CONGRATULATIONS!

Welcome to the Achieving Success through Collaboration, ENgagement, and

Determination (ASCEND) Pre-College Institute (PCI).

Out of more than 2100 prospective ASCEND students, you have been selected to

participate in this summer’s PCI. As a new student of the University, you will be a

part of the inaugural class of ASCEND scholars and we could not be more excited

to welcome you into this vibrant learning community. PCI is a six-week, rigorous

summer academic program that will provide you with the necessary tools to help

enrich your educational journey. As an ASCEND scholar, you will gain valuable

academic and social skills, while building a supportive community of faculty, staff

and peers, both in and out of the classroom.

This summer, you will have the opportunity to participate in an array of courses,

workshops, and programs, including coursework, structured study, campus

orientation and social activities, that are designed to prepare and guide you

throughout your academic career at Rowan University.

In addition, you will have an advanced opportunity to live on campus and to also

learn about student organizations and clubs, resources, and activities available at

Rowan. By the fall semester, you will have a head start on life as a Rowan University

student — both academically and socially. At the conclusion of the PCI, your

academic and residential performance will be evaluated by the ASCEND staff, to

determine matriculation into the fall semester as a Rowan University student.

All ASCEND students who transition into the fall semester will have access to a

support system that is specifically tailored to meet your needs through a framework

that includes intensive counseling, success coaching, mentoring, tutoring and

developmental workshops. The incredibly talented ASCEND staff will be your guides

and allies on your journey; their support is critical to the formula for student success

and graduation.

As you set out on this academic journey that will help to shape the thinkers,

professionals, citizens and difference-makers you are destined to be, I encourage

you to go forth in a spirit of exploration. This is your chance to take advantage of

the impressive collection of academic and social opportunities provided by the

ASCEND program and Rowan University. Push yourself beyond what’s familiar. It

should be scary, and thrilling: that’s what education is. We are looking forward to a

productive summer and successful academic year. See you on June 24!

Sincerely,

Dawn S. Singleton, Ed.D.

Director, ASCEND

CLASSES AND HOUSING

SUMMER CLASSES

The PCI academic coordinator evaluates each

student’s SAT scores and Accuplacer basic skill

placement test scores to determine registration

in the appropriate summer courses. During the

summer, PCI students may be placed in a general

education, college level course taught by Rowan

University faculty, and/or one writing, reading,

or math skills seminars based on their academic

8

needs. All courses and seminars are designed to

prepare students for the academic year.

SUMMER HOUSING

During PCI, students and staff reside in the

Whitney Center Apartments. The apartments

are designed with four separate bedrooms, two

bathrooms, a common area living room and a

kitchen with a refrigerator and sink. Students are

not permitted to cook in their rooms and are not

permitted to bring microwaves; however access

to a microwave will be available. Roommates are

randomly assigned.

FALL CLASSES

Upon arriving at the PCI, each student receives a

computer generated fall schedule. Prior to the end

of the summer program, students will meet with

the University Advising Center to make schedule

adjustments to their Fall schedule.

FALL HOUSING

During the summer program, the Office of

Residential Learning and University Housing

will meet with students to discuss the housing

procedures and policies. Students interested

in staying on campus in the fall and spring

semesters will be able to register for on campus

housing at rowan.edu/selfservice, under My

Housing. Housing applications should be

submitted as early as possible.

Careful consideration of the financial obligation

should be given when deciding to stay on campus.

Students choosing to live on campus are required

to commit to a one-year contract. If students

cancel their contract after the deadline, they will

be charged a cancellation fee up to $500.

The most common housing configuration for first

year students is a double room. If a student would

like to reside in a triple occupancy room, they

should indicate so in their housing application.

Triples will only be offered in Holly Pointe

Commons.

It is the policy of Rowan University that all

unmarried undergraduate full-time students,

under the age of 21, who will not be living in

the residence of their parents or legal guardian,

must reside in university housing facilities until

completion of their second academic year (or

four full-time semesters). Students who wish to

commute from the residence of their parents

or legal guardians must live within a 40-mile

radius of the institution and submit a notarized

document confirming this by completing the

Statement of Student Residence form, which is

available on the housing website.

CAMPUS RESOURCES

ACADEMIC SUCCESS CENTER AND DISABILITY RESOURCES

The Academic Success Center provides services

to students with disabilities and veteran students.

Students requesting housing and or classroom

accommodations based on their disability would

be required to register for services.

For more information, contact: John Woodruff,

Director, Academic Success Center and Disability

Resources by calling 856-256-4234, or emailing

[email protected]. For more information, visit

rowan.edu/studentaffairs/asc.

