Around the World in a Day 2014 One World, One Team

From 22nd to 28th June, HCF’s annual fundraiser Around the World in a Day took place once again. 114 hotels in 20 countries, across all brands of the Hilton Worldwide portfolio, took part in events over the course of this exciting week. Thanks to the kilometres collected by our intrepid volunteers, they have taken us 59,939kms – or 1.49 times around the world! If we start from the Greenwich meridian, that takes us all the way around the world and then halfway round again, to just off the coast of Christchurch, New Zealand. The event theme of ‘One World One Team’ was very much taken to heart as team members and community members joined forces to raise funds and collect kilometres. Throughout the week, news flooded in of hotels and local charity partners from all over Europe working together to create brighter futures for young people in thier communities.

From Aberdeen to Ankara, from Dubai to Copenhagen, in multiple languages, in weather ranging from drizzle and mist to blue skies and sunshine, Hilton Worldwide team members united to demonstrate their commitment to their communities. HCF were thrilled to be a part of this amazing team, and we hope this special issue will succeed in conveying a flavour of the inspirational events created by team members to benefit local young people. In this issue you will read about Dance-a-thons, Fun Runs, cycle rides and triathlons, car washes, bake sales, and hula-hoops; mountain-climbing and pie-throwing; as well as candle-light swims and colourful fancy-dress You will also read about some of HCF’s charity partners who will benefit from Around the World in a Day, and who carry out such inspiring work with the young people in their local areas. We hope you enjoy reading this edition as much as we have enjoyed putting it together, and we would like to offer a huge thank you to everyone who has contributed to the success of this year’s campaign. We would also like to thank our generous sponsors and suppliers, in particular the Hilton Hotels & Resorts brand team.

Thank you for your support!

Originally an idea that came out of our Champions Workshop, AWD has grown bigger and better with every year, with more hotels and more countries stepping up to the challenge of collecting kilometres to benefit young people in communities across Europe.

Since the event was first held in 2008, it has raised £621,434 in total, benefitting 132,271 young people in 20 countries across Europe. Past beneficiaries have included Special Olympics Deutschland, Irish Autism Action, Artists for Kids GmBH, Les P’tits Craks, Stichting Heppie, and Tereza Maxova Foundation, and Association REVES. Our Champions work hard to identify local causes which will benefit the most from Around the World in a Day’s fundraising, and this year has been no exception.

Simon Sheehan, Director of HCF, said, “We are proud to support such a wide array of organisations benefitting the education and well-being of young people in our local communities. The dedication of our volunteers never fails to impress as they seek out the very best causes to answer local need, and we were delighted to support them in their commitment to their communities. We would like to thank every single person who attended, participated or donated to Around the World in Day, as your time, efforts and funds will make a real and practical difference to young people.”

Around the World in a Day 2014 Awards

This year, thanks to generous sponsorship from Hilton Hotels & Resorts, HCF has been able to recognise the hard work and commitment put in by each hotel, with an award either in the form of a donation to the hotel’s charity partner or to be used to celebrate the team’s efforts.

All 152 events were fantastic and we received 62 nominations for awards. We found it a huge struggle to decide on the winners, as each event was unique and demonstrated outstanding commitment to creating brighter futures. After much discussion, we have selected the following hotels to be recognised for their outstanding events. Congratulations to the successful hotels, and thank you to all hotels who took the time to participate!

Most Innovative Event

This award celebrates the hotels who held an event which was new, unexpected, or particularly creative in how it collected kilometres and encouraged fundraising.

Hilton Basel held a Treasure Hunt in Basel. The first event of its kind in Basel, it was extremely well-orgnaised, with participants having to carry out a series of challenges and to analyse some fairly devious clues. Even the organisers had to anazlyse the answers to find the winner.

Hilton Basel

Hilton Birmingham Bromsgrove held a series of events to raise funds, including a walk up Snowdon, a Cycle to Stoke event and a bike marathon. However, HCF were particularly impressed with team member Scott who ran 7 marathons in 7 days - totalling 295.3kms.

The team at Hilton Garden Inn Krakow also held various activites for Around the World in a Day, including a treadmill in the lobby and a running and cycling competition. Their event mixed up the traditional sports with more unusual sports, including a kayak race and roller-skating race.

Best Charity Partnership

Best Charity Partnership recognises hotels who demonstrated a close working partnership with their charity partner before, during and after their event.

DoubleTree by Hilton Lisbon - Fontana Park worked with Raizes, an organisation which works to promote the inclusion of children and young people without family support and vulnerable to risk. The charity was very active in promoting the event beforehand, attended with representatives and service users who also made a film on the day, and also stepped in to provide administrative support of donations and thanking supporters after the event.

Hilton Garden Inn Glasgow City Centre worked with Kidney Research. In the run up to the event, the charity kept up regular contact and gave their free time to help prepare for AWD. They also provided AV equipment, raffle tickets, an MC for the night and an event schedule, as well as inviting representatives and service users from the charity to attend and to speak about their experiences.

Hilton Copenhagen Airport began working with charity partner Allehelgens og Sundkirkens Sognes Menighedspleje on AWD in January. They provided a team of girl scouts to cheer and to help with the logisitcs of the day, particularly looking after the tents. They also brought 40 guests and took a very proactive role in selling tickets and promoting the event.

Around the World in a Day 2014 AwardsWild Card

The Wild Card award was an opportunity for hotels to nominate themselves for what they thought most stood out from their event. This could be for anything at all for example - teamwork, a particularly well-orgniseed event, a particular team member who went above and beyond. We saw some fantastic reasons in this section, and in the end we decided to award £50 to each of the following hotels.

In addition to the Blue Energy Committee, team members from Hilton Ankara SA volunteered before and after their shifts to ensure the event’s success. The event had 540 participants and was covered by three national newpapers in Turkey, leading to increased awareness both of the hotel and of of their charity partner CACOY.

Hilton Ankara SA Hilton Croydon

After some last minute cancellations, team memebers at Hilton Croydon stepped up to fill the gaps to ensure that all the planned competitions could take place as intended. Demonstrating outstanding commitment to the charity, 2 team members, Rares and Zoltan, also completed an 8-hour runnng challenge before going on to complete a full night shift.

A very small hotel, Hilton Innsbruck participated in AWD for the first time in 2014 and drew in team members from all departments, with full support from their HODs and GM Torsten Weller. Event organiser Sabrina Zweifler also invested 60 hours of her own full time in planning and organising this fun and unique event.

Hilton Innsbruck Hilton Leeds City

In addition to organising the North Region Cksuter Bike Ride, Hilton Leeds City also held an 8 hour cycliing competition. Due to a traffic accident, the roads around the hotel were closed and team members found it hard to reach the hotel in time for their shift. 4 team members kept cycling for hours to ensure that the competition could still go ahead until their colleagues were able to arrive and take over.

Wild Card: Continued

Team members at Hilton St George’s Park were so enthusiastic about their dance-a-thon that they ended up with blisters! In addition, team members who weren’t able to attend the event itself gave up their breaks and arrived early or stayed late to participate and support their colleagues.

Hilton St George’s Park

Hilton Stockholm Slussen

Hilton Stockholm Slussen spent three months planning their event, including extensive liaison with the local council over use of public space. The team also sourced extensive sponsorship from local suppliers, leading to a massive boost to their fundraising.

Hilton London Kensington completely re-vamped their Around the Around the World in a Day, and instituted a fantastic promotion scheme among team members, where everyone who participated or donated took a selfie in a blue wig. As well as generating fantastic pictures, this also led to an increase in participants and donations!
