With winter well and truly settled in and showing no signs of leaving, how often does one sit by the fire and dream of a beautiful Invercargill summer? I do it often. I can’t wait for summer, the long lazy nights when it doesn’t get dark until well into the evening, those times when working late doesn’t interfere with soaking up some rays and seeing day light.

I fondly recall summer just gone, when on the spur of the moment we’d all pile into the car after dinner and head towards Oreti Beach to see the stars come out in true Kiwi style. Oh yes, the days of summer will soon be upon us – perhaps making us wonder what all the fuss was about with the ice and winter flurries that have blanketed Invercargill in bright pretty white ‘stuff’ in recent weeks.

I do enjoy the beauty of winter and simply adore the snow – it brings out the child in me, there is nothing quite like being the first to leave footprints in freshly fallen snow or to see the surprise on the kids’ faces when they open the curtains to see the white world.