COUNSELING AND PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES

The Counseling and Psychological Services

Center provides counseling, psychological and

psychiatric services for Rowan students. Services

are strictly confidential. The Center provides

individual, group and couples’ counseling for a

variety of issues encountered by the student

population. These may include transition to

college, academic stressors, depression, anxiety,

relationship and family concerns, eating disorders,

sexual assault, identity issues and alcohol and

substance abuse. Support groups are organized

each semester according to interest, campus

need, and group member availability. A mental

health clinician who specifically serves ASCEND

students is located in the ASCEND Office. A

psychiatrist is also available through the Center’s

counselors for referrals, medication evaluation and

prescriptions.

For more information, call 856-256-4333 or visit

rowan.edu/studentaffairs/counseling.

9

STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES

Student Health Services provides preventive care

and the treatment of acute illnesses and injuries

for Rowan students. The health service does not

take the place of a primary physician. While the

center can handle most needs, students with

more serious disorders requiring hospitalization,

laboratory, diagnostics or specialist care will be

referred accordingly.

Health Services does not cover the cost of

prescription drugs, laboratory procedures, x-rays,

or other referrals. Health Center staff will provide

medical care for illness and injury for enrolled PCI

students during the summer program. Health

Services is responsible for the enforcement of any

state or university health requirements. Students

requiring care for major illness or emergency

needs may be transported to the nearest hospital.

It is important that students keep health insurance

information with them at all times.

For more information, visit rowan.edu/health or

call 856-256-4333.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q. Why can’t the students have cell phones?

A. Cell phones have been found to be a distraction

from social growth and engagement; preventing

students from learning and getting to know

others, and are disruptive to class instructors.

Surveys of our 2014 and 2015 PCI students

revealed that:

• 90 percent of former PCI students strongly

agreed or agreed that not having a cell phone

made them more willing to make new friends in

the PCI program.

• 88 percent of former PCI students strongly

agreed or agreed that not having a cell phone

during the PCI program helped them remain

focused in the program and in classes.

Cell phones that are brought to the program

are collected on Sundays and returned to the

students prior to check out on Thursdays.

Q. How can I contact my child?

A. Each apartment has a phone and an extension.

You will receive the phone number during

arrival day.

Q. Can my child have visitors?

A. No, there is no visitation.

Q. When can my child come home?

A. All but one weekend throughout the program

(see weekend schedule on the last page).

Q. Can my child have a car on campus?

A. Yes; however, they must turn in their car keys

upon returning to campus each Sunday. Car

keys are returned to students prior to check-

out each week.

Q. How can my child receive packages?

A. Hand-delivered to the main office in Whitney

Center, or by U.S. mail to:

Student’s Name

Rowan University

ASCEND Office, 3rd fl. Savitz Hall

201 Mullica Hill Rd.

Glassboro, NJ 08028

Q. Can I drop off a package at Whitney?

A. Yes. Packages can be dropped off any time at

front desk of the Whitney Center. Students are

notified that a package is waiting for them to

pick up. Please clearly label each item to ensure

packages are given to the appropriate student.

Q. Why hasn’t my child called home?

A. Students are having fun, meeting new friends,

and following a very rigorous schedule. They

are free to make calls when they are in their

rooms or after their scheduled day ends.

Q. When should doctor appointments be scheduled?

A. Appointments should be made on Fridays or

after the PCI program ends on Aug. 5, unless it

is an emergency.

Q. I scheduled a vacation during the summer program, can my child be excused?

A. No. The entire six-week summer program

is mandatory. Only approved extenuating

10

circumstances are excused, such as a medical

emergency.

Q. Can my child bring a laptop?

A. Yes. We encourage students to bring laptops

or tablets due to limited computer lab

availability, but they cannot use them in the

classroom, unless approved by their professor.

Q. How can I get a copy of my student’s grades?

A. The quickest, easiest way for parents to

receive information about the student’s

grades, financial statement, or other student

information is for the student to provide it.

Students can look up information online, print it

off, and give or e-mail a copy to their parents.

Q. If I’m paying for my child’s education, why can’t I get a copy of my students’ records?

A. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy

Act, FERPA, requires that access to a college

student’s records must be granted by approval

of the student. Parents can, however, receive

information about their student’s records if

the student agrees to provide access. This

documentation should be submitted to the

Office of Registrar for transcripts, and to the

Office of the Dean of Students for any other

education record. The FERPA waiver can be

found at: rowan.edu/provost/registrar/forms/

FERPA%20Waiver.pdf

Q. Does ASCEND cover students’ expenses during the academic year, as is done in the summer?

A. No, each student receives a bill from the Bursar

detailing the amount owed by the student.

Students and parents can apply for loans to

assist with covering the cost of attending

Rowan. Financial Aid Information can be found

at: rowan.edu/provost/financialaid. Once

on the Financial Aid page, click on “Contact

Us” found under Resources. Then, fill out the

personal information, list your questions in the

text box, and hit “Submit.”
