the owner, and in many cases the property will be highly appreciated. Keeping the property may be unattractive due to the low income, and selling may be unattractive due to the taxes that would be due upon sale. With careful planning, farmland and other investment property can be gifted outright to charity, or transferred to a

life income plan that may increase nancial benets and produce charitable benets.

To help people work through some of this planning, Lincoln Christian School Foundation is excited to introduce a new partnership with Fulcrum Stewardship Systems. Fulcrum has a planned giving tool called the My Legacy Planner that is free, easy to use, and completely condential. In a time where 70% of Americans do not have a current will, we feel this is a valuable tool to oer our friends and ministry supporters.

Family Education Grant dinner raises $320,000

On Thursday, May 3, nearly 200 Lincoln Christian donors and support-ers came together for the 3rd Annual Family Education Grant Fundraising Dinner. Over $320,000 in pledges and

support were received to provide need-based scholarships for Christian families and students who are not able to aord a Christian Education.
